    Lyrics
    Sing, my sister, sing
    Let your voice be heard
What won't kill you will make you strong
    Sing, my sister, sing

    Sing, my sister, sing
    Let your voice be heard
What won't kill you will make you strong
    Sing, my sister, sing

You don't need to disrespect yourself again
Don't hide your light behind your fear
    Now women can be strong
    You've known it all along
What you need is what you haven't found
    So...

    Sing, my sister, sing
    Let your voice be heard
What won't kill you will make you strong
    Sing, my sister, sing

Women are the mothers of the world, my friend
I tell you womankind is strong
Take your beautiful self up to the heights again
    (Ooh)
Back to the place where you belong
    So...

    Sing, my sister, sing
    Let your voice be heard
What won't kill you will make you strong
    Sing, my sister, sing

    Sing, my sister, sing
    Let your voice be heard
What won't kill you will make you strong
    Sing, my sister, sing

    Sing out
    Sing loud
    Sing proud

    Sing, my sister, sing
    Let your voice be heard

    Sing, my sister, sing
    Let your voice be heard

    Sing, my sister, sing
    Let your voice be heard

    Let your voice be heard

    Work (8x)

Yo te quiero means I love you
Mucho gusto means I'm welcome to you
Señorita, I just wanna fall in love
    Callate means close your mouth
    Besame means give me love
Señorita, she just wants to fall in love

Baby hurry up 'cause I cannot get enough
If you like my style I can love you for a while
Can you hear me call your name
    Baby I'm onto your game

    Digame means tell me baby
Yo soy loco means you drive me crazy
Señorita, I just wanna fall in love
    Entiendo means I get it
Siempre means that I won't forget it
Señorita, she just wants to fall in love

     Hard Candy
    Tour
With a "Habla Español?", Madonna starts her Spanish Lesson to the crowd. This lighthearted song was performed during the Gypsy segment of the Sticky & Sweet Tour. Dressed in a gorgeous black dress with colourful ribbons, designed by Givenchy, Madonna bumps and grinds her dancers who are all dressed up like monks. The screens show the silhouette of dancer Stella Angelova with the Spanish words flashing in whenever Madonna sings them. The end of the song turns Flamenco-style when a dancer does a solo with everyone else clapping, before smoothly flowing into Miles Away.

    Lyrics
    I'm talking, I'm talking
I believe in the power of love
    I'm singing, I'm singing
I believe that you can rescue me

With you I'm not a little girl
With you I'm not a man
When all the hurt inside of me comes out
    You understand
    You see that I'm ferocious
You see that I am weak
You see that I am silly
    And pretentious and a freak

But I don't feel too strange for you
Don't know exactly what you do
I think when love is pure you try
    To understand the reasons why
    And I prefer this mystery
    It cancels out my misery
And gives me hope that there could be
    A person that loves me

    Rescue me (Rescue me)
    It's hard to believe
Your love has given me hope
    Rescue me (Rescue me)
    It's hard to believe
I'm drowning, baby throw out your rope

With you I'm not a fascist
Can't play you like a toy
And when I need to dominate
    You're not my little boy
You see that I am hungry
    For a life of understanding
And you forgive my angry little heart
    When she's demanding
You bring me to my knees
While I'm scratching out the eyes
Of a world I want to conquer
    And deliver, and despise
And right while I am kneeling there
    I suddenly begin to care
And understand that there could be
    A person that loves me

    Rescue me (Rescue me)
    It's hard to believe
Your love has given me hope
    Rescue me (Rescue me)
    It's hard to believe
I'm drowning, baby throw out your rope

    Love is understanding
    It's hard to believe
    Life can be so demanding
    I'm sending out an S.O.S.
    Stop me from drowning
    Baby I'll do the rest

    Rescue me (Rescue me)
Your love has given me hope
(Your love has given me hope)
    Rescue me (Rescue me)
    I'm drowning
    Baby throw out your rope
    (Baby throw out your rope)

    Rescue me (Rescue me)
Your love has given me hope
(Your love has given me hope)
    Rescue me (Rescue me)
    I'm drowning
    Baby throw out your rope
    (Baby throw out your rope)

Ooh ahh, ooh ahh, love is understanding
Ooh ahh, ooh ahh, love is understanding

    Love is understanding
    It's hard to believe
    Life can be so demanding
    I'm sending out an S.O.S.
    Rescue me, rescue me

It's not my business to decide
How good you are for me
    How valuable you are
And what the world can see
Only that you try to understand me
And have the courage to love me for me

    I believe
    (I believe in the power)
I believe that you can rescue me
(I believe that you can rescue me)

    I believe
    (I believe in the power)
I believe that you can rescue me
(I believe that you can rescue me)

    I'm singing I believe
    (I believe in the power)
I believe that you can rescue me
(I believe that you can rescue me)
    I'm singing, I'm singing, I'm singing
    (I believe in the power)
I believe that you can rescue me
(I believe that you can rescue me)

