It was a moment that stands out in Michael Parkinson’s 37 years of interviewing the rich, the famous, the powerful, the talented and the bizarre. After years of pursuing her, in 2005 Madonna finally agreed to appear on Parkinson. She appeared at the top of the stairs in skin-tight jeans, boots and with her muscular arms on display in a sleeveless red top. Her blonde hair was blow-dried to perfection and as the Parkinson theme tune played she confidently took her seat opposite her host.
Here’s what the host had to say about the Queen of Pop…

“We were in talks with her people for about 20 years but it always came back that she’d only talk about this and she’d only talk about that and she won’t talk about that.
And we said, ‘well, it’s our show and we are never told what to say by any of our guests. And when Madonna is ready to talk to us on those terms it will be wonderful to interview her’. In 2005 we finally had a call, saying, ‘Yes, she’ll do it’. And we did a one-woman show and she was absolutely brilliant.
And there was a marvellous moment for me which defined the entire business of interviewing stars. We had a technical breakdown and these girls appeared, all her minders, with these little miners’ lights clipped to their foreheads. They had various jobs, such as looking after her hair, her make-up, her clothes, etc.
But, as I stood back, I watched one of these girls with real fascination because I couldn’t make out what she was doing. She had a long, thin stick in her hand and at the end was a cotton bud. And she was following Madonna around. And then, at one point, Madonna turned towards her, stood still and the girl put the cotton bud up Madonna’s nose to look for bogeys.
And I thought that’s the job I want when I retire to be Madonna’s bogey finder!”

Madonna shipped boxes and bales containing toys, chocolate and sweets to six orphanages in Malawi. Along with the goodies, she also included a handwritten note that read

“To my Malawi children on Christmas and Boxing Day.
I wish I was with you.
    See you soon,
    M.”
Officials at Madonna’s charity, Raising Malawi, distributed the items and other miniature Christmas cards signed by Madonna and children Lourdes, 14, and Rocco, 10.
    The notes read:

“Mercy, David, Rocco, Lourdes and I send you a blessed Christmas to all of you!”
Also in the bales were new clothing and items that Madonna, Lourdes, Rocco and Mercy have outgrown and can no longer use.
Madonna also threw an open-air party at Consol Homes, an orphanage near Lilongwe. Over 1,000 people from the surrounding villages were invited to celebrate with the 2,500 orphans and underprivileged children.
Yacinta Chapomba, director of Consol Homes explained…

“Madonna says she always enjoys the traditional dances the villagers perform for her when she visits. She asked us to invite as many villagers as possible for the Christmas party.”

New rumour apparently coming from The Herald Sun Australia (even though it’s nowhere to be found on the paper’s website)
Speaking from a Miami studio, Williams talks about his jam-packed calendar for 2011.

“I’ve just been all over the place from project to project. Right now I’m working on lil’ Neptunes music. And there’s another Despicable Me. We’ve also got some stuff going on with Madonna.”

Madonna has been crowned the most talked-about celebrity of the noughties. She has had her name mentioned in UK print media more than any other star since 2000.

Ozzy Osbourne “Lady Gaga could be the next Madonna”
The metal legend and unlikely reality star sat down with Us Weekly to talk about Gaga being the next Madonna…

“I do think Lady Gaga should take a break for a little while. She’s getting too much. And she doesn’t watch the the exposure of her clothes. She’s just too overexposed. She could be the next Madonna if she played her cards right.”
Too Hot For MTV: Ten Controversial Music Videos That Got Banned
Billboard made a chronological list of the 10 truly controversial videos deemed too hot for MTV (at least during daylight hours) — four by Madonna alone!

