Kylie Minogue: “My influences precede Madonna”
by ZaCK, www.absolumentmadonna.frPromoting her forthcoming album, Aphrodite, Kylie Minogue graces the cover of BlackBook magazine. www.absolumentmadonna.fr
She also gave an interview saying she finds being compared to Madonna “lazy”…
“It’s a bit of a lazy comparison now.
If someone were to look at it more closely, they’d see that I have a lot of influences that precede Madonna.
We have friends in common. She’ll pass me a message and I’ll pass a message back to her.
I’m sure we’ll meet one day and have a good laugh.”
The magazine also gives some examples of why the two stars could be compared…
    - Madonna has her controversial Sex book, and Minogue has Kylie, an collection of photos - some topless - and an illustration of her with a penis;
    - Madonna has Truth or Dare, a tour documentary, and Minogue has White Diamond: A Personal Portrait of Kylie Minogue;
    - Madonna has a much-younger boyfriend, Brazilian model Jesus Luz, and Minogue has 32-year-old Andres Velencoso.
The New York Post has recently asked a sensible question: Is it possible to be a female pop star and not rip off Madonna?

The muscular Material Girl won’t have far to go for a workout.
Madonna is adding a floor to her new $32 million Upper East Side triple-wide townhouse, and it will be mostly taken up by a gym, city plans show.
The addition will add 1,614 square feet to the East 81st Street mansion, bringing the total square footage to 13,847, not including the cellar. The home also has a 3,000-square-foot garden.
She is also tearing up the existing bedrooms and baths, creating a new master suite on the third floor with a boudoir flanked by a giant walk-in closet and a master bath. There will be a hair salon across the hall and a separate closet for her luggage.
There is a second master bedroom on the same floor with master closet for her boy toy du jour.
In total, 10 bedrooms are planned and 13 bathrooms. The first floor has a drawing room and what is labeled on building plans as a “security living room” with adjoining bar.
The Georgian-style mansion also includes an elevator and two-car garage in what is described as the basement level, but is actually the ground floor. Madonna is adding a wine cellar and playroom one flight below.
Building permits filed with the city so far put the cost of renovations at $1.7 million.

    Robyn: Meeting Madonna was “unreal”
by ZaCK, www.absolumentmadonna.frRobyn has revealed meeting Madonna was like “an out of body experience”.
The Swedish pop star supported Madonna on the European leg of her Sticky And Sweet Tour, in 2008. www.absolumentmadonna.fr
    She told The Guardian…
“It was like an out of body experience because I’ve been a fan of hers since I was a kid, but also because of the big machine surrounding her.
It was on a level that’s just unreal to me.”

Uffie loves Mirwais’ “work with Madonna”
by ZaCK, www.absolumentmadonna.frAnna-Catherine Harley, alias “Uffie”, is releasing her first album, Sex, Dreams and Denim Jeans, co-produced by Mirwais. www.absolumentmadonna.fr
She gave an interview to French newspaper ‘20 Minutes’ and mentioned Madonna…
20 Minutes: How was the collaboration with Mirwais?
Uffie: Incredible. I also made some other songs with him. We met at a nightclub. I was a big fan of him and his work with Madonna. It was a joy working with him. I could make some suggestions. There wasn’t an ego-clash and that’s very rare.

