Q: What is the chart position of this Madonna album/single?
A: Please check our Charts page. For Madonna's current chart activity, please check our chart news and chart runs pages.

Q: How many albums/singles has she released? What are the lyrics of her songs?
A: Please check our discography section: albums & songs.

Q: What is Madonna's record label?
A: For 25 years, Madonna released her albums under Warner Brothers Records. In 2007, she decided not to renew her contract and she signed a 360° contract worth $120 million with Live Nation for the next 10 years. The contract includes 3 studio albums and 4 tours (the first being the Sticky & Sweet Tour). Since Live Nation is not a regular record label, the distribution of her albums coudl still happen in collaboration with Warner.
With former manager Freddie DeMann she created the label Maverick (co-owned by Warner) and signed artists like Alanis Morissette and The Prodigy. In 2004, Madonna was bought out of Maverick after a Warner lawsuit, which was also a sign for the upcoming split with her label.

    Q: Who is Madonna's manager?
A: Madonna is currently managed by Guy Oseary. Past managers were Freddie DeMann (1983-1997), Caresse Henry (1991-2004) and Angela Becker (2004-2008).

Q: How and when did Madonna's musical career start?
A: Madonna arrived in New York City in the late 70s. After several small jobs (among which serving in Dunkin' Donuts and nude modelling) and playing in some bands (the Breakfast Club and Emmy & The Emmies), she landed her first single Everybody in 1982 under Sire Records.

    Q: Where does Madonna live?
A: Since her divorce is settled, Madonna lives back in New York City. She also has houses in LA and London. (Please don't ask for her address because we prefer to respect her privacy).

Q: Is Madonna married? Does she have any children?
A: In November 2008, Madonna divorced British film director Guy Ritchie, to whom she was married since December 2000. She was married once before, to actor Sean Penn, from August 1985 till January 1989.
Madonna has two biological and two adopted children: Lourdes Maria, also called Lola (born October 14, 1996; father is her former lover and fitness trainer Carlos Leon), Rocco (born August 11, 2000; father is ex-husband Guy Ritchie), David (born 2005 in Malawi; father is Yihane Banda; adopted by Madonna and Guy in 2006) and Chifundo -Mercy- James (born 2005 in Malawi; father is James Kambewa; adopted by Madonna in 2009).

Q: What are the names of Madonna's parents? Does she have any brothers or sisters?
A: Her father (of Italian origin) is Sylvio -Tony- Ciccone. Her mother (of French-Canadian origin) is Madonna Fortin. They had 3 sons (Martin, Anthony, Christopher) and 3 daughters (Madonna, Paula, Jennifer). Madonna's mother died when Madonna was 5 years old. Her father remarried with the former housekeeper Joan Gustavson, with whom he had two more children: Mario and Melanie.

Q: What is Madonna's real name?
A: Her birth name is Madonna Louise Ciccone. She added the name Veronica at 12y. Her child nickname was (Little) Nonnie. Her Kabbalah name is Esther. During her marriage to Guy Ritchie, she often called herself Mrs. Ritchie. Guy himself called her 'the Missus'. Collaborators often refer to her as 'M'. Finally, the British press calls her Madge (or Her Madgesty) but she's not too fond of that nickname.

    Q: When was Madonna born?
A: Madonna was born on August 16, 1958 in Bay City, Michigan.

Before checking our FAQ section, first check if your question can't be answered in one of the following Mad-Eyes sections: lyrics, pictures, discography, charts, films, tours, merchandise.
If you haven't found it in these sections or in this FAQ section, send your question to us.

Q: When will Madonna release a new album?
Q: When will she go on tour again?
Q: Which tours are available on DVD? Will the Re-Invention Tour and the Sticky & Sweet Tour be released?
Q: Do you have any info on Madonna's dancers?
Q: Where can I buy merchandise for Madonna?
Q: Which movies has Madonna appeared in?
Q: How many records has Madonna sold worldwide?
Q: What is the chart position of this Madonna album/single?
Q: How many albums/singles has she released? What are the lyrics of her songs?
Q: What is Madonna's record label?
    Q: Who is Madonna's manager?

Q: What are the names of Madonna's parents? Does she have any brothers or sisters?
Q: What is Madonna's real name?
    Q: When was Madonna born?
Q: When will Madonna release a new album?
A: Madonna's most recent album release was the compilation album Celebration, released in September 2009 as her final album under her contract with Warner Brothers Records. She's set to release at least 3 studio albums under Live Nation. Since Madonna usually takes about 2,5 years between studio albums, the next one is expected sometime in 2010.

Q: When will she go on tour again?
A: In 2008 and 2009, Madonna visited Europe, North America and Latin America with her Sticky & Sweet Tour. Three more Madonna tours are expected before 2017, as defined under her Live Nation contract.

