  1. Lyrics I should have seen the sign way back then When she told me that you were her best friend And now she's rolling, rolling, rolling And you were stolen, stolen, stolen She started dressing like me and talking like me It freaked me out She started calling you up in the middle of the night What's that about? I just want to be there when you discover You wake up in the morning next to your new lover She might cook you breakfast and love you in the shower The flavor of the moment, 'cause she don't have what's ours She's not me She doesn't have my name She'll never have what I have It won't be the same It won't be the same I should have seen the sign when you were here Under a different light, it's all so clear She was stealing, stealing, stealing And now you're feeling, feeling, feeling She started dyeing her hair and Wearing the same perfume as me She started reading my books And stealing my looks and lingerie I just want to be there when you discover You wake up in the morning next to your new lover She might make you breakfast and love you in the shower The thrill is momentary, 'cause she don't have what's ours She's not me She doesn't have my name She'll never have what I have It won't be the same It won't be the same She is licking her lips And she's batting her eyes She's not me She's got legs up to there And such beautiful hair She's not me Oh, devoted for life Make a beautiful wife She's not me If you spend some more time I guarantee you will find She's not me I know I can do it better If someone wants to pimp your style And hang with you a little while And make up for all the things you lack You're gonna have to watch your back She's not me She doesn't have my name She'll never have what I have It won't be the same It won't be the same Never let you forget She's not me She's not me, and she never will be Never let you forget She's not me She's not me, and she never will be (Pharrell:) Gotta find a new way to show your feelings I guess it was some bullshit saying you love me, love me Guess my expectation hit the ceiling When you come back it could cost us trust, trust me Wendy! She's not me She's not me She's not me, and she never will be She's not me She's not me She's not me, and she never will be She never will be Never will be Never will be Never will be Never will be Never will be Never will be Never will be Never will be Never will be Never will be Never will be She's not me, and she never will be Never will be Never will be Never will be She's not me Never will be Never will be She's not me, and she never will be She never will be Credits Written by Pharrell Williams and Madonna Produced by The Neptunes Co-produced by Madonna Guitar by Wendy Melvoin Mixed by Spike Stent and Andrew Coleman Album Hard Candy Song The title line of this 80s-style dance-funk track comes from Pharrell. Madonna referred to the six-plus minutes long song as "That's my follow-up to Gloria Gaynor's 'I Will Survive'." Wendy Melvoin (the twin sister of Susannah Melvoin, co-writer of Candy Perfume Girl) from Prince's legendary band The Revolution appears as a guest and plays guitar. Tour "Have you ever had a best friend who wanted to do everything you did, including ***CENSORED*** your boyfriend?" Madonna immediately sets the tone when performing this rivalry song on the Sticky & Sweet Tour. But like a true Madonna performance, she again adds an extra layer to the song. While the lyrics are referring to an unfaithful lover, the show act plays with different Madonna images from throughout her whole career, visualized on the screens. This way, the phrase "she's not me" gets a whole different meaning. Then four female dancers appear on the catwalk, each representing a certain Madonna character: 'Material Girl' with the pink Monroe dress, 'Open Your Heart' with the Gaultier bustier, 'Like A Virgin' with the wedding dress and 'Blond Ambition' with the pointy bra. Madonna walks up to them and starts poking and making fun of them. She rips off the wedding veil, tries to strangle one of them with it and then kisses her full on the lips. It's her way of telling all the critics that those images of her aren't really her. For the breakdown of the song at the end, she goes totally crazy, dancing and spasming on stage, throwing away her heart-shaped glasses and taking off her old school jacket & hotpants.

So she decided to make this song in Sanskrit. It was a B-single for Frozen (US and UK). She performed Shanti/Ashtangi and Ray Of Light on the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards, with Lenny Kravitz as guitar backup.

  6. Lyrics You lost your reputation on a woman You didn't understand or care to know You get your education from your lovers But now there's just no place for you to go It doesn't pay To be a runaway lover It doesn't pay To give away what you lack You'll never get your money back You're set adrift with no direction Just like a ship that's lost at sea You don't care where you drop your anchor Make sure it doesn't land on me It doesn't pay To be a runaway lover It doesn't pay To give away what you lack You'll never get your money back It doesn't pay To be a runaway lover It doesn't pay To give away what you lack You'll never get your money back (It doesn't pay, doesn't pay, doesn't pay,...) Walking around on a cloud 'Cause every girl you meet just trips on you Saying your name out loud I guess you met your match Now what will you do Uh uh, no way It doesn't pay To be a runaway lover It doesn't pay To give away what you lack You'll never get your money back It doesn't pay To be a runaway lover It doesn't pay To give away what you lack You'll never get your money back Walking around on a cloud 'Cause every girl you meet just trips on you Saying your name out loud I guess you met your match Now what will you do It doesn't pay It doesn't pay It doesn't pay To give your heart away To a runaway lover Uh uh, no way Uh uh, no way Uh uh, no way Credits Written by Madonna and William Orbit Produced by Madonna and William Orbit Keyboards, guitars and backing vocals by William Orbit Drums by Steve Sidelnyk Album Music Song This song moves away from the deep, spiritual lyrics that were remarkable for Ray Of Light, but instead opts for a heavy dancefloor track. Madonna performed it during her gigs at the Roseland Ballroom and the Brixton Academy in November 2000, but nixed the song from her Drowned World Tour.

