Lucky Star
Lyrics
You must be my lucky star
'Cause you shine on me wherever you are
I just think of you and I start to glow
And I need your light
And baby you know
Starlight starbright
First star I see tonight
Starlight starbright
Make everything all right
Starlight starbright
First star I see tonight
Starlight starbright
Yeah
You must be my lucky star
'Cause you make the darkness seem so far
And when I'm lost you'll be my guide
I just turn around and you're by my side
Starlight starbright
First star I see tonight
Starlight starbright
Make everything all right
Starlight starbright
First star I see tonight
Starlight starbright
Yeah
Come on, shine your heavenly body tonight
'Cause I know you're gonna make everything all right
Hmm come on, shine your heavenly body tonight
'Cause I know you're gonna make everything all right
You may be my lucky star
But I'm the luckiest by far
You may be my lucky star
But I'm the luckiest by far
Starlight starbright
First star I see tonight
Starlight starbright
Make everything all right
Starlight starbright
First star I see tonight
Starlight starbright
Yeah
Come on, shine your heavenly body tonight
'Cause I know you're gonna make everything all right
Hmm come on, shine your heavenly body tonight
'Cause I know you're gonna make everything all right
(You may be my lucky star)
(But I'm the luckiest by far)
(You may be my lucky star)
(But I'm the luckiest by far)
(You may be my lucky star)
(But I'm the luckiest by far)
You may be my lucky star
What you do to me baby
(You may be my lucky star)
(But I'm the luckiest by far)
You know
I'm the luckiest by far
Starlight starbright
First star I see tonight
Starlight starbright
Make everything all right
Starlight starbright
First star I see tonight
Starlight starbright
Starlight starbright
You make everything all right
What you do to me baby
You got to stay by my side tonight
Starlight starbright baby
Starlight starbright
Stay by my side tonight
What you do to me baby
What you do, what you do to me baby
Stay by my side tonight
You may be my lucky star

Single
The first song Madonna wrote as a signed artist was Lucky Star, a simple but catchy love song. Released in 1984, it charted at #4 in the US and #14 in the UK (one of the very few Madonna singles that peaked outside of the UK Top 10). It became the first out of 16 consecutive Top 5 hits on Billboard, a feat that surpassed the Beatles' record. Because of that huge success, the release of Madonna's second album had to be pushed back to the end of 1984.
Video
A video was made for the '84 release, directed by Arthur Pierson. It basically showed Madonna dancing around all the time in front of a white background, exploiting her Boy Toy image to the top: a wild haircut, dressed in black punky clothes, that she would later describe as 'rags'.
Tour
Lucky Star got its premiere on the Virgin Tour, where Madonna performed it in her black outfit (with a cross on her chest) similar to the video choreography.
Lucky Star was also performed on the Who's That Girl Tour, right after the opening number Open Your Heart. The twinkling keyboard sound and the turning disco ball make all the stars shine around Madonna. But with some extra uptempo beats she knows to turn this love song into a dancy performance.
Almost two decades later, Lucky Star was performed live again, on the Confessions Tour. After the exhausting La Isla Bonita, Madonna crashes down on stage, but backup singers Nicki & Donna bring her back on her feet, covering her with a magical cape, which reads "Dancing Queen" on the back (another Abba reference, while the rest of her outfit is a combination of Agnetha's & Frida's from their late 70s tour). As Madonna opens the cape, the inside shows twinkling disco balls (lucky stars?). Madonna performs a great version of Lucky Star, sung over the instrumental of Hung Up, together with Donna and Nicki (the only time the backup singers get their part in the spotlight). At the end of the song, Madonna asks the audience if they want more and sings the chorus of Hung Up, then goes offstage for her final costume change, building up the anticipation for the encore.