Duran Duran, “Girls on Film” (1981)
A series of erotic vignettes, including suggestive pole dancing, pillow fights, sumo wrestling and one very oily massage, was more than enough to get Duran Duran’s breakthrough hit banned by the BBC, and that’s before anyone factored in full-on nudity (see the six-minute uncensored version here). Shot just weeks before the launch of MTV, the band savored the controversy, which didn’t just give them exposure, but anointed them music video pioneers.
Mötley Crüe, “Girls, Girls, Girls” (1987)
Shot at the Seventh Veil Strip Club in Hollywood, Motley Crue’s raunchy tribute to bikes, babes and booze could have just as easily been titled “Boobs Boobs Boobs.” The video lap dance came as the band had reached its commercial peak, and while it was banned by MTV – for nudity, ‘natch – it did little to thwart album sales, which eventually topped four million.
    Madonna, “Like a Prayer” (1989)
Now regarded as groundbreaking, when “Like a Prayer” made its TV debut, the country let out a collective gasp. Using Catholic iconography to tell the story of a black man wrongly accused of murdering a child, Madonna bears witness to the injustice in the video, and is later shown kissing the Saint on the mouth. Critics of the clip insisted Madonna was locking lips with a black Jesus, and the ensuing controversy cost her a national Pepsi promotion — the commercial only aired once – but won her the MTV Viewer’s Choice Award that year.
    Madonna, “Justify My Love” (1990)
Never one to shy away from controversy, Madonna took MTV’s banning of her 1990 video for “Justify My Love” all the way to the bank, releasing it as the first-ever VHS video single (packaged in a plain black slip, to resemble other seedy videos). Racy even by Madonna’s standards, the video put sadomasochism, bisexuality and androgyny on full display, along with a host of explicit bedroom acts. The song did make its way onto broadcast, however, when ABC’s Nightline aired it along with a Madonna interview. Weeks later, it topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Garth Brooks, “The Thunder Rolls” (1991)
The country superstar used the music video for his 1991 hit “The Thunder Rolls” as a way to raise awareness to the growing problem of domestic violence. Deemed too graphic for CMT viewers, the network pulled it one day after its premiere, stating that the company was “in business to entertain, not to promote or condone gratuitous violence or social issues.” The controversy centered around one scene in which a husband comes home and beats his wife to a pulp while their daughter looks on, which is about as gratuitous as a hole in the head.
    Madonna, “Erotica” (1992)
MTV aired Madonna’s post-”Justify My Love” video “Erotica” a total of three times, after which it pulled the sexually charged clip. Featuring cameos by Naomi Campbell, Isabella Rossellini, and Big Daddy Kane, the star is undoubtedly Madge as a masked dominatrix, in what are essentially scenes played out from her 1992 book, Sex. A more explicit version, containing full-frontal nudity, was released in Europe and Australia.
The Prodigy, Smack My ***CENSORED*** Up (1997)
With a title like “Smack My ***CENSORED*** Up,” it’s no surprise that The Prodigy’s breakthrough hit would anger feminists, but the video took shock value to the next level (see the uncensored version here). Playing out like a mini version of Trainspotting, the clip dives in for a close-up of the toilet, a sink with vomit, a seedy strip club, warts — and breasts — and all. Relegated to after-midnight viewing on MTV (preceded by a disclaimer), it didn’t hurt Prodigy’s showing at the VMAs that year — the band was nominated for four awards and won two, including Breakthrough Video.
    Enrique Iglesias, “Sad Eyes” (2000)
This rarely referenced early clip directed by David Lachapelle is as hot as the Latin heartthrob himself. Playing the part of a lonely pop star named, er, Enrique, it paints a picture of life on the road that includes picking up prostitutes, calling sex chat lines, pole climbing and lots of masturbation. The steamy video was promptly shelved, but has since been rediscovered online.
Madonna, “What It Feels Like For a Girl” (2001)
Madonna as vigilante is the theme of this 2001 clip, directed by her then husband, filmmaker Guy Ritchie. Relegated to overnight play by MTV and VH1 due to its violent content, Madonna and an elderly accomplice launch into a massive crime spree in which they blow up a gas station, kill an innocent bystander and then commit suicide, all under the influence of pills and liquor.
    M.I.A., “Born Free” (2010)
In the YouTube era, M.I.A. carries the controversy flag with her ultra-violent video for “Born Free” (directed by Romain Gavras). Making reference to bloody rebellions like the Palestinian “Intifada” and the Irish Republican Army’s decades-long campaign, the nine-minute clip also shows S.W.A.T. teams shooting a young boy in the head, raiding an elderly couple’s bedroom mid-coitus and assaulting anyone and everyone who stands in their way. Removed temporarily by YouTube (it was later reposted with an age requirement), the war of words continued in the press, where the Sri Lanka-raised Maya found herself on the defensive.

