  1. Lyrics I just woke up from a fuzzy dream You never would believe the things that I have seen I looked in the mirror and I saw your face You looked right through me, you were miles away All my dreams, they fade away I'll never be the same If you could see me the way you see yourself I can't pretend to be someone else You always love me more, miles away I hear it in your voice, when you're miles away You're not afraid to tell me, miles away I guess we're at our best, when we're miles away So far away, so far away, so far away, so far away So far away, so far away, so far away, so far away When no one's around and I have you here I begin to see the picture, it becomes so clear You always have the biggest heart When we're 6,000 miles apart Too much of no sound Uncomfortable silence can be so loud Those three words are never enough When it's long distance love You always love me more, miles away I hear it in your voice, when you're miles away You're not afraid to tell me, miles away I guess we're at our best, when we're miles away So far away, so far away, so far away, so far away So far away, so far away, so far away, so far away I'm alright Don't be sorry, but it's true When I'm gone, you realize That I'm the best thing that happened to you You always love me more, miles away I hear it in your voice, when you're miles away You're not afraid to tell me, miles away I guess we're at our best, when we're miles away You always love me more, miles away I hear it in your voice, when you're miles away You're not afraid to tell me, miles away I guess we're at our best, when we're miles away So far away, so far away, so far away, so far away So far away, so far away, so far away, so far away So far away, so far away, so far away, so far away So far away, so far away, so far away, so far away So far away, so far away, so far away, so far away Credits Written by Madonna, T. Mosley, J. Timberlake and N. Hills Produced by Timbaland, Justin Timberlake and Danja Programmed and mixed by Demacio "Demo" Castellon Protools editing by Ron Taylor Vocals by Justin Timberlake Guitars by Dan Warner and Justin Timberlake Additional keyboards by Hannon Lane Album Hard Candy Celebration Single This track was used as the theme song for the Japanese TV show Change in the spring of 2008. It was released as the third and final single on November 24th, 2008 in the UK and December 15th in the US. Remixes of the song were created by Thin White Duke, Morgan Page, Johnny Vicious, Demacio "Demo" Castellon, and Aaron LaCrate & Debonair Samir. Because of the drastic change of UK chart climate, Miles Away unfortunately became Madonna's first ever single to miss the Top 20 when it peaked at #39, ending her string of 66 UK Top 20 hits, which will most likely remain unmatched. The song was not sent to US radio stations so it did not enter the Billboard Hot 100. In Japan, Miles Away became a huge hit with selling more than 800,000 digital downloads and earning 3 Japan Gold Disc Awards. » Follow the detailed chart run here. » Buy on Amazon Video Initial reports suggested that Miles Away would get a tour montage video. Unfortunately in the end these plans got cancelled and there was no video to promote this single. Tour "This is for all who know the struggle of long distance relationships. I know you're out there." This introduction of Miles Away during her Sticky & Sweet show in London describes this song best. While her dancers gather and sit down in a circle around her, Madonna plays the acoustic guitar and encourages the crowd to clap and sing along. The screens give another message to the song, showing a stream of world maps and passport stamps and the journey of gypsies travelling around the world, conveniently adding to the atmosphere of the Gypsy section of the show.
  2. Lyrics I ran from my house That cannot contain me From the man that I cannot keep From my mother who haunts me Even though she's gone From my daughter that never sleeps I ran from the noise and the silence From the traffic on the streets I ran to the treetops I ran to the sky Out to the lake Into the rain That matted my hair And soaked my shoes and skin Hid my tears, hid my fears I ran to the forest I ran to the trees I ran and I ran I was looking for me I ran past the churches And the crooked old mailbox Past the apple orchards And the lady that never talks Up into the hills I ran to the cemetery And held my breath And thought about your death I ran to the lake Up into the hills I ran and I ran I'm looking there still And I saw the crumbling tombstones All forgotten names I tasted the rain I tasted my tears I cursed the angels I tasted my fears And the ground gave way beneath my feet And the earth took me in her arms Leaves covered my face Ants marched across my back Black sky opened up Blinding me I ran to the forest I ran to the trees I ran and I ran I was looking for me I ran to the lakes And up to the hill I ran and I ran I'm looking there still And I smelt her burning flesh Her rotting bones Her decay I ran and I ran I'm still running away Credits Written by Madonna and William Orbit Produced by Madonna and William Orbit Percussion by Fergus Gerrand Mer Girl contains an interpolation and certain elements from 'Space', performed by Gabor Szabo Album Ray Of Light Song Although the entire album is very emotional, Mer Girl is definitely the most vulnerable song of Ray Of Light. Madonna talks about her personal life, about 'the man I cannot keep', 'my mother who haunts me' and 'my daughter that never sleeps'. It's a beautiful, but haunting song that perfectly ends the album. While the other songs grew bit by bit from the imagination of Madonna and Orbit, the production of Mer Girl went quite differently. The sample Orbit provided was so perfect that Madonna just started singing the text she had already written. With a few slight changes, the music fit the lyrics perfectly. It was a B-single for The Power Of Good-Bye (US). Tour During the beautiful Geisha-part of the Drowned World Tour, Mo sang the haunting Mer Girl, walking around on a jungle-like decor. The song was interrupted by Sky Fits Heaven, where she had to fight against evil spirits. When she conquered them, she continued Mer Girl. Singing 'And the ground gave way beneath my feet', she kneeled down by a hole in the ground with a shining red glow. Out of it came a shotgun, which she used to shoot the last evil spirit on stage. During her last three shows in LA she changed this part because of the terroristic attacks on New York and Washington on September 11th. Instead of shooting the dancer she puts down the gun and they walk off stage together.

