    Madonna (1958-Present) By MICHELLE CASTILLO
Every pop star of the last two to three decades has Madonna to thank in some part for his or her success. The triple threat who does it all — chart-topping singer, energetic dancer and all-around provocateur — left her home state of Michigan with $35 in her pocket and a dream to make it in New York City, and far exceeded that goal with hit singles like “Vogue,” “Like a Virgin” and “Ray of Light.” The one-named wonder’s memorable music videos and live performances, which almost always include extravagant dance numbers, over-the-top outfits and eyebrow-raising concepts, made her one of MTV’s most popular artists. After causing no shortage of controversy with her unabashed sexuality and outspokenness, Madonna has since turned some of her efforts toward being a mother and humanitarian — but not before cementing her place in pop culture as the best-selling female rock artist of the 20th century.

    Jean Paul Gaultier on Madonna
Jean Paul Gaultier recently confessed to the Montreal Gazette, the idea behind Madonna’s costumes during the 1990 Blond Ambition…
“I always wanted to show the feminine part of men, the masculine side of women.”
Gaultier regaled the crowd with tales of how his teddy bear Nana was the prototype for his cone bras, worn not only by Madonna, but by photographer Cindy Sherman and various models.
Nana, which he professes to still have, has little patches high on its chest. “It’s a monster,” Gaultier likes to say.
It was a marvellous collaboration, he said of his work with Madonna: he also dressed her for her Confessions and Drowned World tours.
She would tell him, “You are the only one who never broke my heart,” Gaultier recalled.

Patti Stanger: I Need to Get Dating Advice from Madonna!
The star of Bravo’s The Millionaire Matchmaker (which airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m.)mentionned Madonna in an interview for ivillage…

It’s really weird (to date again) when you’re old, because you know too much. It’s kind of scary. I mean,  Madonna’s older than me, I don’t know what the hell she’s going through but I need to take notes from her. Because it’s amazing how much you see. It’s like, “I would have never wasted my time with him in my twenties, forget him!” You’re already discarding and disqualifying because you know exactly what you want. And you’re not going to waste any more time on it.

Madonna’s new film ‘W.E’ is currently in post-production. Mark Romanek, the director who made some of Madonna’s videos including ‘Rain’, speaks to Absolute Radio about what he’s heard about the project and what Madonna is like as a person.
Here’s what he had to say…

“A lot of the crew on my film, on this film, worked on Madonna’s new film and I hear it’s going to be actually really superb. People are going to be surprised by it. But I have not spoken to her.
I think you have to kinda have a firm hand when you’re making a film or it goes… it can go a bit pear-shaped, but she’s a tough lady.”

“Dancing with the Stars” judge Carrie Ann Inaba says she shared multiple kisses with Madonna…
She recently revealed to Access Hollywood, details from her time as a dancer on Madonna’s 1993 Girlie Show World Tour – a job for which she had to sacrifice her long locks.

“On that tour, when we all auditioned [Madonna] said, ‘If you take this job you all have to shave your head.’
I was cool with that because, you know, I’m Asian and there are so many stereotypes that we have a to be a doctor or graphic designer or lawyer or something like that.
I was like, ‘I’m going for it! I’m going to be the bald bold girl!’
Madonna is amazing. She works so hard and she pushes your buttons.
And, you know, we made out on the stage.
Well, there was like an orgy thing on stage and we were doing this and that and it felt so good and one night my boyfriend was in the audience and her friend at the time was in the audience…
I’m not saying whether it was a boy or girl, and they were in the audience.
And she was, I think, trying to tempt them and trying to make them jealous, so she turned around and I just saw this tongue coming at me and we had this full on make out session on stage.”
[My boyfriend] was mad because he was a Virgo. And he was like, ‘That is wrong!’
So, I approached her about it and I said, ‘You know, that wasn’t cool,’ and she said, ‘It’s acting.’
I said, ‘If it was acting then we would have done it everyday in rehearsal,’ and I said, ‘If you want to kiss me you have to come to my room and knock on my door and ask me,’
We did play truth or dare the last night of the tour… I had another kiss. We had the second kiss,”