UK artists do a Madonna JD Set
by ZaCK, www.absolumentmadonna.frTennessee whiskey brand Jack Daniel's will be making music history and bringing a ray of light to Glasgow when artists such as Silver Columns, Malcolm Middleton, James Yuill, thecocknbullkid and Casiokids join forces for an incredible JD Set that promises to deliver an unforgettable reworking of Madonna’s finest musical moments.
The artists - all signed by London-based independent record label Moshi Moshi Records - will master their collaborations during a week of intensive studio sessions, to create new versions of tracks such as Vogue, Borderline, Like a Prayer, Into the Groove, Stay, Over and Over, Frozen, Dress you up, Open Your Heart, Holiday and La Isla Bonita.
Here are some of the comments by the label and the artists performing…
Moshi Moshi Records: Madonna was not a name we expected to see, but the more we thought about it, the more we realised how perfect she was for this. She has such a long career and diverse catalogue of songs there was something that spoke to everyone in there. Everyone had their favourite song or era and the more we talked about it, the more excited we became.
Cocknbullkid: I think it’s a really cool concept. It’s one of the first things I was asked to do for this year and I’m really excited to be a part of it. We settled on Madonna. I think there were suggestions for Prince, Bowie, Roxy Music. The guys get to unleash their feminine side with Madonna, and I get to wear a conical bra! I am really looking forward to reinterpreting some of Madonna’s most seminal pop songs with the rest of the Moshi Moshi crew. I hope we do it justice. www.absolumentmadonna.fr
James Yuill: I’m covering Power of GoodBye, I don’t know why, but I love it… I even bought it on single when it came out. Very tempted to do Open Your Heart in an underworld style. Not sure if anyone else wants to do that though… I guess when we meet we’ll have a better idea about who should play what.
Malcolm Middleton: I’m not 100% sure yet, but I’ll probably latch onto the Silver Columns doing “Into The Groove”, and possibly do “Stay” myself. I’ve covered this before, but I think there’s a lot more that can be done with this song, and it’d be good to see what the other folk can add to it.
They are playing live tonight (June 17th) at the O2 ABC venue, in Glasgow - bringing Madonna’s music to an amazingly intimate venue.

Madonna and Warner Music... What really happened?
    by ZaCK, www.absolumentmadonna.fr
It seems that we never hear any details about Madonna’s business deals, but this article sheds a bit of light.
The theme of Madonna’s life story is that she gets her way - in love, life and business. But that was until she came up against Seagram’s liquor fortune heir Edgar Bronfman Jr.
In “Fortune’s Fool: Edgar Bronfman Jr., Warner Music, and An Industry of Crisis,” which Simon & Schuster will begin shipping to bookstores at the end of this month, investigative journalist Fred Goodman writes that Bronfman outplayed Her Madgesty after the pop star attempted to pressure him into paying a king’s ransom for her stake in Maverick Records.
Madonna had founded Maverick at the height of her success in the ’90s-to which she signed such hit artists as Alanis Morissette and Prodigy-but the label had seen better days by 2003, when the Material Girl began negotiating with Time Warner, which owned 40% of Maverick, to buy out her share. Madonna wanted $60 million, “at least twice what Time Warner said it was worth,” Goodman writes. But that same week, Time Warner’s board was meeting to decide whether to sell Warner Music, so, the author adds: “Placating Madonna was going to be someone else’s headache.”
Enter Bronfman, who, in March 2004, just three weeks after he closed the deal to buy Warner Music, got a call from Madonna’s longtime attorney Allen Grubman, who told Warner Music’s new owner he had 24 hours to solve the problem or Madonna was going to sue. “Allen, this is nuts,” Bronfman said. “Give us some time.”
“No, she’s implacable,” Grubman responded. Madonna’s price tag had risen, too - from $60 million to $200 million. Bronfman was willing to pay only $15 million, however, and had the company’s lawyers file a preemptive suit against the artist.
An angry Madonna accused Warner of “treason” and filed her own lawsuit. But, in the end, the author reports, she “sold her 30% interest in Maverick to Bronfman for $17 million - only $2 million more than he had offered in the first place and a figure that almost certainly could have been reached without any public posturing.”
Three months later, Bronfman and Warner Music Group Chairman Lyor Cohen sought to mend fences with the artist by inviting her to meet with them. Bronfman greeted Madonna with a gift-wrapped box. “You’ve been incredibly important to this company for 20 years,” Bronfman told her. Inside the box was a diamond bracelet.
“The gift,” Goodman writes, “seemed to hit the right note. ‘She was like a little girl,’ “ Bronfman recalled. “‘It broke the ice.’” Perhaps, but in 2007, Madonna announced she was leaving Warner to sign with concert promoter Live Nation in a 10-year, $120-million deal.
Madonna’s spokeswoman Liz Rosenberg declined to comment on this story, telling Gatecrasher, “I was not privy to the details of any of these negotiations.”

