A few would be used on Madonna's first album, others appeared on the albums 'Pre-Madonna' and 'In The Beginning' several years later. Madonna's first contract with Sire Records wasn't for an album, but for two singles. Ain't No Big Deal was first chosen as the first single release with Everybody as a B-single. But at that time there was a discussion about who would produce the track; either Steve Bray or Mark Kamins. In the end Steve Bray sold the rights of the song to July Fourth Music. Some discogroup called Barracuda recorded their own version of 'Ain't No Big Deal', before Sire Records had the chance to release Madonna's version. So they dropped Ain't No Big Deal as a single and opted for Everybody instead. In 1986 Reggie Lucas produced the song as a B-single for True Blue (in the US) and Papa Don't Preach (outside the US). The song can be seen as a follow-up to Take A Bow (see video info). The single did pretty well in the charts, reaching #1 in Japan, #5 in Italy and UK and #6 in the US. It was certified Gold in the US and Japan. A Spanish version, called Veras, appeared on one of the maxi-singles. Video Director Michael Haussman and Madonna decided to make the video a direct sequel to Take A Bow. In that video, Madonna was mistreated by her lover, the bullfighter Emilio Munoz. The crowd holds its breath, much like the movie characters on the screen during Evita's funeral. The funky song wasn't just typical for Nikki Fynn, but for Madonna as well. After three successful albums and already some different images and styles, some people wondered 'who's that girl anyway'? The single was a big hit and topped the charts in the US, UK, Canada and Japan. However, it's Madonna's only #1 that was left off The Immaculate Collection. At the 1988 Grammy Awards it was nominated for Best Song From A Motion Picture. Video Peter Rosenthal directed the video for Who's That Girl. It's a comination of images from the movie and images of a boyish Madonna in a suit, dancing around with some kids, a theme she'd already tried for Open Your Heart. Tour Naturally, the theme song couldn't fail on the Who's That Girl tour. Quien es esa nina was a good fit after that other song with Spanish vibes, La Isla Bonita. Dressed in her red flamenco dress Madonna dances around on stage, lets the audience sing along and then ends it on a dramatic tone, softened by a blown kiss at the end.