Lyrics There is no such thing as revenge You will not give as good as you got There is no such thing as an eye for an eye If you think you're the giver, you're not There is no such thing as regret There is no point in placing the blame Hate destroys the one who hate And everyone suffers the same What you see Is not necessarily what you get The eyes are the window to the soul Take your judgements And let them go There are only love and respect To the known self be true When you point the finger There are three fingers pointed back at you What you see Is not necessarily what you get The eyes are the window to the soul Take your judgements And let them go Let them go Let them go Let them go Recognize that love is alive in everyone Recognize that love is in us all What you see Is not necessarily what you get The eyes are the window to the soul Take your judgements And let them go Let them go Let them go Let them go What you see Is not necessarily what you get The eyes are the window to the soul Take your judgements And let them go Let them go Let them go Let them go Credits Written by Madonna, Rick Nowels and Robert Miles Album None Song Madonna recorded this song during the Ray Of Light recording sessions, but didn't select it to be on the album. The demo surfaced on the Internet mid 2002.

Lyrics I'm talking, I'm talking I believe in the power of love I'm singing, I'm singing I believe that you can rescue me With you I'm not a little girl With you I'm not a man When all the hurt inside of me comes out You understand You see that I'm ferocious You see that I am weak You see that I am silly And pretentious and a freak But I don't feel too strange for you Don't know exactly what you do I think when love is pure you try To understand the reasons why And I prefer this mystery It cancels out my misery And gives me hope that there could be A person that loves me Rescue me (Rescue me) It's hard to believe Your love has given me hope Rescue me (Rescue me) It's hard to believe I'm drowning, baby throw out your rope With you I'm not a fascist Can't play you like a toy And when I need to dominate You're not my little boy You see that I am hungry For a life of understanding And you forgive my angry little heart When she's demanding You bring me to my knees While I'm scratching out the eyes Of a world I want to conquer And deliver, and despise And right while I am kneeling there I suddenly begin to care And understand that there could be A person that loves me Rescue me (Rescue me) It's hard to believe Your love has given me hope Rescue me (Rescue me) It's hard to believe I'm drowning, baby throw out your rope Love is understanding It's hard to believe Life can be so demanding I'm sending out an S.O.S. After the success of Justify My Love, Rescue Me was released in February 1991 (US) - April 1991 (Europe). This song, which shows how powerful Madonna's voice really is, is my personal favorite. Though often over-looked, it was a top 10 hit, reaching #9 in the US (Gold), #3 in the UK and #4 in Canada. In Japan and Australia it was good for respectively #11 and #15. On the Hot Dance / Club Play it peaked at #5. » Buy on Amazon Video After finishing her Blond Ambition Tour and releasing Justify My Love (with all the commotion surrounding the controversial video), Madonna was busy with movie projects and other stuff, so she lacked the time to make a video to support Rescue Me. Since Rescue Me was never performed live, there couldn't be a live performance video either, so it became one of the few Madonna singles without a video. However, some music channels showed a video compiled of different live performances.
  11. Lyrics Zephyr in the sky at night I wonder Do my tears of mourning Sink beneath the sun She's got herself a universe gone quickly For the call of thunder Threatens everyone And I feel Like I just got home And I feel And I feel Like I just got home And I feel Faster than the speeding light she's flying Trying to remember where it all began She's got herself a little piece of heaven Waiting for the time when earth shall be as one And I feel Like I just got home And I feel And I feel Like I just got home And I feel Quicker than a ray of light Quicker than a ray of light Quicker than a ray of light Zephyr in the sky at night I wonder Do my tears of mourning Sink beneath the sun She's got herself a universe gone quickly For the call of thunder Threatens everyone And I feel Quicker than a ray of light Then gone for Someone else shall be there Thru the endless years She's got herself a universe She's got herself a universe She's got herself a universe And I feel And I feel And I feel Like I just got home And I feel Quicker than a ray of light she's flying Quicker than a ray of light I'm flying Credits Written by Madonna, William Orbit, Clive Muldoon, Dave Curtis and Christine Leach Produced by Madonna and William Orbit This song is based on the track 'Sepheryn', written and performed by Curtis & Muldoon. Album Ray Of Light GHV2 Celebration Single The title track was released in April (UK) / June (US) 1998 as the second single. The tune got known very quickly. Only few people knew it was actually a rework of the much slower 1971 song 'Sepheryn' by Curtis & Muldoon. In the US the single debuted at #5 - which was her highest US single debut in her career - and was certified Gold. In the UK it topped at #2 (it was kept from the top spot by All Saints' 'Under The Bridge / Lady Marmalade'); in Japan, Australia and Canada it got to respectively #5, #6 and #7. » Buy on Amazon Video Fitting this fast-paced dance song, Swedish director Jonas Akerlund provided a high-speed video, showing ordinary people doing their daily routines: getting up, driving to work, having a quick lunch, working in the office, coming home and having a party in the evening. All these images are intertwined with the beauty aspects of life: playing children, an echography, two friends playing chess, etc. In between Madonna, dressed in casual jeans but looking gorgeous, shakes to a great dance routine. And at the party in the evening she's the star of the dance floor. The video - which was filmed in New York, LA and Sweden - was loved by the critics and received several awards, including 'Best Video', 'Best Female Video', 'Best Direction', 'Best Choreography' and 'Best Editing' at the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards, and 'Best Short-Form Music Video' at the 1999 Grammy Awards. There are also two remix videos. Tour Madonna finishes the punk/rock-part of the Drowned World Tour with Ray Of Light, with all the dancers dancing and jumping up and down on stage on the guitar beats of Monte. On a big screen there's an extended version of the Ray Of Light video, adapted by Dan-o-Rama. On the Confessions Tour Madonna made up for nixing the song from the previous tour. Again it ended up in the rock-part of the show, this time with Madonna herself on electric guitar. She urges all the fans to jump all through the song and we gladly obliged. The 6 male dancers, dressed in black & white, get to the end of the catwalk, giving away a great synchronious choreography. One of the dancing highlights! As the Sticky & Sweet Tour got a lot of rock influences, Ray Of Light couldn't afford to be left out. Being part of the Futuristic Rave segment, Madonna gets kicking on the electric guitar at the end of the catwalk while the Hamutsun Serve dancers perform a robotic choreography next to her. While the performance already has a striking resemblance to past renditions of the song, the backdrop oddly seems like an almost identical copy of the previous tour. Nonetheless, the song gets the crowd dancing and raving along with this masterpiece.