Q: Which tours are available on DVD? Will the Re-Invention Tour and the Sticky & Sweet Tour be released?
A: The following tours are available on DVD:
The show in Turin, Italy of the Who's That Girl Tour is available on the DVD "Ciao Italia: Live from Italy".
The show in Sydney, Australia of the Girlie Show is available on the DVD "The Girlie Show - Live Down Under".
The show in Detroit, US of the Drowned World Tour is available on the DVD "Madonna - Drowned World Tour 2001".
The show in London, UK of the Confessions Tour is available on the DVD "Madonna - The Confessions Tour".
The show in Buenos Aires, Argentina of the Sticky & Sweet Tour will probably be released on DVD early 2010. An exact release date has not been announced yet. It is set to be a CD/DVD release under Live Nation. Since Live Nation is not a record label, the distribution will still happen in collaboration with Warner.

    What about the other tours?
The Virgin Tour was released on VHS but was never converted to DVD.
The Blond Ambition Tour was released on laser disc but was never converted to DVD. The only DVD quality tour footage can be found on the documentary Truth or Dare.
The Lisbon, Portugal show of the Re-Invention Tour was planned to be recorded by Hamish Hamilton for a DVD release. However, due to a dispute between him and Madonna, this recording never happened and he filed a lawsuit against her. This also explains why the show was never broadcast on TV. There's some footage of the Lisbon show, shot by Christian Lamb (Burning Up and Die Another Day have surfaced online), but this was mainly meant for the venue screens and is not sufficient for a DVD release.
Instead, there was the DVD release of the documentary I'm Going To Tell You A Secret, which includes tour footage by Jonas Akerlund, mostly from the show in Paris, France.
So will this show ever be released on DVD? We don't know. But due to the many fan requests, Madonna's manager Guy Oseary said in January 2009 that there are currently no plans to release the DVD, but it will come out "someday".

Q: Do you have any info on Madonna's dancers?
A: You can find the names of Madonna's tour dancers in the Tour section. That section also has many pictures that include her dancers.

Q: Where can I buy merchandise for Madonna?
A: In the Mad-Eyes shop you can find CD's, DVD's, books and posters for Madonna.

Q: Which movies has Madonna appeared in?
    A: Check her filmography here.

Q: How many records has Madonna sold worldwide?
A: The exact number is unknown but it is estimated that Madonna has sold more than 180 million albums and 80 million singles worldwide. Therefore, she is considered as the best selling female artist in the world.

...and everyone has their part. With that Shakespearean line as the centerpiece of the song's bridge, Take A Bow signals a very special period in Madonna's career. The closing track and also the second single of the Bedtime Stories album, Take A Bow received exceptional video treatment from Madonna, and the final result of that premiered on MTV exactly 15 years ago, on November 30th, 1994. Madonna flew to historic town Ronda in Spain with the direction of Michael Haussman and created a videoclip that would serve as her plea to get her dream role as Eva Peron. Executed in a 40s style, the video showed Madonna at her classiest yet, in a Galliano dress she shone as the mistreated lover of a famous bullfighter, eventually running away from him. The storyline is interspersed with scenes of bullfighting and Madonna showing her assets in bed, not entirely abandoning the explicit Erotica years. The gorgeous video would go onto winning the Best Female Video at the 1995 VMAs and yielded a follow up in the form of the You'll See video where Madonna has the higher hand and escapes from her stalker.
While the video undoubtedly gave the single the push to become a classic, the ballad also stands on its own merits with its Oriental-tingled instrumentation (which is also inspired by the Paul Robeson version of the classic poem "Trees"), Craig Armstrong's amazing string arrangement and Madonna's silky smooth vocals backed by co-writer/co-producer Babyface, one of the most famous hitmakers at the time.
But it's the song's chart performance that made it a remarkable entry in Madonna's career. All formats of the single were released days after the video premiere and both sales and airplay would slowly and steadily climb until the end of January, when Madonna gave her first and so far only live performance of the song at the American Music Awards (the only time she sang at this show). Dressed in a Chinese gown, Madonna gave a simple but effective performance backed by an orchestra and Babyface himself, which gave great exposure to the song in the US and soon after it would climb to #1, kicking the Dallas Austin produced "Creep" by TLC from the top spot and holding it for seven weeks, which would be the longest ever for a Madonna single. While the sales of Take A Bow exceeded 600,000 copies in the US which earned it a Gold certification, it failed to reach the Platinum status of her other megahits as it was airplay where the track was really shining: it was the most played song of America for nine straight weeks. The success of the single also helped the album to stop falling down the chart and it managed to stay in the Top 20 during the Christmas season, which would eventually become the only reason why Bedtime Stories outsold Erotica in the US, as after Take A Bow started its slow descent on the charts, the album went with it and subsequent single releases didn't have much effect.
Outside the US the single also became a big hit in Canada, Japan and Australia, her other main markets of the 90s. In Europe, however, Madonna got some of her worst chart positions ever when this single got lost in the Christmas shuffle, like in Belgium, or in the UK, where it was her then-lowest peaking single and is one of the six Madonna singles that failed to reach the UK Top 10. Madonna gave 2 lip-synced performances of Take A Bow at Germany's Wetten Dass and Italy's San Remo which gave better chart performances in those countries.
The success of Take A Bow allowed it to become one of the 4 songs in Madonna's discography that can be found on 4 different Madonna albums. Featuring on all the compilations released after the single itself, proves that among all of Madonna's ballad hits of the mid-90s, Take A Bow is the pinnacle.
Unfortunately Take A Bow has never been performed live on a Madonna tour and is the only one out of the 34 hits of the Celebration compilation that was not used on a tour in any form. It is speculated that Madonna intentionally refuses to perform songs on her tours that have a "goodbye" theme. Maybe Madonna is saving Take A Bow to be her last ever live performance? Time will tell...