    Madonna’s charitable donations in 2009
Of the nearly $2.9 million the singer donated to different causes, in 2009, through her Ray of Light Foundation, a vast proportion went to organisations with links with the Kabbalah movement.
She gave $2.25 million to Raising Malawi, $200,000 donation to Spirituality for Kids and $10,000 to the Jewish Big Brothers and Sisters scheme, a charity, based in Los Angeles, that runs mentoring programmes for Jewish children.
Madonna given royal treatment on Virgin Atlantic flight
According to The Daily Mail, Madonna and her entourage were let off a Virgin Atlantic plane that was stuck on a snowy tarmac two hours before any of the other passengers.
The flight from New York was originally destined for London’s Heathrow Airport but instead it apparently landed at Stansted Airport due to bad weather, where the plane sat for about three hours.
According to other first-class passengers, Madonna and her associates were let off the plane first and were taken by bus to the terminal, said the story.
“As the plane was diverted to Stansted due to very difficult weather conditions, disembarkation was delayed while ground staff waited for buses to transport customers back to London Heathrow.
We apologize for any inconvenience this diversion caused, but for safety reasons this action was unavoidable.
It is common across airlines that business and first-class passengers disembark first and this is reflected in the higher cost of the ticket.” said a statement from Virgin Atlantic.
Still, no other first-class passengers were allowed off the flight for another two hours, though they were reportedly treated to a performance from the Queen of Pop herself, passengers told the Daily Mail.
Jellybean sued over $10m worth of royalties
The Spirit One Music group has sued John “Jellybean” Benitez, for keeping 10 million dollars worth of royalties for Madonna’s 1983 hit “Holiday” away from them.
According to documents filed in Manhattan Supreme Court, Benitez and Spirit were to split royalties for the song, still popular after nearly 30 years, and Benitez was in charge of distributing the royalties between the two, reports the New York Post.
But the suit claims Benitez “repeatedly and unrepentantly misstated and underreported revenues due to its joint owner, Spirit,” and “repeatedly, systematically and intentionally made delinquent and tardy payments” to Spirit.
The suit says Benitez has “concocted flimsy, bad-faith excuses for its inaccuracy.”
Spirit wants 10 million dollars allegedly unpaid royalties, said Spirit’s lawyer, Wallace Collins.
However, reps for Benitez did not comment on the report.

Laura Levine contacted us at Madonnarama with quite an interesting time limited offer.
    Here’s what she wrote…
I’m releasing one of my favorite photographs – Madonna, NYC, 1982 – as a signed limited edition archival pigment ink print. Madonna and I did an extended portrait session in my Chinatown apartment back in 1982 for Andy Warhol’s Interview magazine. This was right before her debut album and first single (Everybody) were about to be released. She arrived by herself and we spent the next several hours shooting away. She was very professional, open-minded, and a terrific collaborator.
Between now and the end of January I am pleased to offer this fine art print at a very special price to my friends and collectors.
Madonna, NYC, 1982 by Laura Levine is available in three sizes:
    8 x 10 inches – edition limited to 100 ($95. + 10 US shipping)
    11 x 14 inches – edition limited to 75 ($200. +15 US shipping)
    16 x 20 inches – edition limited to 50 ($350. +20 US shipping)
Each archival pigment ink fine art print in this limited edition is printed on Cansone Platine Fibre Rag paper and is hand-signed and titled by the photographer in ink on the front. I’ve been working with a master printer whose work is exceptional and quite honestly you’d be hard pressed to tell the difference between one of these luscious archival prints and a traditional silver gelatin print.
Please click here to place your order:
(International orders, please email us first for shipping rates.)
This introductory offer is only for a limited time. After January 31, 2011, the print will be available at its regular price, which will be $250, $350. and $500. Gelatin silver prints are also available, starting at $1200. Please allow three weeks for delivery.