    Rain

Lyrics I feel it It's coming Rain Feel it on my finger tips Hear it on my window pane Your love's coming down like Rain Wash away my sorrow Take away my pain Your love's coming down like Rain When your lips are burning mine And you take the time to tell me how you feel When you listen to my words And I know you've heard I know it's real Rain is what this thunder brings For the first time I can hear my heart sing Call me a fool but I know I'm not I'm gonna stand out here on the mountain top Til I feel your Rain Feel it on my finger tips Hear it on my window pane Your love's coming down like Rain Wash away my sorrow Take away my pain Your love's coming down like Rain When you looked into my eyes And you said goodbye Could you see my tears When I turned the other way Did you hear me say I'd wait for all the dark clouds bursting in a perfect sky You promised me when you said goodbye That you'd return when the storm was done And now I'll wait for the light I'll wait for the sun Till I feel your Rain Feel it on my finger tips Hear it on my window pane Your love's coming down like Rain Wash away my sorrow Take away my pain Your love's coming down like Here comes the sun Here comes the sun And I say Never go away Waiting is the hardest thing It's strange I feel like I've known you before I tell myself that if I believe in you And I want to understand you In the dream of you More and more and more With all my heart and all my soul When I'm with you That by sheer force of will I feel like a magical child I will raise you from the ground Everything strange And without a sound you'll appear Everything wild And surrender to me To love Rain is what the thunder brings For the first time I can hear my heart sing Call me a fool but I know I'm not I'm gonna stand out here on the mountain top Till I feel your Rain I feel it It's coming Your love's coming down like Rain I feel it It's coming Your love's coming down like Rain Feel it on my finger tips Hear it on my window pane Your love's coming down like Rain Wash away my sorrow Take away my pain Your love's coming down like Rain I feel it It's coming Your love's coming down like Rain I feel it It's coming Your love's coming down like Rain Step out on a mountain top and wait for you to call my name Rain Credits Written by Madonna and Shep Pettibone Produced by Madonna and Shep Pettibone Sequencing, keyboards and programming by Shep Pettibone Drum programming by Tony Shimkin Album Erotica Something To Remember Single This stunningly beautiful ballad was a break from the controversy surrounding the Erotica album. It was released worldwide in the summer of 1993 as fifth single. Though it got a lot of airplay it only went to #14 in the US and #7 in the UK. It charted better in Canada (#1), Japan (#2) and Australia (#5). » Buy on Amazon Video A beautiful song deserves a stunning video, and that's what Rain got. Mark Romanek filmed everything in black & white, then had it colored manually in blue, a technique used in the early movie industry. The video shows the making of a video by a group of Asian technicians. Madonna, wearing a short black wig (!), walks around on the set and sings Rain, standing next to glass walls that drip with (fake) rain. The video got two well-deserved awards at the 1993 MTV VMA: 'Best Art Direction' and 'Best Cinematography'. Tour Beautiful as it might be, Rain was only performed live on the Girlie Show. But it certainly was a performance that did justice to the song. It's one of the best examples of the perfect harmony between the voices of Madonna, Niki and Donna. The heart-warming performance also included some lines of the Temptations' classic hit 'Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)'. At the end there's a beautiful instrumental outro with the classic song 'Singing In The Rain', while the dancers do a choreography with umbrellas, inspired by Gene Kelly's legendary rendition in the 1952 musical Singin' In The Rain, with the Pierrot fancying one of the butterfly 'rain girls'. Rain made a comeback on the Sticky & Sweet Tour as a video interlude between the Old School and Gypsy sections. However, only part of the chorus was used in combination with the Eurythmics hit 'Here Comes The Rain Again'. The giant screens portray a CG animation of a fairy witnessing the transformation of a caterpillar to a butterfly in the rain. Meanwhile, the Hamutsun Serve dancers perform a Japanese choreography, adding to the atmosphere.