    I'm talking, I'm talking
    (I believe in the power)
I believe in the power of love
(I believe that you can rescue me)

    I'm talking, I'm talking
    (I believe in the power)
I believe in the power of love
(I believe that you can rescue me)

    I'm singing, I'm singing, I believe
    (I believe in the power)
I believe that you can rescue me
(I believe that you can rescue me)

    Hey hey, hey hey
    (I believe in the power)
    R.E.S.C.U.E. me
(I believe you can rescue me)
    Only you can rescue me
    Hey hey, hey...
    (I believe in the power)
(I believe you can rescue me)
    (I believe in the power)

     The Immaculate Collection
    Single
Both of the new tracks on The Immaculate Collection were released as singles. After the success of Justify My Love, Rescue Me was released in February 1991 (US) - April 1991 (Europe). This song, which shows how powerful Madonna's voice really is, is my personal favorite. Though often over-looked, it was a top 10 hit, reaching #9 in the US (Gold), #3 in the UK and #4 in Canada. In Japan and Australia it was good for respectively #11 and #15. On the Hot Dance / Club Play it peaked at #5.

    Video
After finishing her Blond Ambition Tour and releasing Justify My Love (with all the commotion surrounding the controversial video), Madonna was busy with movie projects and other stuff, so she lacked the time to make a video to support Rescue Me. Since Rescue Me was never performed live, there couldn't be a live performance video either, so it became one of the few Madonna singles without a video. However, some music channels showed a video compiled of different live performances.

    Lyrics
You lost your reputation on a woman
You didn't understand or care to know
You get your education from your lovers
But now there's just no place for you to go

    It doesn't pay
    To be a runaway lover
    It doesn't pay
To give away what you lack
You'll never get your money back

You're set adrift with no direction
Just like a ship that's lost at sea
You don't care where you drop your anchor
Make sure it doesn't land on me

    It doesn't pay
    To be a runaway lover
    It doesn't pay
To give away what you lack
You'll never get your money back

    It doesn't pay
    To be a runaway lover
    It doesn't pay
To give away what you lack
You'll never get your money back
    (It doesn't pay, doesn't pay, doesn't pay,...)

    Walking around on a cloud
'Cause every girl you meet just trips on you
    Saying your name out loud
I guess you met your match
    Now what will you do

    Uh uh, no way

    It doesn't pay
    To be a runaway lover
    It doesn't pay
To give away what you lack
You'll never get your money back

    It doesn't pay
    To be a runaway lover
    It doesn't pay
To give away what you lack
You'll never get your money back

    Walking around on a cloud
'Cause every girl you meet just trips on you
    Saying your name out loud
I guess you met your match
    Now what will you do

    It doesn't pay
    It doesn't pay
    It doesn't pay
    To give your heart away
    To a runaway lover

    Uh uh, no way
    Uh uh, no way
    Uh uh, no way

    Song
This song moves away from the deep, spiritual lyrics that were remarkable for Ray Of Light, but instead opts for a heavy dancefloor track. Madonna performed it during her gigs at the Roseland Ballroom and the Brixton Academy in November 2000, but nixed the song from her Drowned World Tour.

    Lyrics
Surely whoever speaks to me in the right voice
Him or her I shall follow

    Who needs the sun
When the rain's so full of life
    Who needs the sky
    It's here in your arms
    I want to be buried
    You are
    My sanctuary

    Who needs the sun
When the rain's so full of life
    Who needs the sky
    When the ground's open wide
    It's here in your arms
    I want to be buried
    You are
    My sanctuary

    Who needs a smile
When a tear's so full of love
    Who needs a home
    With the stars up above
    It's here in your heart
    I want to be carried
    You are
    My sanctuary

    Who needs the light
With the darkness in your eyes
    Who needs to sleep
With the stars in the sky
    It's here in your soul
    I want to be married
    You are
    My sanctuary

And the earth was void and empty
And darkness was upon the face of the earth

Is all of this pain so necessary
    You
    Are
    My sanctuary

Surely whoever speaks to me in the right voice
Him or her I shall follow
As the water follows the moon
    Silently
    (Who needs the sun)
    With fluid steps
    (Who needs the sky)
    Around the globe
    ( Who needs to sleep)
    I hear your voice
    You are (you are)
    My sanctuary
    You are (you are)
    You are (you are)
    My sanctuary

    Lyrics
There again I've more to do
Than simply get the message through
    I haven't started!
Let's get this show on the road
    Let's make it obvious
    Peron is off and rolling

    Eyes! Hair! Mouth! Figure!
    Dress! Voice! Style! Movement!
    Hands! Magic! Rings! Glamour!
    Face! Diamonds! Excitement! Image!

    I came from the people
    They need to adore me
    So Christian Dior me
From my head to my toes
    I need to be dazzling
I want to be Rainbow High!
    They must have excitement
    And so must I

    Eyes! Hair! Mouth! Figure!
    Dress! Voice! Style! Movement!