Madonna made an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show via satellite to speak out against suicide and bullying.
Troubled gay students have hit headlines across the U.S. in recent weeks after several allegedly took their own lives following cruel taunts from their peers. And Madonna admits she is heartbroken by the tragic deaths – because it was her gay friends who ultimately made her feel accepted.
Here’s what she had to say:

Ellen Degeneres: I appreciate that you wanted to speak to this cause here because it is a very important cause to me and I understand for you. So speak to us.
Madonna: Well, I just feel it would be incredible remiss of me to not say something. I’m incredibly disturbed and saddened by the overwhelming number of teen suicides that have been reported lately because of bullying. Suicide in general is disturbing. Teenagers committing suicide is extremely disturbing but to hear that teenagers are taking their lives because they are being bullied in schools and dormitories, what have you, is kind of unfathomable. I know a number of people have spoken out about it but I feel like I need to say something. The gay community has been incredibly supportive of me. I wouldn’t have a career if it weren’t for the gay community…I have a teenage daughter and I have ongoing discussions with her about this topic so I feel like I need to say a few words…
Ellen Degeneres: Were you bullied as a kid? Did you feel different than other people when you were younger?
Madonna: Yes, that’s an understatement. I still feel different. I can totally relate to the idea of feeling isolated and alienated. I was incredibly lonely as a child, as a teenager. I have to say I never felt like I fit in in school. I wasn’t a jock. I wasn’t an intellectual. There was no group that I felt a part of. I just felt like a weirdo…It wasn’t until my ballet teacher who was also gay took me under his wing and introduced me to a community of artists of other unique individuals who told me it was good and okay to be different and brought me to my first gay disco and ironically made me feel I was part of the world and it was okay to be different.
Ellen Degeneres: What do you say to your children, Madonna? You said you started having these conversations when you talk about bullying. What do you say?
Madonna:..We talk a lot about the importance of not judging people who are different. Not judging people who don’t fit into our expected view of what’s cool and what isn’t. Think about it across the board. The concept that we are torturing teenagers because they are gay. It’s kind of like I said earlier. It’s unfathomable. It’s like lynching black people or Hitler exterminating Jews. Sorry if I’m going on a rampage right now but this is America. The land of the free and the home of the brave….
Madonna: I think it would be interesting for everybody to try one simple experiment. If you want to talk about solutions or how can we solve this problem? Try to get through the day each and everyone of us…without gossiping about somebody. Without gossiping about anybody. And not only that. Not even listening to gossip. Walking away from it. Can you imagine what your day would be like? How much more free time you’d have? I also feel like you’d feel about better about yourself…
Ellen Degeneres: I think it’s a good challenge. Just thinking that there is somebody on the other end of that….Madonna, I think you’re an amazing woman and before I let you go, when are we going to hear another album? We’re waiting for another album.
Madonna: Ellen, never let me go.
Ellen Degeneres: I know you are finishing up a film right now…
Madonna: I’m editing it (her film) and as soon as I’m done. I’ve got to get my butt in the studio and make some more music.
    Ellen Degeneres: We can’t wait.

    November 9th, 2010 Frienemies?
Back in the day, Sandra Bernhard and Madonna were BFFs.
Twenty years later, their friendship has dissolved.
Bernhard went on The Wendy Williams Show and talked about the fall-out. We feel she kinda misses that AbFab friendship even though she uses cynism to cover it up.
    Read this…