Katy Perry: Madonna, Gaga and religious imagery
by ZaCK, www.absolumentmadonna.frLast week, Katy Perry posted a tweet about popstars using video’s religious imagery.
    She wrote… www.absolumentmadonna.fr
“Using blasphemy as entertainment is as cheap as a comedian telling a fart joke”.
In a new radio interview, Perry explained that both her parents are pastor, and clarified her comment, noting that it wasn’t solely about Gaga, but also about Madonna or anyone in pop culture who’d use religious imagery.
    She said…
“You know, when Madonna was on a cross, and sometimes my boyfriend will say things that are a little bit ‘eh’ for me, from where I come from.
It’s hard for me to say that, because sometimes I’m a very hypocritical person.
Everybody’s like, ‘How do you say that and you kissed a girl?’ And I think sometimes, most of the time, you can disagree or agree, spirituality and sexuality are two separate things, and then when you decide to put them into the same subject, it gets interesting for some people.
Everybody knows, I’ve said it maybe 100 times on my Twitter, I’m one of the biggest Lady Gaga fans and Madonna fans.
It’s just that, like, of course, some people have different viewpoints.

Robyn: “Songs like ‘Express Yourself’ were important”
by ZaCK, www.absolumentmadonna.frAbMad’s friend Scott sent us the following news about Swedish singer Robyn…
As she has recently announced plans to release three new albums in 2010, including ‘Body Talk Pt 1′ which was released on June 7, Robyn gave a question chat session for aftonbladet.se, a Swedish website. www.absolumentmadonna.fr
Scott asked a question involving Madonna…
Q: With your new song ‘Fembot’ we see perhaps more into your feminist side, has Madonna influenced you at any point in your life?
A: I think my mom influenced me more than anyone to be a feminist, but what Madonna did with songs like ‘Express Yourself’ were more important than I think she gets credit for.

    Stuart Price 2010 vs. 2005
by ZaCK, www.absolumentmadonna.frStuart Price who previously worked with Madonna on various tours and on her Confessions on a Dance Floor album, produced Kylie Minogue’s new album “Aphrodite“, gave an interview to English newspaper Times. www.absolumentmadonna.fr
Having worked with them both, he told timesonline that they are almost opposite personalities…
“Madonna has a much more aggressive and determined approach.
    Kylie is much more instinctive.”
Oddly Price had a quite different approach when Madonna released Confessions on a Dance Floor, in 2005.
    Here’s what he said then…
“The thing is is that you don’t produce Madonna, you collaborate with her.
She’s a really good producer herself and obviously a great writer too.
I’ve never worked with anyone before who is as genuine and as hands on as an artist as Madonna is.
She’s has her vision and knows how to get it but at the same time will be the first person to say ‘I can’t make records without my collaborators.’
Everyone wants Madonna to be the ultimate, cool, strong, fun girl. That’s what they want her to do and that’s why they embrace her so much when she does do it.
The problem is that she’s just way too enthusiastic and intellectual to stay doing ‘one type of music throughout the whole of her career.”

Taio Cruz : Pop music is Madonna and Michael Jackson!
by ZaCK, www.absolumentmadonna.frTaio Cruz is a 27-year-old British singer-songwriter, occasional rapper, and music producer. www.absolumentmadonna.fr
He wrote songs for Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears and Pussycat Dolls.
His discography includes UK and US number one single “Break Your Heart”.
He recently defended pop music mentioning Madonna, in the process…
“I think ‘pop’ became a dirty word. I’m not going to name any names, but then some people ripped all the soul out of it.
People like Madonna, people like Michael Jackson - that’s pop music, but it had soul, it had real musicianship to it.
For me, as a kid, all of my influences were pretty much American, whether it was Michael Jackson or Madonna - most of the big stars generally come from here.
My music has always been geared that way.”