DJ Tracy Young has been remixing Madonna’s songs for many years.
According to the legend, while she was remixing at a millennium party attended by Madonna, the queen of pop was so impressed with her that she utilized her talents by asking Tracy to spin at her movie premiere for “The Next Best Thing” in New York, her CD release party for “Music” in LA, and even at she and Guy Ritchie’s wedding reception in Scotland.
She recently gave an interview to Miami New Times…

Miami New Times: Who has been your favorite artist to work with?
DJ Tracy Young: It’s hard to pick a favorite. [but] I would have to say Madonna. She is someone I really admire, look up to musically and career-wise. Every choice Madonna has made is mind-blowing to me.
Miami New Times: Was DJing her wedding a highlight of your career?
DJ Tracy Young: It was symbolic in some ways. I am in a field where you hear “No” a lot, especially because of my gender. So when Madonna and I started working together, it was like, “Yeah, I did it.” And her wedding was an honor to perform at because I felt like she trusted me [with] one of the biggest days of her life. I was completely honored and, to be honest, really nervous.

    Lourdes vs. Madonna
Madonna’s daughter Lourdes wants to change the colour of her locks to blue and Madonna seems to disaprove. She wrote on her blog…

“I don’t know if any of you saw my hair yet but its mad dark right at the moment. I’m almost sick of it and now I want royal blue hair but not a streak, like my entire head. I’m sure if I get that hair color I’ll be sick of it after about two weeks
I read this blog aloud to my mother and she is sitting here staring at me with no expression on her face, as if she doesn’t approve of it! So now you all know what I have had to put up with for the past 14 years of my life . (sic).”

    Ciara: Madonna as an example
R&B singer Ciara recently mentioned Madonna in an interview to the Associated Press to justify the fact her recent albums have been major flops…

“Artists that I have loved and admired, who have had a long career, have not had every record or song or video that was always the right choice. If you can walk away from your career and are successful touring, you’ll always be straight. Artists like Madonna have been doing it for years. She may put out one single, do a tour and gross over $200 million”
Mayumi Nishimura talks about her cookbook
After working for seven years as Madonna’s macrobiotic cook, Mayumi Nishimura is back in Japan with her book, Mayumi’s Kitchen. She mentionned Madonna in an interview for Reuters…

“Thankfully Madonna just let me do what I know.”

HMV stores in the UK and Canada are selling Celebration Mugs and Celebration Fridge Magnet!

    Spotlight issue #48 is out…
Books, Malawi, Fitness, W.E. and an interview with a psychologist are featured on this issue.

    Perez Hilton has it wrong
Dumb blind blogger Perez Hilton recently pretended to have discovered a true vintage moment with a video of Madonna dancing for Patrick Hernander. Only problem is it’s not Madonna dancing in the video…

Sandra Bernhard: Madonna is a friend for life
Sandra Bernhard has said that she still considers Madonna as a friend. She told new LGBT networking site dot429…

“I didn’t sleep with Madonna. We were pulling everybody’s chains, creating a media frenzy. We were friends. We don’t speak anymore. I keep my friends my whole life, but Madonna feels differently. I’m not sure how involved she is with these young boys. She has four kids at home.”

American actor David Harbour (Quantum of Solace, Revolutionary Road…) talks Madonna to Broadway.com

What other films do you have on the horizon?
David Harbour: I’ve actually got four movies coming out this year. Crazy! One, called The Convincer, is going to Sundance, Isolation is touring festivals in Europe, and then I have this Madonna movie.
    Pardon? Madonna?
David Harbour: Yep, I did a movie called W.E., the story of Wallis Simpson and Prince Edward, written and directed by Madonna. It’s a great script and story, but to be honest I mostly wanted to hang out with Madonna for a couple of months. She made me a man when I was 12 years old. I remember the exact video, “Open Your Heart.” The best part is I got to dance with Madonna to Madonna music, which was the most surreal thing ever. It’s like watching Dog Day Afternoon with Al Pacino. That’s next on my list.