In a fansite interview Luis explains: "Queen's English is another term for our "gay pig latin" that we use to speak. We thought it would be funny to capitalize on this way of speaking because we spoke it so much to each other. Whether it was reading some other queen or just trying to communicate with each other without the other person knowing what we were talking about. Madonna liked the idea and said she was down to sing the hook."
  14. Lyrics Your heart is not open So I must go The spell has been broken I loved you so Freedom comes when you learn to let go Creation comes when you learn to say no You were my lesson I had to learn I was your fortress You had to burn Pain is a warning that something's wrong I pray to God that it won't be long Do you wanna go higher? There's nothing left to try There's no place left to hide There's no greater power than the power of good-bye Your heart is not open So I must go The spell has been broken I loved you so You were my lesson I had to learn I was your fortress There's nothing left to lose There's no more heart to bruise There's no greater power than the power of good-bye Learn to say good-bye I yearn to say good-bye There's nothing left to try There's no more places to hide There's no greater power than the power of good-bye There's nothing left to lose There's no more heart to bruise There's no greater power than the power of good-bye Credits Written by Madonna and Rick Nowels Produced by Madonna, William Orbit and Patrick Leonard String arrangement by Craig Armstrong Album Ray Of Light GHV2 Single This beautiful ballad about a painful breakup was the fourth single, released late 1998. Though Madonna's ballads usually do well in the charts (and this one deserved to), it only went to #11 in the US, #6 in the UK and Canada, and #7 in Japan. Video Director Matthew Rolston shot the blue-themed video at the 'Silver Top' mansion and Malibu beach in LA. Madonna says goodbye to her lover, who's played by actor Goran Visnjic. After a last confrontation between the lovers, Madonna sets for the beach, where she seems to drown herself at the end of the video. Whether she actually does, is a point of discussion among fans. Some scenes of the video (like the kiss and the chess game) are inspired by the original The Thomas Crown Affair movie (featuring Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway), while the beach scene is a homage to Joan Crawford's performance in the 1946 movie Humoresque.

Lyrics I can't remember When I was young I can't explain If it was wrong My life goes on But not the same Into your eyes My face remains I've been so high I've been so down Up to the skies Down to the ground I was so blind I could not see Your paradise Is not for me Autour de moi Je ne vois pas Qui sont les anges Surement pas moi Encore une fois Je suis cassée Encore une fois Je n'y crois pas I've been so high I've been so down Up to the skies Down to the ground There is a light Above my head Into your eyes My face remains I've been so high I've been so down Up to the skies Down to the ground I can't remember When I was young Into your eyes My face remains Into your eyes My face remains I've been so high I've been so down Up to the skies Down to the ground I've been so high I've been so down Up to the skies Down to the ground Credits Written by Mirwais Ahmadzaï and Madonna Produced by Mirwais Ahmadzaï and Madonna Album Production Music Song Paradise (Not For Me) was the first collaboration between Madonna and Mirwais. The song was recorded in 1999 to be featured on Mirwais' album Production. It gave fans a first glance at the new style approach that Madonna was taking for her new album. Only later was decided that this song was in fact to be included on the Music album. For Madonna's album the track was slightly re-arranged; the instrumental part in the middle of the song is longer than the version on Mirwais' record. Tour On the Drowned World Tour, Paradise was used as an interlude so Madonna could go backstage for a costume change. However, she appeared on screen in a beautiful Manga-inspired video. Meanwhile four white cocoons were hanging on the ceiling. When they burst open they revealed four butt-naked (except for a string) dancers, hanging upside down. As the song continued, they slowly climbed into upward position and came down on stage. With the words 'There is a light' the dancers uncovered a reddish glow in their mouths. Madonna created a beautiful intimate moment on the Confessions Tour by adding Paradise to the setlist right after Drowned World. Yitzhak Sinwani joins her, introduced by Madonna as "my friend Isaac", adding a different comment about him on each show. They perform the song as a duet with Madonna playing the acoustic guitar and Isaac singing the originally French parts in Yiddish, while the screens show a beautiful tree with pink petals that are slowly falling down, making the humble rendition a special highlight of the show.