Magnet, T. Nash and G. O'Brien Produced by Trixter and P. Magnet Guitar by Gary O'Brien Madonna's vocals recorded by Mark -Spike- Stent Background vocals by Britney Spears, Penelope Magnet, Courtney Copeland and Emma Roads Album In The Zone My Prerogative Single After the famous performance at the 2003 VMA, Britney teamed up with Madonna for 'Me Against The Music', the first single of her album In The Zone. Originally, Britney had recorded the song alone. When Madonna heard the track, she wanted to transform it into a duet and she added her vocals in the studio. Brought to radio early October and released on November 11th 2003, it immediately got a great response. It made a Hot Shot Debut at #50 in the Hot 100, but stalled at #35. It went #1 in the dance chart in the US and Australia, and in the singles chart in Australia, Spain and Ireland. It had to settle for #2 in Italy and the UK (where it was kept from the top spot by Busted's 'Crashed The Wedding'). Its final week on the Billboard Hot 100 was in January 2004, so Madonna was on the chart in every year from 1983. In 2004, the song was added to Britney's Best Of, titled My Prerogative. Video It was first rumoured that Guy Ritchie would direct Madonna as a leather-clad dominatrix with a string of semi-naked 'bitches' on leashes, and Britney as her assistant. But Liz Rosenberg denied these rumours. In the real video, directed by Paul Hunter, Britney and Madonna discover they're reverse images of each other, from their dance moves to the way they dress. Britney wears black to Madonna's white. Britney's section of the club is populated with cool kids, flaunting pink and purple hair, while Madonna's stakes claim to a territory filled with men in suits, smoking cigars. Though the areas are separated by a wall, somehow Britney can sense Madonna on the other side. At first, it seems like they have a psychic or telepathic connection - but then Madonna's visage starts appearing on television monitors throughout the club, making Britney more determined to find her. Over the course of several rooms, Britney searches desperately as Madonna plays an elaborate cat-and-mouse game with her. When Britney finally catches up with Madonna, M dissolves in the air before Britney's eyes. The video premiered on MTV's Making The Video on October 20th, 2003.
  4. Lyrics Some boys kiss me Some boys hug me I think they're ok If they don't give me proper credit I just walk away They can beg and they can plead But they can't see the light (that's right) 'Cause the boy with the cold hard cash Is always Mister Right 'Cause we are living in a material world And I am a material girl You know that we are living in a material world And I am a material girl Some boys romance Some boys slow dance That's all right with me If they can't raise my interest then I Have to let them be Some boys try and some boys lie but I don't let them play (no way) Only boys who save their pennies Make my rainy day 'Cause we're living in a material world And I am a material girl You know that we are living in a material world And I am a material girl Living in a material world And I am a material girl You know that we are living in a material world And I am a material girl Living in a material world (material) Living in a material world Living in a material world (material) Living in a material world Boys may come and boys may go And that's all right you see Experience has made me rich And now they're after me 'Cause everybody's living in a material world And I am a material girl You know that we are living in a material world And I am a material girl Living in a material world And I am a material girl You know that we are living in a material world And I am a material girl A material, a material, a material, a material world Living in a material world (material) Living in a material world Living in a material world (material) Living in a material world Living in a material world (material) Living in a material world Living in a material world (material) Living in a material world Credits Written by Peter Brown and Robert Rans Produced by Nile Rodgers Bass by Bernard Edwards Guitar, synclavier II, Juno 60 by Nile Rodgers Drums by Tony Thompson Background vocals by Madonna, Curtis King, Frank Simms and George Simms Album Like A Virgin The Immaculate Collection Celebration Single Early 1985 the second single from the Like A Virgin album was released. Material Girl became a #1 hit in Japan, reached #2 in the US and #3 in the UK charts (in the US it was kept from the top spot by 'Can't Fight This Feeling ' by REO Speedwagon & 'One More Try' by Phil Collins). It would soon become a Madonna classic. This song was one of the first examples of Madonna's multi-layered messages. While the lyrics give one message (pure materialism), the video gives the song a different meaning, one of immaterialism and pure love. Unfortunately, like the men in the video, the critics didn't seem to get the real message and accused Madonna of promoting materialism and selfishness. Madonna still gets referred to as the 'Material Girl', and since she's become a mother, often as the 'Material Mum'. After the release of the spiritual Ray Of Light, one often said "the once material girl has gone immaterial and spiritual..." Video The video was shot in Los Angeles and directed by Mary Lambert. Madonna is dressed in a long pink dress, inspired by the one worn by Marilyn Monroe in the 1952 movie Gentlemen Prefer Blondes during her performance of 'Diamonds Are A Girls's Best Friend', which scene in particular was recreated for Madonna's video. Madonna got compared to her idol a lot, but in contrast to Monroe, Madonna isn't a victim. She's in control of her life and her men. In the video she plays with all the boys that are trying to win her love. None of them seem to get her message: while the lyrics talk about pure materialism, that's not what she really wants. It's actor Keith Carradine who knows how to play the game right. In real life however it was actor Sean Penn - whom she met on the set - who won her heart. Tour On the Virgin Tour, Madonna performed Material Girl as the closing song. She walked around the stage in total control of her men while wearing heavy jewelry. But at the end of the performance, Madonna got rid of all the useless accessory while insisting she isn't a material girl at all, and she only needs love. The medley on the Who's That Girl Tour also includes Material Girl. Still wearing her crazy and colourful Dress You Up dress, Madonna goofs around with her two dancers, possibly imitating her then-rival Cyndi Lauper tongue-in-cheek while throwing around 'Madonna dollars'. On the Blond Ambition Tour Madonna goofed around with Niki and Donna, all dressed in a fluffy dressing gown and with curling pins in their hair. Singing the song with a strong mid-western accent, they later get up and reveal a frivolish pink dress underneath their gown, in which they dance around. The performances of Material Girl on the first 3 tours always had something ironic and funny. For the Re-Invention Tour, Madonna's image was changed completely. No glamourous diva in pink Monroe dress; instead we saw a rock chick in army gear who had strapped on her electric guitar. This version totally rocked! Madonna pretended not remembering the words and asked the audience to sing along and help her out with the lyrics. The video and TV screens showed all mathematical equations and pictures of Albert Einstein (which was probably created for I'm So Stupid that got replaced by Material Girl).