    I'm their product
    It's vital you sell me
    So Machiavell-me
    Make an Argentine Rose!
    I need to be thrilling
I want to be Rainbow High!
    They need their escape
    And so do I

    Eyes! Hair! Mouth! Figure!
    Dress! Voice! Style! Movement!
    Hands! Magic! Rings! Glamour!
    Face! Diamonds! Excitement! Image!

All my descamisados expect me to outshine the enemy
    I won't disappoint them!

    I'm their savior!
    That's what they call me
    So Lauren Bacall me
    Anything goes
    To make me fantastic
I have to be Rainbow High
    In magical colors

You're not decorating a girl for a night on the town!
And I'm not a second-rate queen getting kicks with a crown!
    Next stop will be Europe!
    The Rainbow's gonna tour
    Dressed up, somewhere to go
    We'll put on a show!
    Look out, mighty Europe!
Because you oughta know whatcha gonna get in me
    Just a little touch of
    Just a little touch of
    Argentina's brand of Star quality!

    Lyrics
You can call me a sinner
And you can call me a saint
Celebrate me for who I am
Dislike me for what I ain't

Put me up on a pedestal
Or drag me down in the dirt
Sticks and stones will break my bones
But your names will never hurt

I'll be the garden, you'll be the snake
All of my fruit is yours to take
Better the devil that you know
Your love for me will grow
    Because

    This is who I am
You can like it or not
You can love me or leave me
Cause I'm never gonna stop, no no

    Cleopatra had her way
    Mata Hari too
Whether they were good or bad
    Is strictly up to you

    Life is a paradox
And it doesn't make much sense
Can't have femme without the fatale
    Please don't take offense

Don't let the fruit rot under the vine
Fill up your cup and let's drink the wine
Better the devil that you know
Your love for me will grow
    Because

    This is who I am
You can like it or not
You can love me or leave me
Cause I'm never gonna stop, no no, you know
    This is who I am
You can like it or not
You can love me or leave me
Cause I'm never gonna stop, no no, you know

    No no, you know
    No no, you know
    No no, you know
    No no, you know

I'll be the garden, you'll be the snake
All of my fruit is yours to take
Better the devil that you know
Your love for me will grow

     Confessions On A Dance Floor
    Tour
Stuart Price on this song "It's the perfect way to end the album. It basically says "This is who I am, this is what I do. Take it or leave it." On the Confessions Tour, Madonna found it the perfect way to end the Bedouin part of the show. The performance is kept very basic, with a sexy Madonna alone on stage, singing and dancing in cabaret-style with a chair as her only attribute, and concentrated on her strong vocals. The screen behind her shows a big green snake, clearly referring to the lyrics. At the end, Madonna disappears from the stage, as a red rose grows from the green plants on the screen.

    Lyrics
    (intro:)
    Girls can wear jeans
    And cut their hear short
    Wear shirts and boots
Cause it's okay to be a boy

But for a boy to look like a girl is degrading
Because you think being a girl is degrading
    But secretly
You'd love to know what it's like
    Wouldn't you?
What it feels like for a girl

    Deliciosa
    Labio suave y rosa... Baby

    Quieres ver
    Quieres ver
Quieres ver lo que siente la mujer
    Y tratar de comprender

    Song
This is the spanish version of What It Feels Like For A Girl, which appeared on one of the maxi-singles. Spanish fans were not very enthousiastic about it, as the Spanish translation seems to be rather poor. Check out Miss Boogie Woogie to see a literal English translation of the Spanish lyrics. Spanish web mistress Emma also made a much better version, called Como Se Siente Una Chica.
    Tour
On the Drowned World Tour, she only sang the Spanish version of What It Feels Like For A Girl, because it fit in better with the Spanish-Latin part of the show. Wearing a beautiful black Gaultier-dress, she was sitting on a spinning stage. Then she stepped down and started dancing with each of the female dancers. Following the theme of the song, no men were on stage.

    Lyrics
    There are too many questions
    There is not one solution
    There is no resurrection
    There is so much confusion
    And the love profusion
    You make me feel
    You make me know
    And the love vibration
    You make me feel
    You make it shine

    There are too many options
    There is no consolation
    I have lost my illusions
What I want is an explanation

    And the love profusion
    You make me feel
    You make me know
    And the love direction
    You make me feel
    You make me shine
    You make me feel
    You make me shine
    You make me feel

I got you under my skin
I got you under my skin
I got you under my skin
I got you under my skin

    There is no comprehension
    There is real isolation
    There is so much destruction
What I want is a celebration

And I know I can feel bad
When I get in a bad mood
And the world can look so sad
Only you make me feel good

I got you under my skin
I got you under my skin
I got you under my skin
I got you under my skin

I got you under my skin
I got you under my skin
I got you under my skin
I got you under my skin

    And the love profusion
    You make me feel
    You make me know
    And the love intention
    You make me feel
    You make me shine
    You make me feel
    You make me shine
    You make me feel

I got you under my skin
I got you under my skin
I got you under my skin
I got you under my skin