  17. Lyrics Papa I know you're going to be upset 'Cause I was always your little girl But you should know by now I'm not a baby You always taught me right from wrong I need your help, daddy please be strong I may be young at heart But I know what I'm saying The one you warned me all about The one you said I could do without We're in an awful mess And I don't mean maybe, please Papa don't preach I'm in trouble deep Papa don't preach I've been losing sleep But I made up my mind I'm keeping my baby I'm gonna keep my baby mmm He says that he's going to marry me We can raise a little family Maybe we'll be all right It's a sacrifice But my friends keep telling me to give it up Saying I'm too young, I ought to live it up What I need right now is some good advice, please Papa don't preach I'm in trouble deep Papa don't preach I've been losing sleep But I made up my mind I'm keeping my baby I'm gonna keep my baby, ooh oh Daddy, daddy if you could only see Just how good he's been treating me You'd give us your blessing right now 'Cause we are in love We are in love, so please Papa don't preach I'm in trouble deep Papa don't preach I've been losing sleep But I made up my mind I'm keeping my baby I'm gonna keep my baby, ooh oh Papa don't preach I'm in trouble deep Papa don't preach I've been losing sleep Papa don't preach I'm in trouble deep Papa don't preach I've been losing sleep (Papa don't preach) Oh (Papa don't preach) I'm gonna keep my baby ooh (Papa don't preach) Don't you stop loving me daddy (Papa don't preach) I know I'm keeping my baby Credits Written by Brian Elliot Additional lyrics by Madonna Produced by Madonna and Steve Bray Drums and keyboards by Steve Bray Rhythm guitar by David Williams Electric guitar by Bruce Gaitsch and John Putnam Acoustic guitar by John Putnam Additional keyboards by Fred Zarr Percussion by Johnathan Moffett String arrangement by Billy Meyers Background vocals by Madonna, Siedah Garrett and Edie Lehmann Album True Blue The Immaculate Collection Celebration Single This second single followed the example of predecessor Live To Tell and became a huge #1 hit in the US (Gold), UK, Canada and Australia. In Japan it reached #2. The song heated discussions about abortion. Anti-abortion organisations wanted Madonna to speak up against abortion, while women organisations and parents criticized Madonna for encouraging teenage pregnancy. Madonna said she just wanted the song to be "a celebration of life, not a national controversy". In 1986 the song received a Grammy nomination for Outstanding Pop Vocal Performance. Video The video, directed by James Foley, visualises the story of the song: a teenage girl gets pregnant and is terrified to tell her dad (played by actor Danny Aiello). Romantic images of Madonna (with short blond hair) and the boyfriend are combined with images of her dancing alone in the dark - as if she's crying in the dark for help. In the end she tells her father. He reacts angry but in the final shot he takes her into his arms. At the 1987 MTV VMA the video received a nomination for Best Cinematography and Best Overall Performance, and it won an award for Best Female Video. Tour On the Blond Ambition Tour, Papa Don't Preach closed off the church segment of the show. Wearing a black robe over her pointy bra, Madonna lipsynced most of the song while doing a choreography with six dancers. Three years earlier, she premiered the song on the Who's That Girl Tour, this time singing it live. She jumped around on stage, wearing a white dress and a black leather jacket. The screen in the background showed several historical images. Many years later, Papa Don't Preach returned on the Re-Invention Tour. Her shirt referred to the original video, except that it didn't always read "Italians Do It Better"; on most shows it was "Kabbalists Do It Better", while the UK shows had their own "Brits Do It Better" and "Irish Do It Better". Her Scottish kilt suited the song well, coz she was spinning around a lot, just like a schoolgirl. At the end, she danced in a circle with 4 other girls (in Arnhem with 2 girls and 2 boys). While the others twirl away, Madonna's left alone on stage and the music is haunting. She walks to the front of the stage and sings the first verse from American Life: "Do I have to change my name? Will it get me far? Should I lose some weight? Am I gonna be a star?"P

  19. Lyrics I turned around Too late To see the fallen star I fell asleep And never saw the sun go down I took your love for granted Thought luck was always on my side I turned around too late And you were gone So give me one more chance Darlin' if you care for me Let me win your love 'Cause you were always there for me If you care for me Be there for me I like to play the queen of hearts And never thought I'd lose I rolled the dice But never showed my hand I planned it out so perfectly So you'd never leave a girl like me I was a fool But now I understand So give me one more chance Darlin' if you care for me Let me win your love 'Cause you were always there for me If you care for me Be there for me Here is the law of the land You play with fire and you'll get burned Here is the lesson I've learned That you don't know what you've got til it's gone So give me one more chance Darlin' if you care for me Let me win your love 'Cause you were always there for me Gimme one more chance Tell me that it's not too late Let me win your love Darlin' please don't hesitate If you care for me Be there for me Give me One more chance Credits Written by Madonna and David Foster Produced and arranged by Madonna and David Foster Keyboards by David Foster Synclavier programming by Simon Franglen Acoustic guitars by Dean Parks Cello by Suzie Katayama Album Something To Remember Single While in the US the second single from Something To Remember was Love Don't Live Here Anymore, a few countries - UK, Japan and Australia - got one of the three new tracks as single in March 1996: One More Chance. Personally, this stunningly beautiful song, which has Madonna only accompanied by an acoustic guitar, is my favorite of the album. The limited single release didn't do much justice to the song, and it only reached #11 in the UK chart and #35 in Australia. Video There was no official video to support the single release of One More Chance, but some music channels showed a compilation of older videos.