Released in 1984, it charted at #4 in the US and #14 in the UK (one of the very few Madonna singles that peaked outside of the UK Top 10). It became the first out of 16 consecutive Top 5 hits on Billboard, a feat that surpassed the Beatles' record. Because of that huge success, the release of Madonna's second album had to be pushed back to the end of 1984. Video A video was made for the '84 release, directed by Arthur Pierson. It basically showed Madonna dancing around all the time in front of a white background, exploiting her Boy Toy image to the top: a wild haircut, dressed in black punky clothes, that she would later describe as 'rags'. Tour Lucky Star got its premiere on the Virgin Tour, where Madonna performed it in her black outfit (with a cross on her chest) similar to the video choreography. Lucky Star was also performed on the Who's That Girl Tour, right after the opening number Open Your Heart. The twinkling keyboard sound and the turning disco ball make all the stars shine around Madonna. But with some extra uptempo beats she knows to turn this love song into a dancy performance. Almost two decades later, Lucky Star was performed live again, on the Confessions Tour. After the exhausting La Isla Bonita, Madonna crashes down on stage, but backup singers Nicki & Donna bring her back on her feet, covering her with a magical cape, which reads "Dancing Queen" on the back (another Abba reference, while the rest of her outfit is a combination of Agnetha's & Frida's from their late 70s tour). As Madonna opens the cape, the inside shows twinkling disco balls (lucky stars?). Madonna performs a great version of Lucky Star, sung over the instrumental of Hung Up, together with Donna and Nicki (the only time the backup singers get their part in the spotlight). At the end of the song, Madonna asks the audience if they want more and sings the chorus of Hung Up, then goes offstage for her final costume change, building up the anticipation for the encore.
  6. Lyrics When I first saw your face I knew that I couldn't hesitate You said, 'Baby, don't go too fast If we do then it may not last.' Time went on and I waited for you I didn't know what else I could do I thought that we'd always be together You said, 'Hold on, it just gets better.' And I believed you, I kept holding on You think that I could never leave you You think I'm not that strong, you know Love won't wait (love won't wait) Forever and a day (love won't wait) Love must live in the here and now Don't ask me how I know (love won't wait) So here I am with my heart on my sleeve You said, 'Baby put your trust in me' But I've come to the end of the line And you have taken up all of my precious time I need to be something special to you Everybody is somebody's fool I won't be a fool, no you got me all wrong You don't know what you had til it's gone And I believed you, I kept holding on You think that I could never leave you You think I'm not that strong, you know Love won't wait (love won't wait) Forever and a day (love won't wait) Love must live in the here and now Don't ask me how I know (love won't wait) Love takes time (love takes time) And you've been taking too long Time never waited for anyone Don't wait too long or I'll be gone (love won't wait) There wasn't anything that I wouldn't do You left me on you even said, 'I love you.' How can we go on when it's tearing us apart Are you going to break my heart Cos I believed you I kept holding on You think that I could never leave you You think I'm not that strong, you're wrong (Love won't wait, love won't wait) Love won't wait (love won't wait) Forever and a day (love won't wait) Love must live in the here and now Don't ask me how I know (love won't wait) Love takes time (love takes time) And you've been taking too long Time never waited for anyone Don't wait too long or I'll be gone (love won't wait) How much longer can I wait for you Can I keep holding on I've got to be strong, got to say goodbye Love won't wait How much longer can I wait for you Hesitate for you baby I've got to be strong, got to say goodbye Goodbye Credits Written by Madonna and Shep Pettibone Produced by Stephen Lipson Vocals by Gary Barlow Album Open Road Song This song was written by Shep and Madonna for the Bedtime Stories album, but then Madonna abandoned the project and started working with Babyface and Dallas Austin instead. This demo wasn't used by Madona anymore and was later given to ex-Take That-member Gary Barlow who recorded his own version for his debut album and scored a UK #1 hit with the catchy track. The Madonna demo surfaced on the Internet mid 2002.

Talking about the professional part, they tried out a few things in the recording studio. None of it ever saw the light of day, except a duet, Love Song. Though produced by two artists with great potential, the result is a rather weak and simple song, failing in its attempt to be positively experimental.

Later that year, the song was used in a commercial for Estée Lauder's Beyond Paradise fragrance. In December 2003 it was released together with Nothing Fails. With both songs appearing on every format, they were considered as a double A-side single in some territories, while charting separately in other places (like UK and Australia). In the US and France, the Love Profusion single was released on March 16th, 2004, using the cover on the left. The same month it already peaked at #1 of the Billboard Hot Dance / Club Play chart. Remixes were made by Blow-Up, The Passengerz, Ralphi Rosario, Craig J. and Ray Caroll. » Buy on Amazon Video Though Nothing Fails was pushed forward as radio single in most territories, it was only Love profusion that got a video. After shooting the Estée Lauder commercial, French director Luc Besson also shot this video in one day in October, using the same concept and visual effects as the commercial. It's a performance video, in which Madonna, in a simple flower dress, walks through two different dimensions: a dark city in stormy weather and a colorful dreamworld with flowers and dancing fairies. "There are a lot of special effects," Madonna said of the clip. "I talked to things that weren't there - which is what you do when you're doing green-screen or blue-screen stuff. There's going to be a lot of fairies dancing around me. "Isn't that exciting?" she added, laughing. "I always have a lot of fairies dancing around me." Tour Surprisingly, Love Profusion wasn't played on the Re-Invention Tour, even though it was Madonna's most recent single. According to rumours she did rehearse the song but cut it out of the final setlist.