He is one of Hollywood's most popular celebrity designers, beloved by the likes of Madonna, Britney Spears, David Beckham and Mariah Carey. Now Christian Audigier, the man behind the Ed Hardy label, is opening his first boutique in the UK, prompting the question: are we ready for his tattoo-inspired, crystal-encrusted clothes?
The popularity of the Ed Hardy range owes nothing to style magazines or fashionistas - it has become famous for its inclusion in celebrity wardrobes.
Although the designs of skulls, roses and tigers are the work of US tattoo artist Don Ed Hardy, they have been transformed into a global brand by French designer Audigier, who has covered a wall in his Los Angeles office with 70 paparazzi shots of Madonna wearing his clothes. Audigier says he is now working with the star to produce her own clothing range.
He was also meant to be working with Michael Jackson on a clothing brand at the time of the singer's death in June, and Audigier created stage outfits which were to be used in Jackson's comeback tour. The free publicity from these celebrity endorsements has proved a successful marketing plan - this month, Hubert Guez, chief executive of Ed Hardy, predicted that the brand would generate sales of $400m this year.
'I associate the brand with Madonna,' says Ellie Crompton, style editor of Heat magazine. 'It would make sense for them to collaborate on a project. He's a strong horse to back in fashion, and part of the interest comes from his personality. He's a crazy character and fashion loves a character.'
As Ed Hardy clothing has become more famous, so has Audigier. The designer, who started his career working for 80s brands such as Fiorucci and Naf Naf, is as flamboyant as the sparkling T-shirts and hooded tops that have made him rich. Britney Spears, Pamela Anderson and Michael Jackson were guests at his 50th birthday party last year.
In an interview with American GQ last month, Audigier said he was due to appear in a film with rapper 50 Cent and to record an album with Kanye West. He told GQ: 'Obama was 200% advertising. I promote myself to sell my brands. Because now I am a kind of celeb. I am in a different world than the fashion industry. I am with Mick Jagger, Michael Jackson, Madonna. I build me as a celebrity.'
But will his clothing range catch on in Britain when the store opens in west London's Westfield Centre this week? 'Stars like David Beckham and Madonna have a massive reach with the British public,' says Crompton, 'so I can see it having a far-reaching appeal to the mass market. But how long can Audigier make that last? The label's got a very strong image, but I don't see how he can diversify the brand. It might be this year's fad.'

…What’s more, he has a special knack of always being where the action is: in Moscow with the tanks and Yeltsin during the 1991 coup, strolling through downtown Manhattan on 11 September, nightclubbing in Miami with Gianni Versace before he was shot, sleeping with Béatrice Dalle when she was the most desirable woman in France, having an affair with Paula Yates when she was one half of the most famous couple in Britain. Not forgetting his most publicly defining role: gay best friend to Madonna.
Or at least he was. Until she read his book.
    “She really didn’t like it.”
Didn’t she, I say? But it’s very affectionate.
“I think it is very affectionate, and certainly with her I was very careful to only write things that were. But she felt it was an infringement of privacy.”
In fact, it is mostly very affectionate. Of their first meeting, he writes: “She had the cupid-bow lips of a silent screen star, and it was obvious that she was playing with Sean [Penn]’s cock throughout the meal. She was mesmerizing. She oozed sex and demanded a sexual response from everyone. It didn’t matter if you were gay. You were swept up all the same.”
When I read it a second time around, though, I think I spot some of the areas of potential concern. His observation that she smells “vaguely of sweat”, to take one example. Or that, like all Hollywood’s alpha females, she’s something of a “she-man”. Or just possibly it was this bit that she didn’t care much for: “Just like America, everything about Madonna had changed. And what had happened had been carefully wrapped in psychological clingfilm and locked inside an interior fridge. Sometimes, in moments of stress, Madonna had power cuts and the old whiny barmaid came screaming out of the defrosting cold room.”
Still, I say, it’s not like you give anything away.
“No I don’t, but goddesses like that are obsessed with their public image and want to control everything about it, so if anyone is to tell anyone anything about her it’s got to be her.”
So has she forgiven you for that now?
    “No.”
    Really?
    “Elephants don’t forget.”
Has she not forgiven you in a jokey way, or has she really not forgiven you?
“She doesn’t trust me any more.”