  20. Lyrics (Watch out) I see you on the street and you walk on by You make me wanna hang my head down and cry If you gave me half a chance you'd see My desire burning inside of me But you choose to look the other way I've had to work much harder than this For something I want Don't try to resist me Open your heart to me, baby I hold the lock and you hold the key Open your heart to me, darlin' I'll give you love if you, you turn the key I think that you're afraid to look in my eyes Oh baby You look a little sad boy, I wonder why I follow you around but you can't see You're too wrapped up in yourself to notice So you choose to look the other way Well, I've got something to say Don't try to run I can keep up with you Nothing can stop me from trying You've got to Open your heart to me, baby I hold the lock and you hold the key Open your heart to me, darlin' I'll give you love if you, you turn the key Open your heart with the key One is such a lonely number Aah, aah, aah, aah Open your heart I'll make you love me It's not that hard If you just turn the key (watch out) Don't try to run I can keep up with you Nothing can stop me from trying You've got to Open your heart to me, baby I hold the lock and you hold the key Open your heart to me, darlin' I'll give you love if you, you turn the key Open your heart with the key Open your heart I'll make you love me (come on baby) It's not that hard If you just turn the key (I'm gonna get to you) Open your heart I'll make you love me (come on baby) It's not that hard If you just turn the key (watch out, watch out, watch out) Open your heart I'll make you love me (come on baby) It's not that hard If you just turn the key (watch out, watch out, watch out) Open your heart I'll make you love me (I'm gonna get to you) It's not that hard If you just turn the key (come on baby) Credits Written by Madonna, Gardner Cole and Peter Rafelson Produced by Madonna and Patrick Leonard Drums by Johnathan Moffett Percussion by Paulinho da Costa Guitar by David Williams Keyboards by Patrick Leonard Background vocals by Madonna Album True Blue The Immaculate Collection Celebration Single Originally this song was titled 'Follow Your Heart' and written for Cyndi Lauper. But Madonna used it instead, changing the lyrics and turning it into a dance song for the True Blue album. The fourth single of an album usually doesn't chart big, but this one did. It topped the charts in the US (her fifth #1) and in Japan, and got to #4 in the UK and Canada. It also topped the Hot Dance / Club Play in the US. Video For the video Madonna collaborated for the first time with photographer Jean-Baptiste Mondino, who would later also direct the fantastic videos for Justify My Love, Human Nature and Don't Tell Me. While the lyrics for Open Your Heart sound rather harmless, the video certainly wasn't. Dressed for the first time in one of Jean-Paul Gaultier's sexy corsets, Madonna plays an artist in a peep show. Outside, a little boy (Felix Howard) yearns to see his big idol. When Madonna comes out she's no longer the sexy vamp but rather a boyish friend. She kisses the boy awake and they dance away in the distance. While the scenes with the boy were completely innocent, some critics still moaned that Madonna was encouraging child abuse. At the 1987 MTV VMA the video was nominated for Best Female Video (won by Papa Don't Preach), Best Choreography, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography and Best Editing, but didn't win any of them. Tour The Who's That Girl Tour started off with the young dancer Chris Finch, imitating the little boy in the Open Your Heart video (Felix Howard hadn't received a working licence for the tour). Then the other 2 dancers are introduced, before Madonna herself appears on stage. She's wearing the same black pointy corset as in the video. She first sings the song alone, then Chris Finch joins her again and dance together. On the Blond Ambition Tour, Open Your Heart follows the opening number Express Yourself. This time there's not a young boy but a hunky dancer watching from a distance as his idol performs on a chair, dressed in another pointy corset. The song has not been performed in its entirety since, but due to its theme similar to Frozen ('you hold the key'), it was used as a sample in that song on both Drowned World Tour and Sticky & Sweet Tour.
  21. Lyrics It's funny that way You can get used To the tears and the pain What a child will believe You never loved me You can't hurt me now I got away from you I never thought I would You can't make me cry You once had the power I never felt so good about myself Seems like yesterday I lay down next to your boots and I prayed For your anger to end Oh Father I have sinned You can't hurt me now I got away from you I never thought I would You can't make me cry You once had the power I never felt so good about myself Oh Father You never wanted to live that way You never wanted to hurt me Why am I running away Oh Father You never wanted to live that way You never wanted to hurt me Why am I running away Maybe someday When I look back I'll be able to say You didn't mean to be cruel Somebody hurt you too You can't hurt me now I got away from you I never thought I would You can't make me cry You once had the power I never felt so good You can't hurt me now I got away from you I never thought I would You can't make me cry You once had the power I never felt so good about myself Credits Written by Madonna and Patrick Leonard Produced by Madonna and Patrick Leonard Album Like A Prayer Something To Remember Single After the joyful Cherish, Madonna released this serious, rather dramatic fourth single in October 1989. Madonna describes her difficult love-hate relationship with her father during her youth. Maybe this material was a bit too hard or sad for the Americans, who only allowed it to #20 in the charts. It wasn't very welcome in Japan (#12) or Australia (#51) either. Six years later, in December 1995 the song was released in Europe for the first time, as part of the Something To Remember collection. But even then, the UK didn't seem ready for this great ballad; it stalled at #16. Video David Fincher directed a very strong dramatic video that matched the song perfectly. Shot completely in black & white, the video shows images of Madonna as a little girl with her angry father yelling at her. It also shows the funeral of the girl's mother, explicitly referring to the death of Madonna's mother. As the girl is dancing on her mother's grave, in a beautiful snowy landscape, a grown-up Madonna watches her. The video was so explicit that MTV restricted it for being too disturbing. Tour During the church segment on the Blond Ambition Tour Madonna performed a medley of Live To Tell and Oh Father. It was one of her best vocal performances of the show. One of the dancers walked around with an urn of incence, then danced with her.