Alledgedly it was a personal favorite of hers and in 1995 she included the song - in a slightly remixed version - in Something To Remember and released it as a single in March 1996. But obviously nobody had been waiting for the release of a 12-year old cover song; in its first week it couldn't even get into the US Hot 100. Eventually it crawled up to #78, making it one of Madonna's biggest chart flops. Video Probably one of the reasons why the single flopped was the rather lame video by Jean-Baptiste Mondino. The video (set to the Soulpower Remix) was shot in the middle of the Evita filming, so Madonna only spend two days filming it. The video is basically one long shot of Madonna in a big marble room with waving curtains, where she's yearning for love. Most fans agree it's Madonna's most boring video, a far cry from masterpieces as Express Yourself, Bad Girl or Bedtime Story.

Drowned World, Nothing Really Matters and Mer Girl all have references to Lola, but Little Star is entirely dedicated to her. Madonna performed a beautiful acoustic rendition of this track at The Oprah Winfrey Show in 1998.
  11. Lyrics Your love is like liquid It fills me, it chills me Can't hold it, control it It runs from my touch It slips through my fingers The taste of it lingers Your love is like liquid I want it so much Liquid love Pouring down like rain Liquid love Let it wash all over me Your love is like liquid It drenches, it quenches It drowns me, surrounds me It lies on my skin It flows through my veins Just like warm summer rain Yes your love is like liquid I feel it within Liquid love Pouring down like rain Liquid love Let it wash all over me Liquid love Flowing through my veins Liquid love (love love love...) Liquid love (love love love...) My heart was frozen Till you came and melted it Now my heart is molted Turning into Liquid love Pouring down like rain Liquid love Let it wash all over me Liquid love Flowing through my veins Liquid love (liquid, liquid, liquid,...) Liquid love Pouring down like rain Liquid love Let it wash all over me Liquid love Flowing through my veins Liquid love Liquid love Liquid love Flowing through my veins Credits Written by Madonna and William Orbit Produced by Madonna and William Orbit Album None Song This is one of the several William Orbit collaborations for the Music album that didn't make the cut, probably because Madonna found a new direction with Mirwais for the album. The full track surfaced on the Internet mid 2006.
  12. Lyrics Long awaited darkness falls Casting shadows on the walls In the twilight hour I am alone Sitting near the fireplace Dying embers warm my face In this peaceful solitude All the outside world subdued Everything comes back to me again In the gloom Like an angel passing through my room Half awake and half in dreams Seeing long forgotten scenes So the present runs into the past Now and then become entwined Playing games within my mind Like the embers as they die Love was one prolonged good-bye And it all comes back to me tonight In the gloom Like an angel passing through my room I close my eyes And my twilight images go by All too soon Like an angel passing through my room Everything comes back to me again In the gloom Like an angel passing through my room I close my eyes And my twilight images go by All too soon Like an angel passing through my room Credits Written by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus Produced by Madonna and William Orbit Album None Song This is a cover of the closing song of the last ABBA album 'The Visitors' released in 1981. Madonna recorded it during the Music sessions with William Orbit but her rendition remains unreleased. The demo was leaked online in mid-2008.
  13. Lyrics There's a hole in my heart No one else can fill it There's a feeling I have No one can replace There's a taste in my mouth No one else can give me There's a song that I hear No one can erase Why would I want them to? I'm still looking back at you Why would I want them to be you? You'll always be a part of me What you love can never let you go You'll always be inside of me Like a flower you grow There's a strange melody Sends me straight to heaven There's a voice in my head No one else can hear There's a prayer that I say Always brings me closer To the presence of you To always have you near No one can take your place I'm still looking at your face No one can take the place of you You'll always be a part of me What you love can never let you go You'll always be inside of me Like a flower you grow Like a flower you grow Why would I want them to? I'm still looking back at you Why would I want them to be you? You'll always be a part of me What you love can never let you go You'll always be inside of me Like a flower you grow You'll always be a part of me What you love can never let you go You'll always be inside of me Like a flower you grow Like a flower you grow Credits Written by Madonna and Rick Nowels Album None Song Before she teamed up with William Orbit, Madonna recorded some demos with Babyface for her new album that would become Ray Of Light. Madonna abandoned the project because she thought the songs resembled Bedtime Stories too much. However, Like A Flower hardly sounds as anything on Bedtime Stories, nor did it deserve to be totally rejected. Too bad she didn't use it as B-single or as bonus track on GHV2, because it's a beautiful ballad. The demo surfaced on the Internet mid 2002. Madonna did give the song to another artist to record. In 2004, Italian singer Laura Pausini made her own version in Italian, titled Mi Abbandono A Te, which she used on her album Resta In Ascolto.