I got you under my skin
I got you under my skin
I got you under my skin
I got you under my skin

And I know I can feel bad
When I get in a bad mood
And the world can look so sad
Only you make me feel good

    Single
On April 14th, 2003, this song premiered online on the website of AOL. Later that year, the song was used in a commercial for Estée Lauder's Beyond Paradise fragrance. In December 2003 it was released together with Nothing Fails. With both songs appearing on every format, they were considered as a double A-side single in some territories, while charting separately in other places (like UK and Australia). In the US and France, the Love Profusion single was released on March 16th, 2004, using the cover on the left. The same month it already peaked at #1 of the Billboard Hot Dance / Club Play chart. Remixes were made by Blow-Up, The Passengerz, Ralphi Rosario, Craig J. and Ray Caroll.

    Video
Though Nothing Fails was pushed forward as radio single in most territories, it was only Love profusion that got a video. After shooting the Estée Lauder commercial, French director Luc Besson also shot this video in one day in October, using the same concept and visual effects as the commercial. It's a performance video, in which Madonna, in a simple flower dress, walks through two different dimensions: a dark city in stormy weather and a colorful dreamworld with flowers and dancing fairies. "There are a lot of special effects," Madonna said of the clip. "I talked to things that weren't there - which is what you do when you're doing green-screen or blue-screen stuff. There's going to be a lot of fairies dancing around me. "Isn't that exciting?" she added, laughing. "I always have a lot of fairies dancing around me."

    Tour
Surprisingly, Love Profusion wasn't played on the Re-Invention Tour, even though it was Madonna's most recent single. According to rumours she did rehearse the song but cut it out of the final setlist.

    Lyrics
You must be my lucky star
'Cause you shine on me wherever you are
I just think of you and I start to glow
    And I need your light
    And baby you know

    Starlight starbright
    First star I see tonight
    Starlight starbright
    Make everything all right
    Starlight starbright
    First star I see tonight
    Starlight starbright
    Yeah

You must be my lucky star
'Cause you make the darkness seem so far
And when I'm lost you'll be my guide
I just turn around and you're by my side

    Starlight starbright
    First star I see tonight
    Starlight starbright
    Make everything all right
    Starlight starbright
    First star I see tonight
    Starlight starbright
    Yeah

Come on, shine your heavenly body tonight
'Cause I know you're gonna make everything all right
Hmm come on, shine your heavenly body tonight
'Cause I know you're gonna make everything all right

You may be my lucky star
But I'm the luckiest by far
You may be my lucky star
But I'm the luckiest by far

    Starlight starbright
    First star I see tonight
    Starlight starbright
    Make everything all right
    Starlight starbright
    First star I see tonight
    Starlight starbright
    Yeah

Come on, shine your heavenly body tonight
'Cause I know you're gonna make everything all right
Hmm come on, shine your heavenly body tonight
'Cause I know you're gonna make everything all right

(You may be my lucky star)
(But I'm the luckiest by far)
You may be my lucky star
What you do to me baby
(You may be my lucky star)

      Single
The first song Madonna wrote as a signed artist was Lucky Star, a simple but catchy love song. Released in 1984, it charted at #4 in the US and #14 in the UK (one of the very few Madonna singles that peaked outside of the UK Top 10). It became the first out of 16 consecutive Top 5 hits on Billboard, a feat that surpassed the Beatles' record. Because of that huge success, the release of Madonna's second album had to be pushed back to the end of 1984.
    Video
A video was made for the '84 release, directed by Arthur Pierson. It basically showed Madonna dancing around all the time in front of a white background, exploiting her Boy Toy image to the top: a wild haircut, dressed in black punky clothes, that she would later describe as 'rags'.
    Tour
Lucky Star got its premiere on the Virgin Tour, where Madonna performed it in her black outfit (with a cross on her chest) similar to the video choreography.
Lucky Star was also performed on the Who's That Girl Tour, right after the opening number Open Your Heart. The twinkling keyboard sound and the turning disco ball make all the stars shine around Madonna. But with some extra uptempo beats she knows to turn this love song into a dancy performance.
Almost two decades later, Lucky Star was performed live again, on the Confessions Tour. After the exhausting La Isla Bonita, Madonna crashes down on stage, but backup singers Nicki & Donna bring her back on her feet, covering her with a magical cape, which reads "Dancing Queen" on the back (another Abba reference, while the rest of her outfit is a combination of Agnetha's & Frida's from their late 70s tour). As Madonna opens the cape, the inside shows twinkling disco balls (lucky stars?). Madonna performs a great version of Lucky Star, sung over the instrumental of Hung Up, together with Donna and Nicki (the only time the backup singers get their part in the spotlight). At the end of the song, Madonna asks the audience if they want more and sings the chorus of Hung Up, then goes offstage for her final costume change, building up the anticipation for the encore.