  22. Lyrics When I was very young Nothing really mattered to me But making myself happy I was the only one Now that I am grown Everything's changed I'll never be the same Because of you Nothing really matters Love is all we need Everything I give you All comes back to me Looking at my life It's very clear to me I lived so selfishly I was the only one I realize That nobody wins Something is ending And something begins Nothing really matters Love is all we need Everything I give you All comes back to Nothing really matters Love is all we need Everything I give you All comes back to me Nothing takes the past away Like the future Nothing makes the darkness go Like the light You're shelter from the storm Give me comfort in your arms Nothing really matters Love is all we need Everything I give you All comes back to me Nothing really matters Love is all we need Everything I give you All comes back to me Nothing really matters Love is all we need Credits Written by Madonna and Patrick Leonard Produced by Madonna, William Orbit and Marius De Vries Background vocals by Donna DeLory and Niki Haris Additional drum programming by Steve Sidelnyk Album Ray Of Light Single The fifth and last single of the album was Nothing Really Matters. This dance song describes how the birth of Lola makes all the rest in Madonna's life less important. Released in the spring of 1999, a full year after the album came out, the single didn't chart too well. In the US it didn't go higher than #93, making it her lowest chart position on the Hot 100 ever. The highest position in the UK and Canada was respectively #7 and #6. Madonna opened the 1999 Grammy Awards with this single in a set reminiscent of the video. Later that night, she went on to win four trophies. Video This video, directed by Johan Renck, must be the most mysterious video since Bedtime Story. Madonna plays a Geisha - inspired by Arthur C. Golden's book 'Memoirs of a Geisha' - in a red kimono and a black Cleopatra-wig. The other creatures in the video seem to be her followers. First they all treasure false forms of love, represented by the bags of water. But that's not what really matters. Slowly they get the insight, symbolized with the people rising in the air. Madonna herself is walking and dancing through a long corridor. She has left the typical Ray Of Light-dance moves and now does a mystical Geisha-choreography. Tour On the Drowned World Tour there was an entire Geisha-part which resembled a lot the style used in the Nothing Really Matters-video. Strangely, Nothing Really Matters itself wasn't included as a song.
  23. Lyrics I'm in love with you You silly thing Anyone can see What is it with you You silly thing Just take it from me It was not a chance meeting Feel my heart beating You're the one You could take all this Take it away I'd still have it all Cause I've climbed the tree of life And that is why I'm no longer scared if I fall When I get lost in space I can return to this place Cause you're the one Nothing fails, no more fears Nothing fails, you washed away my tears Nothing fails, no more fears Nothing fails, nothing fails I'm not religious But I feel so moved Makes me want to pray Pray you'll always be here I'm not religious But I feel such love Makes me want to pray When I get lost in space I can return to this place Cause you're the one I'm not religious But I feel so moved I'm not religious Makes me wanna pray I'm not religious (I'm not religious) But I feel so moved (But I feel so moved) Makes me wanna pray Pray you'll always be here I'm not religious (I'm not religious) But I feel such love Makes me wanna pray I'm not religious (I'm not religious) But I feel so moved (But it makes me wanna pray) I'm not religious (I'm not religious) Makes me wanna pray (Makes me wanna pray) I'm not religious But I feel so moved (Makes me wanna pray) I'm not religious Makes me wanna pray (Makes me wanna) Nothing fails, no more fears Nothing fails, you washed away my tears Nothing fails, no more fears Nothing fails Credits Written by Madonna, Guy Sigsworth and Jem Griffiths Produced by Madonna, Mirwais Ahmadzaï and Mark -Spike- Stent String arrangements by Michel Colombier Programming and guitars by Mirwais Ahmadzaï Piano by Stuart Price Vocals by the London Community Gospel Choir, arranged by Nicki Brown Album .American Life Single This beautiful ballad has easily become everyone's favorite album track. It was released in December 2003 on several formats. Some countries received a Nothing Fails single, while others got a Nothing Fails/Love Profusion single. The Nothing Fails maxi-single doesn't feature Love Profusion, but some bonus remixes of Nobody Knows Me. Nothing Fails didn't chart in the Billboard Hot 100, though it peaked at #1 of the Sales chart as well as on the Hot Dance / Club Play. Remixes of the song were made by Peter Rauhofer, Jason Nevins, Tracy Young and Jackie Christie. Video Early rumours suggested that Madonna was going to shoot a religious video for Nothing Fails in Israel. This was soon denied by her spokesperson. Months later, her manager Caresse Henry even announced that WBR had no intention to shoot a video to support this single. Instead they released a video for Love Profusion, which was released in conjunction with Nothing Fails. Tour Madonna opened the fourth part of her Re-Invention show with an acoustic version of Nothing Fails. Dressed in a beautiful black suit and matching hat by Stella McCartney, she was seated on the left of the stage with her acoustic guitar. During her performance, the big screens - which had closed during Bedtime Story - opened again, uncovering the large background screen which displayed the choir.