Lady Gaga's controversial new video, "Alejandro," is controversial only if you’ve never seen ... a Madonna video! (From the Big M's greatest era) S&M ... homoeroticism ... startling religious imagery, etc. Gaga's latest effort calls to mind at least five of Madonna videos, including the black-and-white masterpiece, Vogue. I guess this is Gaga's homage to Madonna. Just as Madonna's Material Girl was an homage to Marilyn Monroe?

As for Madonna herself, she says she is "working harder than I have ever worked in my life," to put together the movie she will direct, W.E. Actually, that worries me. One of Madonna's most famous songs is Holiday, but the woman has rarely taken one in 25 years. If she’s working harder than ever now, she is going to have to be hospitalized by the time the movie is finished! (source: WoWoWow)

Gwyneth Paltrow has reportedly not ended her close friendship with Madonna.
The Iron Man 2 star's representative has dismissed a report claiming that Paltrow and Madonna have cut ties following a major row.
A source recently told Us Weekly that their friendship has been deteriorating since the popstar split from Guy Ritchie in 2008 and they now have no contact at all.
However, Paltrow's rep told Gossip Cop that the rumour is false.
'[it's] not true. [They are] still friends,' said the spokesperson.
A rep for Madonna also dismissed the report as 'BS'.

MTV.com writer Kyle Anderson has highlighted the Madonna references featured in the Steven Klein directed video for Lady Gaga's Alejandro:
When the brief preview for Lady Gaga's 'Alejandro' video appeared during the singer's appearance on 'Larry King Live' last week, many people immediately noticed the nod to Madonna's 'Vogue.' It was all there: the sharp black-and-white photography, the muscular dancing, the spartan set, the iconic hairstyle.
But as it turns out, the full version of 'Alejandro' - which premiered Tuesday (June 8) - is a healthy combination of a number of different references, nods and homages to a bevy of Madonna videos. (One MTV News writer says 'Alejandro' is more than just an ode to Madonna - check out his counterpoint in the Newsroom blog.)
The 'Vogue' references are certainly there, as Gaga spends a large chunk of the video in that same spartan set in black-and-white. But the rest of the clip features Gaga in a number of different costumes - including a red nun's habit and some sort of steampunk headgear - in a handful of different scenarios (some of which involve Nazi imagery).
In addition to 'Vogue,' the opening sequence seems to recall Madonna's 'Evita' period (when she made 'Don't Cry for Me Argentina' a hit). Gaga is dressed to mourn whomever is in the casket behind her - perhaps the titular Alejandro? - and it would be easy to assume that she's attending a state funeral, which would mean Gaga flipped the gender roles in the original story of the Peróns (in reality, it was Juan who buried Eva).
Later, Gaga strips to her underwear and dominates a scantily clad dancer tied to a bed. While Madonna is no stranger to the imagery surrounding bondage and submission, that image most faithfully recalls the Material Girl's 'Human Nature,' which saw her dressed in black pleather and dancing seductively with the assistance of ropes and a riding crop.
But the biggest nod to Madonna's past certainly comes with all the religious imagery. Gaga dresses as a nun, swallows rosary beads and stands in front of a row of crosses at various points during the clip, which brings to mind Madonna's classic video for 'Like a Prayer.' In fact, there are even video clips of flames in the background of one of the dance scenes in 'Alejandro,' which could easily have been lifted wholesale from the moment in Madonna's clip when she sings among a field of flaming crosses.
There are a number of other cultural references that slip out of 'Alejandro' (Gaga clearly enjoys the work of film director Fritz Lang), but even the gun-barrel-sporting bra she wears at the end could be mistaken for that conical top Madonna made famous during the Blonde Ambition Tour.
Of course, 'Alejandro' director Steven Klein has worked as a photographer for Madonna over the past few years, so it's quite possible that these are merely the influences he has picked up while working with her. But if Gaga really is making an attempt to define herself as a next-gen Madonna who also pays homage to her elders, then there are worse paths to follow.