  14. Lyrics Como puede ser verdad Last night I dreamt of San Pedro Just like I'd never gone, I knew the song A young girl with eyes like the desert It all seems like yesterday, not far away Tropical the island breeze All of nature, wild and free This is where I long to be La isla bonita And when the samba played The sun would set so high Ring through my ears and sting my eyes Your Spanish lullaby I fell in love with San Pedro Warm wind carried on the sea, he called to me Te dijo te amo I prayed that the days would last They went so fast Tropical the island breeze All of nature, wild and free This is where I long to be La isla bonita And when the samba played The sun would set so high Ring through my ears and sting my eyes Your Spanish lullaby I want to be where the sun warms the sky When it's time for siesta you can watch them go by Beautiful faces, no cares in this world Where a girl loves a boy And a boy loves a girl Last night I dreamt of San Pedro It all seems like yesterday Not far away Tropical the island breeze All of nature, wild and free This is where I long to be La isla bonita And when the samba played The sun would set so high Ring through my ears and sting my eyes Your Spanish lullaby Tropical the island breeze All of nature, wild and free This is where I long to be La isla bonita And when the samba played The sun would set so high Ring through my ears and sting my eyes Your Spanish lullaby La la la la la la la Te dijo te amo La la la la la la la El dijo que te ama Credits Written by Madonna, Patrick Leonard and Bruce Gaitsch Produced by Madonna and Patrick Leonard Keyboards and drum programming by Patrick Leonard Guitars by Bruce Gaitsch Percussion by Paulinho da Costa Background vocals by Madonna, Siedah Garrett and Edie Lehmann La Isla Bonita was first offered to Madonna's greatest rival at that time, Michael Jackson by Patrick Leonard (who wrote the music with Bruce Gaitsch), but he turned it down, so the track was given to Madonna who wrote the lyrics. Album True Blue The Immaculate Collection Something To Remember (Japanese version) Single With the fifth and last single Madonna's music got a spanish-latin influence, something she would use many times again in her career (with Spanish Eyes, Veras, Evita and Lo Que Siente La Mujer, to name a few). For some reason the Americans didn't appreciate the song that much; it went only to #4, while it topped the British, Canadian, French and German charts. Video Mary Lambert directed the hot-blooded video that suited the song perfectly. Madonna shows off a complete Spanish image, dressed in a full-red flamenco dress, dancing around and crawling on the floor between lots of candles. However, when she looks out of the window you see she's not really on an exotic island but in Spanish Harlem, where Spanish artists dance between the garbage. She longs to dance with them and finally no longer resists the temptation and goes out to join them. On a sidenote: try locating a young Benicio Del Toro. Tour La Isla Bonita was performed live for the first time as encore on the Who's That Girl Tour. While the guitarists and percussionists created the Spanish vibe, Madonna appeared in a great red dress. She gave a great vocal performance, backed up by Niki, Donna and Debra, and did some latino-dancing with Angel Ferreira. During the Girlie Show the Spanish vibe was already created a bit for I'm Going Bananas. Madonna finishes that song with some Spanish words and when the tones of La Isla Bonita start, she gets out her Spanish moves too. Madonna is dressed in a blue and white striped shirt; Niki and Donna have a smilar one but in black and red. While one of the musicians walks around bare chest playing the acoustic guitar, Madonna is joined on stage by 4 of her sexy male dancers for another great latino dance. One of the very few classics on the Drowned World Tour was La Isla Bonita, as part of the Spanish-Latin part of the show. Madonna picked up the acoustic guitar and just stood in between the other musicians, surrounding a Flamenco dancer. She encouraged the public to start clapping and singing 'olé ola'. Of course this song was dedicated to and much appreciated by the Spanish audience when the tour opened in Barcelona. Surprisingly, La Isla Bonita was performed again, as part of the Confessions Tour setlist. But it was a new sped-up version with tribal beats, fitting for the hedonistic Disco segment of the show. Madonna tells fans to wear their "dancing shoes", inviting them to a tropical island (with beautiful imagery on the screens) and the dancers join her for a great choreography. Several fans got confused because of the change of tempo and with Madonna taking breaks between lines of the chorus, though. For some, it seemed too much like a 'rushed through' performance... Obviously one of Madonna's tour favourites, La Isla Bonita also made it in the Sticky & Sweet Tour setlist in 2008. The Gypsy rendition was combined with the Romani-Gypsy folk song 'Lela Pala Tute' which debuted a year earlier on Live Earth. This time not Gogol Bordello, but the Arkady Gips band is supporting her onstage. This energetic performance featuring the dancers in a catchy choreography proves to be a crowd pleaser. It's followed by 'Doli Doli', another Gypsy song performed by Arkady Gips. This allows Madonna to catch her breath and to sit down next to sexy Paul who offers her a drink.

Lyrics I want you The right way I want you But I want you to want me too Want you to want me baby Just like I want you Da da da da da da da I'll give you all the love I want in return But half a love Is all I feel Sweet darling It's too bad It's just too sad You don't want me no more But I'm gonna change your mind Some way, somehow I want you The right way I want you But I want you to want me too Want you to want me baby Just like I want you Da da da da da da da One way love Is just a fantasy To share is precious Pure and fair Don't play with something You should cherish for life Oh baby Don't you wanna care Ain't it lonely out there I want you The right way I want you But I want you to want me too Want you to want me baby Just like I want you I want you The right way I want you But I want you to want me too Want me baby Just like I want you Da da da da da da da I want you The right way Want me baby Don't play with something You should cherish for life Credits Written by Leon Ware and T-Boy Ross Produced by Nellee Hooper Featuring Massive Attack Album Inner City Blues Something To Remember Song Madonna contributed her cover of this 1976 Marvin Gaye tune to the 1995 tribute album Inner City Blues - The music of Marvin Gaye. Later that year it was added to the ballads collection Something To Remember. On the latter, two different versions can be found; the original version and an orchestral version, both featuring British band Massive Attack. The song was originally planned as the first single for both albums. However, since both albums appeared on different labels, these release plans were problematic. Although Junior Vasquez made remixes of the song, they were never officially released, nor was the song promoted to radio. Consequently I Want You never got into the charts. Video Although there wasn't a proper single release, I Want You did get a video. In August 1995, fashion photographer Earle Sebastian filmed Madonna in an apartment in New York City. In the black & white video Madonna yearns for love, hesitating to pick up the phone to call her lover. In September 1995 the video was seen a few times on VH1, reaching #11 on the VH1 monitor. It was never shown on MTV. Both music channels quickly forgot about I Want You when the successful You'll See was released in November.

It was first available as a free download on MSN.com on May 16th, 2007. It stayed there free for a week with MSN donating $0.25 per download to the Alliance for Climate Protection. Hey You originates from the Mirwais track Keep The Trance, recorded in 2004 with most of the lyrics coming from that demo, but uses a different melody and instrumentation, made with Pharrell. Madonna performed the song at the Live Earth concert in London on July 7th, 2007. She was the closing act in the new Wembley Stadium, and she opened her 4 song set with Hey You. She just stood onstage looking all gorgeous in a black dress and gave a sincere rendition with a children's choir. Video The video consisted of a series of imagery related to Live Earth, global warming and politics. Among them were images of political leaders, of natural disasters, of starvation, but also of the good things that Mother Earth offers us and that we should cherish. The images were interspersed with parts of the lyrics, written out on the screen.