    Lyrics
Should have left you standing right where you stood
    Should have let you go
Should have had the sense to know
    Like a train you'd come
    And I'd lose my place
    Now I'm on this trip
I took a fall from grace

    Nowhere to run
    Nowhere to hide
    From the look of love
    From the eyes of pride
    Nowhere to go
    No place to run
    From the look of love
    Now I've come undone

I've had a map laid out
From the day I was born
    But the roads are blocked
    And the paper is worn
And all the books I've read
    And the things I know
    Never taught me to laugh
    Never taught to let go

    Nowhere to run
    Nowhere to hide
    From the look of love
    From the eyes of pride
    Nowhere to go
    No place to run
    From the look of love
    Now I've come undone

My conscience is clear, I know right from wrong
That's a lie, I know nothing except that you're gone
But there's more to learn from the look in your eyes
That trip round this world, the stars in the sky

Now all the books I've read
    And the things I know
    Never taught me to live
Never taught me to let go

    Nowhere to run
    Nowhere to hide
    From the look of love
    From the eyes of pride
    Nowhere to go
    No place to run
    From the look of love
    Now I've come undone

    Nowhere to run
    Nowhere to hide
    From the look of love
    Lord knows I've tried
    Nowhere to go
    No place to run
    From the look of love
    Now I've come undone

     Who's That Girl (OST)
    Single
This lovely ballad was only released late 1987 in Europe and Japan. In the UK it didn't get higher than #9 and in Japan it stalled at #20.
    Video
There was no official video to support the single release of The Look Of Love.
    Tour
This song brought a great intimate moment to the Who's That Girl Tour. Madonna is all alone in the spotlight. As she's walking around on stage, she seems completely lost, like Niki when she strolls alone through the city (in the movie). At the end she's struggling against the conveyor belt that in the end takes her along.

Sky fits heaven so fly it That's what the prophet said to me
Child fits mother so hold your baby tight
That's what my future could see

Fate fits karma so use it
That's what the wise man said to me
Love fits virtue so hold on to the light
That's what our future will be

    Traveling down this road
Watching the signs as I go
I think I'll follow the sun
    Isn't everyone just

    Traveling down their own road
Watching the signs as they go
I think I'll follow my heart
It's a very good place to start

    Traveling down my own road
Watching the signs as I go

And I'm watching the signs as I go
    Traveling traveling
Watching the signs as I go

That's what the Gospel said to me
Life fits living so let your judgments go
That's how our future should be

Sky Fits Heaven contains some lines from a poem by Max Blagg. The original poem reads: "Sky fits heaven, so ride it. Child fits mother, so hold your baby tight. Lips fit mouth, so kiss them". Blagg recited this poem for a 1993 Gap commercial, 10 years before Madonna did her own Gap ad. It was rumoured that Madonna paid Blagg for using the lines without having to credit him in the album's liner notes.

    Song
This catchy dance-trance song wasn't released as a single, but was a favorite among remixers. Two remixes featured as B-singles for Drowned World/Substitute For Love (UK and Japan).Tour
No doubt one of the highlights of the Drowned World Tour was the performance of Sky Fits Heaven. During Mer Girl all of a sudden the beat kicks in and Madonna jumps from the jungle-like decor. Attached to a cord she flies through the sky, kicking the 'evil spirit' dancers in a true kungfu-style. Inspiration for this scene was the movie 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon'.

    Lyrics
Do I know you from somewhere
Why do you leave me wanting more
Why do all the things I say
Sound like the stupid things I've said before

Put your hand on my skin
Put your hand on my skin
Put your hand on my skin

    Kiss me, I'm dying
Put your hand on my skin
    I close my eyes
I need to make a connection
I'm walking on a thin line
    I close my eyes
    I close my eyes

Do I know you from somewhere
Why do you leave me wanting more
Why do all the things I say
Sound like the stupid things I've said before

    (Kiss, kiss, kiss, kiss me)

    Touch me, I'm trying
To see inside of your soul
    I've got this thing
I want to make a connection
I'm not like this all the time
    You've got this thing
    You've got this thing

Do I know you from somewhere
Why do you leave me wanting more
Why do all the things I say
Sound like the stupid things I've said before

    Kiss me, I'm dying
Put your hand on my skin
    I close my eyes
I need to have your protection
    I close my eyes
    I close your eyes

    (Kiss, kiss, kiss, kiss me)

Do I know you from somewhere
Why do you leave me wanting more
Why do all the things I say
Sound like the stupid things I've said before

Do I know you from somewhere

Why do all the things I say

I'm not like this all the time

     Ray Of Light
    Song
With Skin Madonna's music evolves more into tribal dance-trance and techno, a new sound she tries for the first time and which is best illustrated with her nickname during the making of the Ray Of Light album: Veronica Electronica...
The original title for this song was 'Flirtation Dance'. In a MTV documentary with Kurt Loder we see Madonna scratching that title and replacing it by 'Skin'. When Kurt asks her what the original title was, she just answers 'never mind!'.
Skin was first rumoured to become the final single for the Ray Of Light album, but these plans got cancelled, probably because of insufficient time between the releases of Nothing Really Matters and Beautiful Stranger.