Wendy Williams: Let’s talk about your old friendship with Madonna. Is that still an active friendship?
Sandra Bernhard: (singing) “Old Madonna had a farm, E-I-E-I-O…” No.
Wendy Williams: Are you still cool with that now?
Sandra Bernhard: I’m cool with her, but we’re not friends anymore. It’s a bummer… In the day we were like super super super…
Wendy Williams: You were Patsy and Edina.
Sandra Bernhard: Yeah, we really were. She came to my show in 1988, came backstage and then we started hanging out. I guess to a certain degree anytime two performers connect, there’s a little bit of publicity. That’s legitimate. In those days, before the internet, before TMZ.
Wendy Williams: Before The Kids. So you were able to be wild and crazy.
Sandra Bernhard: We would go out, have a genuinely great time and I think we were a really good example of two women being friends. To me that was the saddest part of our friendship dissolving. I would have liked that to have gone on for a while. Certain people can’t handle those kind of friendships. That’s not my style. I like to maintain my friendships throughout my life.
Wendy Williams: Am I the only one who smells something bitter going on that I’m not going to ask any more about?
Sandra Bernhard: No no, it’s not bitter.
Wendy Williams: Did she mess it up for you guys?
Sandra Bernhard: It’s ok, you know. All is forgiven. You know, once you gone to kabbalah…

Dolce & Gabbana admitted one of the most memorable moments in their 20-year career is when Madonna donned one of their creations.
    Domenico Dolce said…

“A memorable moment for me was when we met Madonna in New York.
We had always looked at Madonna as fans.
We would say, ‘Ah, can you imagine if one day Madonna dressed in Dolce&Gabbana?’
18 months later the dream came true.”
The designers also revealed that they believe Linda Evangelista is the best model in the industry because she is both “masculine and feminine”

Montreal-born photographer Marcus Leatherdale has been exhibiting for more than 20 years in galleries worldwide. His work has been published in such magazines as The New Yorker, Vanity Fair or Details.
He photographed Madonna in the very early stage of her career and talked about it in Lid Magazine…

“Madonna was the roommate of Martin Borgoyne and had come along with Martin to my studio because Martin, a good friend of mine, wanted to be photographed with her.
No one knew anything about her. Martin played the cassette of her music “Borderline” and “Holiday,” which I heard for the first time and loved it.
I dressed her up in my jean vest and sat her crosslegged on an office stool like a lilypad.
    It was purely visual…
Neither one of us in 1983 were prone to Eastern Mystism. Shades of things to come… for both of us.”

Photgrapher Deborah Feingold gave a mini-interview to MFD Magazine talking about her lollipop photoshoot with the Madonna.
Here’s some excerpts of the interview…

MFD: You have managed to create some very iconic portraits of a favorite lady of ours, Madonna. What is your most treasured portrait shot of her?
Deborah Feingold: I must have shot no more than 36 images of her that day in about 20 minutes. They are one shot in my mind. They were very similar in tone and when I see them I see both of us at our beginning.
MFD: What was Madonna like to work with? Any charming or idiosyncratic habits she possessed?
Deborah Feingold: She was quiet almost shy. We barely spoke but I can see that I did manage to ask her to make little changes through out the shoot and I supplied the lollipop and gum!
Check out a few HQ pictures from that session…

A few days ago, photographer Mary McCartney released a book titled “From Where I Stand.”
The book reveals her best work from the 1990’s to date.
Her photographs are decadent, often voyeuristic peep-ins, sprinkled with backstage and onstage depictions at fashion shows, rock concerts, the theatre, and the ballet; all stylistically represented in a visual narrative.
McCartney’s archive represents her friends, her family and her idols including Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow paying tribute to Madonna…

Madonna’s latest interview for US Weekly
The October 25 issue of Us Weekly featured a small interview with Madonna…