  24. Lyrics I've had so many lives Since I was a child And I realised How many times I've died I'm not that kind of guy Sometimes I feel shy I think I can fly Closer to the sky No one's telling you how to live your life But it's a setup until you're fed up This world is not so kind People trap your mind It's so hard to find Someone to admire I sleep much better at night I feel closer to the light Now I'm gonna try To improve my life No one's telling you how to live your life But it's a setup until you're fed up It's no good when you're misunderstood But why should I care What the world thinks of me Won't let a stranger Give me a social disease Nobody, nobody knows me Nobody knows me Nobody knows me Like you know me Nobody knows me Nobody knows me Nobody knows me Like you know me No one's telling me how to live my life But it's a setup, and I'm just fed up It's no good when you're misunderstood But why should I care What the world thinks of me Won't let a stranger Give me a social disease I don't want no lies I don't watch TV I don't waste my time Won't read a magazine I don't want no lies I don't watch TV I don't waste my time Won't read a magazine I sleep much better at night I feel closer to the light Now I'm gonna try To improve my life Nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody knows me Nobody knows me Nobody knows me Like you know me Nobody knows me (It's no fun but the damage is done) Nobody knows me Nobody knows me (Don't want your social disease) Like, like you know me Like you know me Like you know me Like you know me (Don't want your social disease) Like you know me Nobody knows me (I don't want no lies) Nobody knows me (I don't watch TV) Nobody knows me (I don't waste my time) Like you know me (Won't read a magazine) Nobody knows me (I don't want no lies) Nobody knows me (I don't watch TV) Nobody knows me (I don't waste my time) Like you know me (Won't read a magazine) (Don't want your social disease) Credits Written by Madonna and Mirwais Ahmadzaï Produced by Madonna and Mirwais Ahmadzaï Programming by Mirwais Ahmadzaï Album .American Life Song Nobody Knows Me is the experimental dance track on the album. Even without a single release, it was obvious that it would get many remixes. It was mixed by Above & Beyond, Mount Sims and Peter Rauhofer. Three of them featured as a bonus on the Nothing Fails maxi-single and one on the EP Remixed & Revisited. The Nobody Knows Me remixes stormed up the Hot Dance / Club Play chart, peaking at #4. Tour Nobody Knows Me followed after the Re-Invention Tour opener Vogue, in a dance version that excelled the album version. Alone on stage, Madonna danced while walking on a conveyor belt. One moment she was hanging down an uplifted stage towards the crowd, the other she was laying down on the conveyor belt, fighting the stream, trying "to improve my life". The choreography was so catchy and in a way it reminded me of the Impressive Instant performance on the Drowned World Tour.

Lyrics There was a time, I was happy in my life There was a time, I believed I'd live forever There was a time, that I prayed to Jesus Christ There was a time, I had a mother It was nice Nobody else would ever take the place of you Nobody else could do the things that you could do No one else I guess could hurt me like you did I didn't understand, I was just a kid Oh mother, why aren't you here with me No one else saw the things that you could see I'm trying hard to dry my tears Yes father, you know I'm not so free I got to give it up Find someone to love me I got to let it go Find someone that I can care for I got to give it up Find someone to love me I got to let it go Find someone that I can care for There was a time, I was happy in my life There was a time, I believed I'd live forever There was a time, that I prayed to Jesus Christ There was a time, I had a mother It was nice Oh mother, why aren't you here with me No one else saw the things that you could see I'm trying hard to dry my tears Yes father, you know I'm not so free I got to give it up Find someone to love me I got to let it go Find someone that I can care for I got to give it up Find someone to love me I got to let it go Find someone that I can care for My mother died when I was five And all I did was sit and cry I cried and cried and cried all day Until the neighbors went away They couldn't take my loneliness (I gotta give it up) I couldn't take their phoniness (I gotta give it up) My father had to go to work (I gotta give it up) I used to think he was a jerk (I gotta give it up) I didn't know his heart was broken Not another word was spoken He became a shadow of The father I was dreaming of I made a vow that I would never need Another person ever Turned my heart into a cage A victim of a kind of rage I gotta give it up I gotta give it up I gotta give it up I gotta give it up I got to give it up Find someone to love me I got to let it go Find someone that I can care for I got to give it up Find someone to love me I got to let it go Find someone that I can care for Find someone that I can care for Find someone that I can care for I gotta give it up I gotta give it up I gotta give it up I gotta give it up I gotta give it up I gotta give it up I gotta let it go I gotta give it up Oh mother, oh father I gotta give it up I gotta give it up I gotta give it up I gotta give it up I gotta give it up I gotta give it up I gotta give it up I gotta give it up I gotta give it up Credits Written by Madonna and Mirwais Ahmadzaï Produced by Madonna and Mirwais Ahmadzaï Programming and guitars by Mirwais Ahmadzaï Album .American Life Song On April 14th 2003, this beautiful song premiered online on the website of MSN. Like she did before in Promise To Try, Inside Of Me and Mer Girl, Madonna sings about her mothers death. But though the lyrics are sad and emotional, it's an uptempo dance song. Madonna's voice is high pitched as if it's a little girl singing about her mum and dad. Madonna comments on this song: "It's a way to free me from the pain for my mother's death, but i'm not asking for a medal for finding my way in life or for compassing for suffering so much. It isn't an excuse like 'I'm like this because i've suffered so much when I was a child.' These excuses are rubbish, because you have to be responsible of all the things you do in your whole life." The song was remixed by Johnny Rocks and Peter Rauhofer but didn't get a commercial single release. However the Rauhofer mix went up to #9 on the Billboard Hot Dance / Club Play chart in June 2005, making it the 7th top 10 hit from the American Life album on that chart. Tour While the lyrics are clearly about her mother, Madonna performed this song on the Re-Invention Tour as a homage to both her mother and Jesus. Jesus appears on the big side screens, while the center screen shows a big red pounding heart. Madonna herself sits in the middle of the stage, playing the acoustic guitar. Right before she starts the rap, the beat kicks in, making the crowd go wild. A picture of her mother flashes on the screens while she finishes her rap. Then there's a bridge to the first verse of Intervention, followed by again the Mother And Father chorus.