Album Ray Of Light (Asian/Australian edition) Song Originally Madonna and Orbit had recorded 14 tracks for the album. However Madonna insisted only 13 tracks would appear on the album, because that's a lucky number according to the Kabbalah. That's why this beautiful track was cut from Ray Of Light. It did appear as a bonus track on the Asian/Australian edition and as a B-single on the Ray Of Light-single (US and Europe).
  19. Lyrics Come over here! Some girls they like candy, and others, they like to grind I'll settle for the back of your hand somewhere on my behind Treat me like I'm a bad girl, even when I'm being good to you I don't want you to thank me, you can just spank me, mmm Some guys like to sweet talk, and others, they like to tease Tie my hands behind my back and, ooo, I'm in ecstasy Don't slobber me with kisses, I can get that from my sisters Before I get too cranky, you better... Like hanky panky (hanky panky) Nothing like a good spanky (good spanky) Don't take out your handkerchiefs I don't wanna cry, I just wanna hanky panky Like hanky panky (hanky panky) Nothing like a good spanky (good spanky) Don't take out your handkerchiefs I don't wanna cry, I just wanna hanky panky guy Ooooh Please don't call a doctor, 'cause there's nothing wrong with me I just like things a little rough and you better not disagree 'Cause I don't like a big softie (no) I like someone mean and bossy Let me speak to you frankly, you better... Like hanky panky (hanky panky) Nothing like a good spanky (good spanky) Don't take out your handkerchiefs I don't wanna cry, I just wanna hanky panky Like hanky panky (hanky panky) Nothing like a good spanky (good spanky) Don't take out your handkerchiefs I don't wanna cry, I just wanna hanky panky guy Ooooh, yeah What about? Yeah. That's an interesting... Ooooh My bottom hurts just thinking about it (She wants you to) Treat me like I'm a bad girl (She needs you to) Even when I'm being good to you I don't want you to thank me (Don't thank her), you better... Like hanky panky (hanky panky) Nothing like a good spanky (good spanky) Don't take out your handkerchiefs I don't wanna cry, I just wanna hanky panky Like hanky panky (hanky panky) Nothing like a good spanky (good spanky) Don't take out your handkerchiefs I don't wanna cry, I just wanna hanky panky guy (Hanky panky) Oooh, yeah (Good spanky) Get the picture? (Don't wanna cry, I just wanna) That's the way I came into this world (hanky panky) The doctor said, "Lady, she's a beautiful girl" (good spanky) He gave me a spanky and the doctor smiled (don't wanna cry, I just wanna) So give it up, honey, 'cause I want it Yeah (Hanky panky, good spanky, don't wanna cry, I just wanna) Credits Written by Madonna and Patrick Leonard Produced by Madonna and Patrick Leonard Mixed by Brian Malouf Drums by Jeffrey Porcaro Bass by Guy Pratt Keyboards by Patrick Leonard Background vocals by Donna DeLory, Niki Haris and Ndea Davenport Album I'm Breathless Single Since Vogue was actually a separate single, Hanky Panky was the first and only single from I'm Breathless. Squeezed in between smash hits Vogue and Justify My Love and without a proper video it's often forgotten. It got to #10 in the US, enough for Gold and it reached #2 in Canada and the UK (where it was kept from #1 by Partners in KRYME's 'Turtle Power'). It marked one of Madonna's first affiliations with the S&M-theme, though with a very ironic twist. » Buy on Amazon Video Being on her Blond Ambition Tour Madonna didn't have time to shoot a proper video for Hanky Panky. Instead music channels broadcast the live performance of the song on tour. Madonna, dressed in a green pinup dress, asks her Dick Tracy for a good spanky. Warren Beatty refused to play the Dick Tracy character, so it was done by a dancer. Tour Like described above, Hanky Panky made its live premiere on the Blond Ambition Tour. Surprisingly, the song made a comeback 14 years later on the Re-Invention Tour. No children or Kabbalah can keep our girl from yearning for a nice smack on her bottom. Dressed in a red & white striped circus outfit and fish stockings, she and the girls did some sexy and playful dancing, while crying out "I just want a hanky panky guy, is that asking for too much?!".

Deering Produced by Madonna and Dave -Jam- Hall Human Nature contains a sample of 'What You Need', performed by Main Source. Album Bedtime Stories GHV2 Single In the summer of 1995, the fourth and final single was released. With Human Nature Madonna gets back on her critics, who slagged her off during the Erotica period. She ridicules the taboos surrounding sex; "why do people get hung up over something most of us do and enjoy? Get over it, handle it. Express yourself, don't repress yourself." Great message, but it didn't sell: with a #46 in the US it scored even worse than Bedtime Story. In the UK, Canada and Japan it scored a bit better with respectively a #8, #9 and #10 position. In the Hot Dance / Club Play it stalled at #2 for three weeks. On the other hand, it's one of just a few Madonna songs that scored on the R&B airplay chart. » Buy on Amazon Video With Justify My Love and Open Your Heart photographer Jean-Baptiste Mondino had already proven to be a great director. For Human Nature he filmed Madonna and her dancers in a fantastic choreography. Though they're all dressed in a leather S&M-outfit, the video is rather humorous than erotic. It also shows Madonna using her whip on her own chihuahua Chiquita, who's equally dressed up in leather. Tour A surprise on the Drowned World Tour was Human Nature. Dressed in a shirt with US flag-motive, Madonna wrapped herself and her dancers up in ropes again for this fantastic song. She climbed on a mechanical bull, dancing on top, while a vocoder played with the lyrics 'oops I didn't know we couldn't talk about seeeeeeeeex!'. Madonna translated the relationship between Britney Spears and the press into a new version of Human Nature on the Sticky & Sweet Tour. While the screens show Britney trapped in an elevator, Madonna straps on the electric guitar to give the song a rocking ballsy make-over. Dressed in just a see-through outfit revealing her sexy black underwear, a top hat and knee-high boots, she looks as hot as she did in the original video 13 years earlier. At the end, the song's trademark line 'I'm not your ***CENSORED***' is cleverly combined with Spears' 'It's Britney ***CENSORED***!'. The pop star joined Madonna live onstage at the Los Angeles show.