    Rosie: Madonna’s my sister
Rosie O’Donnell recently gave an interview to Broadway World magazine and if you wondered if she was still close to Madonna, here’s your answer…
Interviewer: Have you kept in touch with Madonna? You were so close.
Rosie O’Donnell: Yeah, yeah. She’s doing well. She’s in England and directing and she’s got her kids and her life. And so do I. But, we keep in touch via e-mail and the phone and I now love her and always will. She’s like a sister. She’s a great person.
    Madonna’s Fashion Moments
Website WWD.com did an all-time Fashion Moments list…
Fashion Moment #55 is Madonna’s Ever Changing with the following comment and picture from the Buffalo Gals party in 1983…
    Moment 55: Who’s That Girl?
Into the pop culture stratosphere she came, a peroxide blonde bedecked in piles of bangles, crosses, rosaries, cheap lace crop tops, biker shorts and her favorite Boy Toy belt. In the beginning, Madonna was the poster girl for Eighties mall fashion, but not for long. Just when the impressionable masses embraced her trashy mash-up look, she was on to her next incarnation—the chastened brunette of Like A Prayer, the power babe with a platinum pixie of Express Yourself, the dominatrix of Erotica. But no reinvention was more famous than that of her 1990 Blond Ambition Tour in all of its cone-bra glory, which forever linked Madonna to French fashion provocateur Jean Paul Gaultier. Together they shocked the world with their overt innerwear-as-outerwear statement, an iconic moment they stretched until literal overexposure: In 1992, Gaultier staged a charity fashion show for AmFAR with Madonna as his muse, “who was dressed in black with her gold tooth as her only accessory,” reported WWD. “At the end of the runway she paused to peel off a jacket, revealing one of Gaultier’s harness dresses and a lot more. It was like a coming attraction: As everybody’s been reading ad nauseam, Madonna’s boobs are about to go into wide, wide release.”

Ricky Martin was on Oprah, today, and Madonna came up in the conversation…
Oprah: There was a time when – you describe in the book – Madonna comes up and she said to you “Stop doing interviews, because people already know who you are.” And you said it wasn’t until later that you really understood what she meant. What was it that you understood?
Ricky Martin: That you need to step out of the picture for a second and look at everything that’s going on. I was obsessed with work, because if I stopped working and I dare to go to that moment of silence, a lot was going to come in and I was just not ready to listen to what my body, my feelings were telling me. So she said “Dude, step out of the picture. You need a break. Everybody knows who you are. Why do you keep doing interviews.”
Oprah: I thought that was such a profound moment.

The news that Madonna will hold her first concert in Seoul next May made headlines in the Korean media over the weekend.
But some Korean entertainment insiders are doubtful about whether she will really be able to add her name to the list of pop superstars that have come to Korea in recent years – names that include Beyonce, Billy Joel and Stevie Wonder.
On Spot E Korea, which claims to be the Korean branch of the U.S.-based firm On-Spot Enterprises, said on Sunday it has “finalized talks with Madonna to proceed with her concert in Seoul in May,” but that “details related to the concert date, schedule and security policies are still under discussion.”
It added that it had formed a partnership with Korean company Again Don Quixote in early October to prepare for the event.
But industry insiders say that On Spot E Korea’s announcement – which, at six months in advance of the actual dates, is much earlier than most concerts involving major-label pop stars – is a stunt to beat out local competitors, rather than being based on fact.
Koreans fans have waited a long time for a concert by the “Queen of Pop.” She has toured neighboring countrie Japan but has yet to come to Korea.
Given the revenue such a concert would bring, concert promoters have long fought to bring her here.
One possibility, according to a source well acquainted with the situation, is that On Spot E Korea has not actually finalized a concert deal but is buying time so that rival bidders will give up.
“The new firm has few funds and not much experience,” the source said. “The only way it could sign her would be to take advantage of the time vacuum to round up investors.”
On Spot E Korea has a history of cancelling heavily publicized events. It was scheduled to hold an event called the “On Spot Hip Hop Festival” on Oct. 30, but it was cancelled less than two weeks before the festival. The company promoted the event by advertising the appearance of U.S. hip-hop stars such as T-Pain.
On Oct. 28, the company claimed that actor Kevin Bacon would show up at a press conference in Seoul the following day to announce he would be filming the movie “My Life, My Secret” in Korea. But only 30 minutes before the event was scheduled to begin, the company sent out a notice saying that it could not verify whether Bacon had gotten on a plane to Korea.
On Spot E Korea could not be reached for comment.