    Lyrics
    What can you lose?
    Only the blues
Why keep concealing everything you're feeling?
Say it to her, what can you lose?
    Maybe it shows
She's had clues, which she chose to ignore
    Maybe though she knows
And just wants to go on as before
    As a friend, nothing more
    So she closes the door

    Well, if she does
    Those are the dues
    Once the words are spoken
    Something may be broken
    Still, you love her
    What can you lose?

    But what if she goes?
At least now, you have part of her
What if she had to choose?

    Leave it alone
    Hold it all in
    Better a bone
    Don't even begin
    With so much to win
    There's too much to lose

    Lyrics
There again I've more to do
Than simply get the message through
    I haven't started!
Let's get this show on the road
    Let's make it obvious
    Peron is off and rolling

    Eyes! Hair! Mouth! Figure!
    Dress! Voice! Style! Movement!
    Hands! Magic! Rings! Glamour!
    Face! Diamonds! Excitement! Image!

    I came from the people
    They need to adore me
    So Christian Dior me
From my head to my toes
    I need to be dazzling
I want to be Rainbow High!
    They must have excitement
    And so must I

    Eyes! Hair! Mouth! Figure!
    Dress! Voice! Style! Movement!

    I'm their product
    It's vital you sell me
    So Machiavell-me
    Make an Argentine Rose!
    I need to be thrilling
I want to be Rainbow High!
    They need their escape
    And so do I

    Eyes! Hair! Mouth! Figure!
    Dress! Voice! Style! Movement!
    Hands! Magic! Rings! Glamour!
    Face! Diamonds! Excitement! Image!

All my descamisados expect me to outshine the enemy
    I won't disappoint them!

    I'm their savior!
    That's what they call me
    So Lauren Bacall me
    Anything goes
    To make me fantastic
I have to be Rainbow High
    In magical colors

You're not decorating a girl for a night on the town!
And I'm not a second-rate queen getting kicks with a crown!
    Next stop will be Europe!
    The Rainbow's gonna tour
    Dressed up, somewhere to go
    We'll put on a show!
    Look out, mighty Europe!
Because you oughta know whatcha gonna get in me
    Just a little touch of
    Just a little touch of
    Argentina's brand of Star quality!

You push me to go the extra mile
You push me when it's difficult to smile
You push me, a better version of myself
You push me, only you and no one else

    Lyrics
    My name is Dita
    I'll be your mistress tonight
I'll be your loved one darling
    Turn off the light
I'll be your sorceress, your heart's magician
    I'm not a witch, I'm a love technician
I'll be a guiding light in your darkest hour
I'm gonna change your life, I'm like a poison flower

Give it up, do as I say
Give it up and let me have my way

This is a different version of Erotica, with more explicit lyrics. It was included as a bonus in the Sex book. The William Orbit Remix of Erotica actually uses the vocals of Erotic.

    Lyrics
My guy is really something, he's sensitive and shy
My guy is such a bumpkin, it doesn't take much to make him cry
If you hurt someone helpless, it's like taking away all his toys
He's just a cry baby boy

My guy is sentimental, he's always feeling blue
He can be so temperamental and I don't know what I should do
If you step on a little bug he cries all over the floor
He's just a cry baby bore

I don't want to hurt his feelings
But his outbursts have me really
    Boo-hoo-hoo-ing all the time
If I turn out like him, I think I'm gonna cry, baby
La, la, la, la, la, la
    He's such a cry baby
La, la, la, la, la, la

And I'll tell you something else

My guy is such a wet noodle, he's always teary-eyed
He acts like a real cock-a-doodle, he can't even tell you why
If you just play him a sappy song, he acts like his doggie just died
He's just a cry baby guy

    No kidding, oh dear

My guy is such a whiner, he's worse than baddie so
A cockroach seen in the diner, and the tears flow out of the blue
And if I ask him to knock it off, he goes and cries in the can
He's just a cry baby man

I don't want to hurt his feelings
But his outbursts have me really
    Boo-hoo-hoo-ing all the time
If I turn out like him, I think I'm gonna cry, baby
La, la, la, la, la, la
    He's such a cry baby
La, la, la, la, la, la

    I love a cry baby
La, la, la, la, la, la
    He's such a cry baby
La, la, la, la, la, la

Would you knock it off please? Thank you

    Lyrics
    What's new Buenos Aires?
    I'm new!
I want to say I'm just a little stuck on you
    You'll be on me too!
I get out here Buenos Aires
    Stand back
You ought to know whatcha gonna get in me
Just a little touch of star quality!
Fill me up with your heat, with your noise
    With your dirt, overdo me
Let me dance to your beat, make it loud
Let it hurt, run it through me
Don't hold back you are certain to impress
Tell the driver this is where I'm staying

    Hello Buenos Aires!
    Get this
Just look at me, dressed up somewhere to go
    We'll put on a show!