It's the city of dreams and superficiality. It's the place where you forget about the really interesting things in life. In Hollywood you can lose your memory and your vision of the future. You can lose everything because you can lose yourself." With this motto, Madonna released Hollywood as second American Life single on July 7 (Europe) and 8 (US), 2003. Remixes were made by Jacques Lu Cont, The Micronauts, Paul Oakenfold, Deepsky and Victor Calderone. The single debuted at UK's #2 (Beyonce Knowles' Crazy In Love' kept it from the top spot), but already dropped out of the top 10 in its 2nd week. In Australia it debuted at #16; in France at #22, rising up to #4. And in the US, the single became Madonna's first to miss the US Hot 100 since Everybody, due to the boycott of American radio stations after M opposed to the US-Iraq war. Madonna portrays several glamourous Hollywood characters, inspired by famous actrices. Once blond, glamourous and covered with expensive jewelry (which originally belonged to Mae West!), then red-head, sexy and playful. But despite all the glamour, we see the flaws of Hollywood: the struggle to stay interesting and beautiful. For the latter she's even seen receiving Botox injections in her face. No doubt it's her answer to the rumours that she herself is using Botox. But is this her way to admit it or to joke with it? The typical Madonna game... The video editor Dustin Robertson also made a remix video, which includes some unseen footage and which is played on a mix of the official remixes. It quickly became clear that Madonna and Mondino were inspired by the art work of famous photographer Guy Bourdin. Madonna herself has said before that she likes his work and has some of his photos in her bedroom. Check Bourdin's website for a complete comparison between his work and the Hollywood video. Bourdin's son quickly smelled easy money and filed a lawsuit on the ground of copyright. Tour When promoting her new American Life album, Madonna performed Hollywood several times. But it was the legendary 2003 VMA that made the song famous. The Thin White Duck mix followed after Britney's and Xtina's homage to Like A Virgin, with them being Madonna's two little brides. When Madonna teasingly kissed her brides on the mouth, it caused an outrage in the press for months. On the Re-Invention Tour however, Madonna didn't perform the song. Instead it was used as an interlude between Material Girl and Hanky Panky, giving Madonna the time for her costume change. It was again the Thin White Duck mix playing, while dancers showed off their "Hollywood talents": a fire artist, a belly dancer, a tap dancer, a skateboarder, and most of all Cloud, the break dancer who stole the show. With the display of fortune cards on the screen, the performance symbolized the superficiality of Hollywood.

Although it's an anthem among fans, it didn't chart very well; it reached only #16 on the US Billboard chart. It did better in the UK (#6) and Australia (#4). It re-entered the UK chart in 1985 (when the debut album was re-issued), making it to the #2 spot (stuck behind her own smash hit Into The Groove). There was a UK re-release to promote The Immaculate Collection in 1991 (with a #5 peak). Charting together with Lucky Star, it became her first #1 on the Hot Dance / Club Play chart, holding the top spot for 5 weeks. But it's the live performances that made the song so well-known. Holiday was performed on Madonna's first 6 tours and except for the Virgin Tour, it was always used as one of the final songs to end the show with a dance classic. Video The original video for Holiday was reportedly so bad that it was never released. Instead the recording of a television performance was used. The performance of Holiday on the Blond Ambition Tour in Houston was taped by Alek Keshishian and released in 1991 (to promote the single re-release and the Truth or Dare documentary). Even the videos say so; you have to listen to Holiday live and dance along. Tour The Virgin Tour was the only tour that placed Holiday in the beginning of the show. It was the second song in the setlist. Still wearing the colourful jacket, Madonna does a light-hearted choreography with her two dancers to a version similar to the one on the album. She even takes a break during the performance to talk to the audience. On the other tours it was always among the closing numbers. Same thing for the Who's That Girl Tour where Madonna ends the song twice, then continues for more. Finally, she asks the audience for a comb to fix her messy hair, so she can finish the song. This version was much more rock sounding featuring a lot of guitar. As it was performed after then-current megahit Who's That Girl, Madonna cemented the tradition of ending her shows with a combination of songs from both ends of her career. On the Blond Ambition Tour, Holiday turns into a pyjama party, with Madonna in white pants and polkadot blouse and all the dancers in pyjamas dancing around on stage. The crowd goes wild, partying along, and Madonna asks to "do the bus stop". The performance is so energetic that it's used on music channels for the re-release of Holiday. Holiday receives a very alternative remake for the Girlie Show. Dressed in long navy coats and with a large American flag in the background, Madonna and her dancers perform a military version of the song. The strict percussion soon has to give in to the dance tones. It gets total fun when they turn it into a jam, mixing in a military cadence. Madonna pauses the song for a military drill with the dancers and the audience. At the end of the song - which is also the end of the show, before the encores - they all start goofing around, jamming in a rain of confetti strings. As Madonna refuses to leave the stage in a kind of James Brown imitation, Niki & Donna end up chasing her and carrying her off stage. The Drowned World Tour hardly featured any of Madonna's 80s classics, but what would a Madonna tour be without Holiday! Wearing a black shirt with 'mother' in front and 'f*ckers' on the back, and a white fur coat on top, Madonna chooses this 18-year old dance song to end her show. She, Niki and Donna rock on stage and the crowd goes hysteric. This ghetto-pimp version uses samples of Stardust's 'Music Sounds Better With You' (inspired by an unofficial mash-up of the songs). The sixth tour performance was on the Re-Invention Tour where it was the final song of the show. 21 years after its initial release, Holiday is now re-invented into a tribal song, which features Madonna and her dancers in white shirts and a long Scottish kilt. They start off sitting down on stage doing moves to the tribal beat, which then gets them into a cool group dance. The catwalk comes down again and they jump and dance around on top of it while confetti is shot in the air. At the end the tribal beat turns into a fading heart beat as Madonna and her dancers disappear behind the big screens.