Jean-Paul Gaultier gave an interview to UK newspaper Telegraph.
Unexpectedly, he compares Madonna and Lady Gaga…

Telegraph: Did you realise how important the corsets you designed for Madonna’s 1990 world tour would be at the time?
Jean-Paul Gaultier: No. I was a fan of Madonna’s so I was pleased to collaborate with her for that reason – not because it would be good for my career.
Telegraph: What do you think about Lady Gaga?
Jean-Paul Gaultier: I think she’s talented and very inpolitically incorrect, which I love. But I also think that she read up on Madonna’s life and learnt it like the Bible.

Queen of pop and health guru Madonna will open a gym early next year near Red Square for Moscow's designer-clad elite, who spend exorbitant sums on a fitness frenzy that has gripped the capital.
The state-of-the-art gym, to open in mid-March, will be the second of Madonna's 'Hard Candy Fitness' gyms. The 52-year-old launched the brand in Mexico City last month.
'I know that we will create the ideal workout environment in Moscow,' the American singer said in a statement.
The spacious 35,000 square feet (3,250 square meter) gym is a partnership between Madonna, the U.S.-based private equity firm New Evolution Ventures (NeV) and Irina Razumova, founder of Russian luxury gym chain Planet Fitness.
Western-style gyms have mushroomed across Russia in recent years, with Moscow memberships costing as much as $25,000 a year. Demand for designer gym clothes has soared.
Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, a judo black belt, has said fitness is vital for his nation, where male life expectancy is just 59.
NeV is eyeing 10 more Hard Candy gyms in Brazil, Argentina, Europe and Asia, the statement said.

Madonna’s debut clothing line, which was formerly only sold in the U.S., will now be available internationally. The pop music icon’s range of juniors apparel, footwear and accessories will launch for the spring 2011 season through various Hudson Bay Company (HBC) retail locations throughout Canada, according to a press release circulated to the media on December 13.
HBC, one of Canada’s leading fashion retailers, announced that it has entered into a multi-year license agreement to manufacture and distribute “Material Girl” clothing and accessories in Canada through its 91 stores. This is the first license outside of the U.S. for “Material Girl” and marks the beginning of an international expansion strategy for the brand.
Madonna’s “fast fashion” junior collection was launched exclusively at the U.S. department store Macy’s this past August. Once again, Piers Morgan has reportedly declared that Madonna is banned from his CNN new television show.
Since the former tabloïd editor / British ‘America’s Got Talent’ judge has been confirmed as the replacement for Larry King’s US talk show, he’s being a total attention whore, never missing an occasion to mention Madonna…
According to Britain’s the Daily Express, he said:

    “She is so boring.
She is too vegan for TV.
We have Lady Gaga now so Madonna is banned from my show.”
Well, it now seems Madonna isn’t exactly sweating Morgan’s trash talk, as her publicist Liz Rosenberg told PopEater…

“Madonna doesn’t know who Piers Morgan is, but she’s a big fan of Lady Gaga.”

Dessy Di Lauro and Ric’key Pageot are a musical couple who have travelled the world with Cirque du Soleil. They recently gave an interview to The Montreal Gazette in which Pageot who toured with Madonna during her Sticky & Sweet Tour, explains how he met Madonna’s musical director, Kevin Antunes and what it was like to work with the Queen of Pop…

    Ric’key Pageot
“At the time, Kevin Antunes was the musical director for Justin Timberlake.
I said, ‘Hey, I just moved to L.A. I’m available if ever you need me.’ Four months later, I got a call for Madonna.
Before hiring me, he did a lot of research about me, into my personality, my work ethic, my specialties. He’s been in the business 15 or 20 years, with New Kids On the Block, Britney.
(Touring with Madonna was) phenomenal. She wants us to live her life, meet cool people and hang out in really cool places.
Dessy got to come out a couple of times.”
    Dessy Di Lauro
“People are aware that the Cirque work ethic is crazy. They’re very strict, you work long hours and they go for perfection. That’s what (Madonna) does.”
(Touring with Madonna) was surreal. It’s a huge production. It was crazy, being in Brazil and seeing 120,000 people packed into a stadium.”
    Ric’key Pageot
    “You get used to it.”