Take me in at your flood, give me speed
Give me lights, set me humming
Shoot me up with your blood
Wine me up with your nights, watch me coming
All I want is a whole lot of excess
Tell the singer this is where I'm playing

    Stand back Buenos Aires!
Because you ought to know whatcha gonna get in me
Just a little touch of star quality!

And if ever I go too far
It's because of the things you are
    Beautiful town I love you
    And if I need a moment's rest
Give your lover the very best
    Real eiderdown and silence

    You're a tramp, you're a treat
You will shine to the death, you are shoddy
But you're flesh, you are meat
You shall have every breath in my body
Put me down for a lifetime of success
Give me credit I'll find ways of paying

    Rio de la Plata!
    Florida! Corrientes! Nueve de Julio!
    All I want to know!

    Stand back Buenos Aires!
Because you oughta know whatcha gonna get in me
    Just a little touch of
    Just a little touch of
Just a little touch of star quality!

    Lyrics
    In my hallucination
I saw my Beloved's flower garden
    In my vertigo
    In my dizziness
    In my drunken haze
Whirling and dancing like a spinning wheel

I saw myself as the source of existence
I was there in the beginning
And I was the Spirit of Love
    Now I am sober
    There is only the hangover
    And the memory of love
    And only the sorrow
    I yearn for happiness
    I ask for help
    I want mercy

    And my Love says
"Look at me and hear me
Because I am here just with that"

I am your moon and your moonlight too
I am your flower garden and your water too
I have come all this way eager for you
    Without shoes or shawl

    I want you to laugh
    To kill all your worries
    To love you
    To nourish you

    Oh the sweet bitterness
I will soothe you and heal you
    I will bring you roses
I too have been covered with thorns

A Gift Of Love - Music inspired by The Love Poems of Rumi
    Song
In the 13th century Persian poet Rumi (named after the city where he lived) composed works of mysticism and desire that inspired countless people in his own time and throughout the centuries. His poems expressed the deepest longings of the human heart for its beloved, for that transcendent intimacy which is the source of the divine.
Contemporary spiritualist Deepak Chopra got inspired by Rumi's Love Poems and asked several celebrities to read them to music. Among them are Demi Moore, Goldie Hawn, Martin Sheen, Debra Winger and of course Madonna. Madonna choose the poem Bittersweet.
Devoted Madonnafan Barney Medunic also used an acapella version of the track for his great (unofficial) remix Whirling and Dancing, which was very popular on Napster.

    Lyrics
A long long time ago I can still remember
How that music used to make me smile
And I knew that if I had my chance
I could make those people dance
And maybe they'd be happy for a while

Did you write the book of love
And do you have faith in God above
If the Bible tells you so
Now do you believe in rock 'n roll
And can music save your mortal soul
And can you teach me how to dance real slow

Well, I know that you're in love with him
Cause I saw you dancin in the gym
You both kicked off your shoes
Man, I dig those rhythm and blues

I was a lonely teenage broncin buck
With a pink carnation and a pickup truck
But I knew that I was out of luck
    The day the music died

    I started singing

    Bye bye Miss American Pie
Drove my chevy to the levee
    But the levee was dry
And good old boys were drinkin whiskey and rye
Singin this will be the day that I die
This will be the day that I die

I met a girl who sang the blues
And I asked her for some happy news
But she just smiled and turned away
Well, I went down to the sacred store
Where I'd heard the music years before
But the man there said the music wouldn't play

Well now in the streets the children screamed
The lovers cried and the poets dreamed
But not a word was spoken
The church bells all were broken
And the three men I admire the most
The Father, Son and the Holy Ghost
They caught the last train for the coast
    The day the music died

    We started singing

    Bye bye Miss American Pie
Drove my chevy to the levee
    But the levee was dry
And good old boys were drinkin whiskey and rye
Singin this will be the day that I die
This will be the day that I die

    Bye bye Miss American Pie
Drove my chevy to the levee
    But the levee was dry
And good old boys were drinkin whiskey and rye
Singin this will be the day that I die
This will be the day that I die

    We started singin'
    We started singin'
    We started singin'

    The Next Best Thing (OST)
    Music (Non-US version)
        Single
In 2000 Madonna and Rupert Everett starred in The Next Best Thing, a comedy drama. Madonna's character is Abbey, a single woman in her early 30s who ends up having a child with her gay friend. The movie tries to handle issues as single parentship, child custody and homosexuality. At one point Abbey and her friends are at the funeral of a friend who died from aids and they start singing Don McLean's classic 'American Pie'. Rupert Everett convinced Madonna to cover the song and add it to the soundtrack. Madonna and William Orbit reworked the song, making it shorter and more dancy. Released in the spring of 2000, American Pie reached #1 in a lot of countries, including the UK, Canada, Australia, Italy and Finland. Ironically there was no commercial single release in the US, but the single still reached the #29 spot, just based on airplay.
The song was added as a bonus track on the Music album (outside the US). In an interview with BBC's Jo Whiley in November 2001, Madonna admits regretting this decision, which "a certain record company exec twisted her arm into doing". To 'punish' the song, it wasn't included in GHV2.
    Video
The video pays tribute to the seventies in which the original song by Don McLean was recorded. They show several snaps of ordinary people; playing children, happy couples, a lonely woman in a store, etc. Director Philip Stolzl used a lot of splitscreens to show both those ordinary people and a rather extraordinary Madonna. Maddy is dressed in a blue shirt and a baggy jeans. On her dark blonde Raphael curls she's wearing a tiara. All through the video she's dancing in front of a large American flag. Rupert Everett - who did backing vocals - appears once in a while too, but there are no scenes from the movie. Funniest moments of the video are when Madonna turns around and shows the crack of her ass, and at the end, when she pulls up her trousers and then tears them when she sits down.