  23. Lyrics (Repeat history, just repeat history,...) I looked all around the world Nobody has it better than we do Uh huh One thing I don't understand Why don't we help more people 'cause we can Uh huh (All around the world, all around the world,...) Why are we separated Defined by our greed and hatred Why aren't we all united I'm so sick and tired of fighting Why aren't we all together Let's end this fight forever Why are we still divided I'm so sick and tired of fighting How many tragedies will we see before we come together Uh huh It's easy to forget we have a power to make things better Uh huh I have a dream But dreams are not for free We all need to change Or just repeat history (just repeat history, just repeat history,...) (All around the world, all around the world,...) Why are we separated Defined by our greed and hatred Why aren't we all united I'm so sick and tired of fighting Why aren't we all together Let's end this fight forever Why are we still divided I'm so sick and tired of fighting (Just repeat history, just repeat history,...) 24. Lyrics It's all an illusion There's too much confusion It's all an illusion There's too much confusion, confusion, confusion,... Down, down, down in your heart Find, find, find the secret Turn, turn, turn your head around Baby we can do it, we can do it all right Do you believe in love at first sight It's an illusion, I don't care Do you believe I can make you feel better Too much confusion, come on over here Can we get together I really, I really wanna be with you Come on, check it out with me I hope you, I hope you feel the same way too I searched, I searched, I searched my whole life To find, to find, to find the secret And all I did was open up my eyes Baby we can do it, we can do it all right Do you believe that we can change the future Do you believe I can make you feel better Can we get together I really, I really wanna be with you Come on, check it out with me I hope you, I hope you feel the same way too Can we get together I really, I really wanna be with you Come on, check it out with me I hope you, I hope you feel the same way too It's all an illusion There's too much confusion I'll make you feel better If it's bitter at the start, then it's sweeter in the end Do you believe in love at first sight It's an illusion, I don't care Do you believe I can make you feel better Too much confusion, come on over here Can we get together I really, I really wanna be with you Come on, check it out with me I hope you, I hope you feel the same way too Can we get together I really wanna be with you Come on, check it out with me I hope you feel the same way too It's all an illusion There's too much confusion I'll make you feel better If it's bitter at the start, then it's sweeter in the end Credits Written by Madonna, Anders Bagge, Peer Astrom and Stuart Price Produced by Madonna and Stuart Price Original production by Anders Bagge and Peer Astrom Album Confessions On A Dance Floor Single This clubby, feel-good song is the 3rd single from Confessions On A Dance Floor, released commercially early June in the US and mid-June in Europe. The UK release date was July 24th to coincide with the British leg of the Confessions Tour (it reached #7 there). The single cover features Madonna together with her band and dancers. Thanks to the remixes by Jacques Lu Cont, Danny Howells, Tiefschwarz and James Holden, Get Together became Madonna's 36th #1 hit on the Hot Dance / Club Play chart, confirming her status as the 'Dancing Queen'. It failed to chart on the Billboard Hot 100, but entered the Bubbling Under chart, peaking at #6. » Buy on Amazon Video With Madonna performing on her Confessions Tour, there was no time to make a studio video for Get Together. Instead of opting for a live performance video, commercial and video director team Logan had an animation video made, using footage from her performance at London's Koko Club (Nov. 2005) which was digitally altered and animated onto a digital futuristic city/nature background, which is reminiscent to the video style of Daft Punk. The video premiered online and on music TV channels mid-June 2006. Tour After opening her Confessions Tour with Future Lovers, Madonna performs Get Together on the main stage, dancing with two male dancers. The backdrop is in all tones of red with pictures of Steven Klein. She teases the fans on front row (including yours truly) by lying down on the catwalk and seducingly rolling around. To see her from so close, it's certainly *not* an illusion!
  25. Lyrics Just one kiss on my lips Was all it took to seal the future Just one look from your eyes Was like a certain kind of torture Once upon a time There was a boy and there was a girl Just one touch from your hands Was all it took to make me falter Forbidden love, are we supposed to be together Forbidden love, forbidden love Forbidden love, we seal our destiny forever Forbidden love, forbidden love Just one smile on your face Was all it took to change my fortune Just one word from your mouth Was all I needed to be certain Once upon a time There was a boy and there was a girl Hearts that intertwine They lived in a different kind of world Forbidden love, are we supposed to be together Forbidden love, forbidden love Forbidden love, we seal our destiny forever Forbidden love, forbidden love Just one kiss, just one touch, just one look (Five, four, three, two, one) Forbidden love, are we supposed to be together Forbidden love, forbidden love Forbidden love, we seal our destiny forever Forbidden love, forbidden love Forbidden love, are we supposed to be together? Forbidden love, forbidden love Forbidden love, we seal our destiny forever Forbidden love, forbidden love Just one kiss, just one touch, just one look, just one love (Five, four, three, two, one) Credits Written by Madonna and Stuart Price Produced by Madonna and Stuart Price Mixed by Stuart Price Album Confessions On A Dance Floor Tour After dying at the end of her fantastic Live To Tell performance on the Confessions Tour, Madonna is resurrected on the tones of Forbidden Love. As she dances on and around the cross, two male dancers perform a beautiful hand choreography and hug each other before disappearing from the stage. On the European tour (which coincided with the Lebanese-Israeli war) the dancers have the symbols of the Star of David and the crescent moon painted on their body. So whether forbidden love is talking about love between two males or between different cultures or religions, is up to the interpretation of the viewer. On the screen all these symbols that divide us are smashed and ultimately there's the embryo, the symbol of life and love. Madonna joins the two dancers and they do the hand choreography together. At the end, Madonna picks up her crown of thorns and disappears.