    Lyrics
To have and not to hold
    So hot yet so cold
My heart is in your hand
    And yet you never stand
Close enough for me to have my way

To love but not to keep
    To laugh not to weep
Your eyes they go right through
    And yet you never do
Anything to make me want to stay

    Like a moth
    To a flame
    Only I
    Am to blame

Ba ba da ba ba ba, what can I do
Ba ba da ba ba ba, I go straight to you
Ba ba da ba ba ba, I've been told
You're to have not to hold

To look but not to see
    To kiss but never be
    The object of your desire
    I'm walking on a wire
And there's no one at all
    To break my fall

    Like a moth
    To a flame
    Only I
    Am to blame

Ba ba da ba ba ba, what can I do
Ba ba da ba ba ba, I go straight to you
Ba ba da ba ba ba, I've been told
You're to have not to hold
You're to have not to hold
    You're to have
    Not to hold

    Like a moth
    To a flame
    Only I
    Am to blame

Ba ba da ba ba ba, what can I do
Ba ba da ba ba ba, I go straight to you
Ba ba da ba ba ba, I've been told
You're to have not to hold
You're to have not to hold
You're to have not to hold
    You're to have

    Lyrics
    Working monday through friday
Takes up all of my time
If I can get to the weekend
Everything will work out just fine
That's when I can go crazy
That's when I can have fun
Time to be with my baby
    Time to come undone

Where's the party, I want to free my soul
Where's the party, I want to lose control
Where's the party, I want to free my soul
Where's the party, I want to lose control

    Couldn't wait to get older
Thought I'd have so much fun
Guess I'm one of the grown-ups
Now I have to get the job done
    People give me the business
    I'm not living in fear
    I'm just living in chaos
    Gotta get away from here

Where's the party, I want to free my soul
Where's the party, I want to lose control
Where's the party, I want to free my soul
Where's the party, I want to lose control

Don't want to grow old too fast
Don't want to let the system get me down
I've got to find a way to make the good times last
And if you'll show me how
    I'm ready now

Slow down you move too fast
Gonna make the good times last
Gonna let my hair hang down
    I'm ready now
Slow down you move too fast
Gonna make the good times last
Gonna let my hair hang down
    I'm ready now

    Where's the party
Where's the party, someone tell me
Where's the party, come on, come on, come on
    Where's the party

Don't want to grow old too fast
Don't want to let the system get me down
I've got to find a way to make the good times last
And if you'll show me how

Where's the party, I want to lose control

        Song
There were a few promo singles of this party song to promote the You Can Dance album, but it was never released commercially.
    Tour
The Drowned World/Substitute For Love video theme had been used on the Who's That Girl Tour already: the Where's The Party performance starts off with a scan of a New York Post article, titled "Madonna: I'm not ashamed" which is about the nude pictures in Playboy. As the dancers carry big cameras and act like paparazzi, Madonna appears on stage as a real diva with flashy sun glasses and a boa around her neck. Not intimidated by her stalkers, she sings her party song.
Blond Ambition Tour: after fooling around with Niki and Donna during Causing A Commotion, Madonna and the girls perform this dance song. Later they're joined by the boys for a great dance routine. The boys take over and show off their impressive moves, while Madonna gets ready for her steamy Like A Virgin performance.

    Lyrics
    I don't wanna say goodbye

There are some who believe that I owe them something
But they're wrong, I owe nothing to no one but myself
And there are some who say they created me
But only my parents will have that acclaim
I took it from there, I am to blame

    Lyrics
    It's your honesty
With you I have no choice
    When you talk to me
I could make love to your voice
    It's the things I see
When I look into your eyes
    It's your honesty
Pulling me closer to you baby
You know you drive me crazy

You are one of a kind
And I want you to be mine, all mine
    Pulling me closer to you

    Song
Madonna originally wrote this song with Dallas Austin during the Bedtime Stories recording sessions in 1994. While it was dumped for the album, it was later rumoured to appear on some benefit album, after being reworked by Missy Elliott co-producer Timbaland (which never happened). In 2003, it was surprisingly included on the EP Remixed & Revisited, released on November 25th.
