Our forum member Cam posted the following interesting article from Paul Fraser Collectables about "collecting Madonna" on our Forum:
Investing in Madonna memorabilia today could see big returns as she proves popular at auction
Twenty four years ago today, Madonna celebrated yet another UK number one single, with the iconic "Papa Don't Preach." At the time, she was viewed as a pop star at the pinnacle of her career, offering a daring mix of youth and sexuality that had button down conservatives up in arms. While the tastes and trends of music may have changed since then, one thing has remained a constant: Madonna.
To date, Madonna has sold 250 million records worldwide and currently stands in theGuinness World Record books as the top selling female artist of all time. And despite numerous hair style changes and ill advised lycra based videos, she remains as popular as ever. Her 2008, Sticky and Sweet world tour made $408 million, the highest ever grossing tour for a solo artist and the second highest of all time. It's therefore of little surprise to find that Madonna memorabilia is becoming popular among collectors, who are starting to recognise her status and potential to match The Beatles, Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley.
According to the PFC40 autograph index, which details the 2000 - 2010 price performance of 40 of the most sought after celebrity autographs, Madonna autographs have seen an increase in value of 138.7% in the last decade, with a signed photo valued at £375 in 2000, now commanding a price of £895. As an icon of some thirty years, collectors and investors looking towards the Madonna memorabilia market will also find a variety of collectibles. With some pieces available for around £1,000 and under, there really is something to everyone's taste
Platinum record displays are one such example, a framed display of Madonna's 1986 album True Blue, recently fetched £260 ($384), while a signed platinum disc of the 2003 album American Life sold for £570 (£864) in 2005. Similarly, cheques have proven a relatively low cost opportunity to obtain Madonna's autograph, with two 1988 cheques signed Madonna Ciccone, auctioned for £640 ($960) and £750 ($1054.80) off estimated prices of $200-400.
Clothes from the star herself have also been purchased relatively cheaply with a leather jacket from rehearsals of the 1990 "Blond Ambition" tour selling for £500 ($777) at a 2005 Bonhams auction, while even a pair of Dolce and Gabbana stretch pants worn by Madonna, sold for £700 ($1,058). Nevertheless, more significant clothing memorabilia requires more significant investment. As well as being a singer, Madonna has enjoyed limited success on the silver screen. Dresses from these films have started to come on the market and offer a middle level investment opportunity for collectors and investors alike. In 2005, Bonhams auctioned, a gold, sleeveless, full length gown worn by Madonna in the film version of the famous musical Evita for £3,000 ($4,113).
Similarly, dresses made famous in music videos and tours offer collectors a unique opportunity to invest. A white wedding dress, worn by Madonna during her 1985 Virgin Tour was sold via the New York based Gotta Have It auction house for £3,750 ($5,662), against an estimate of £2,000 ($3,000). The dress had additional significance: it was worn by Britney Spears on US show Saturday Night Live in 2000, when she broke records as the youngest person to present and perform musically on the show. The value of such collectible and iconic dresses could soon increase, with some museums beginning to show an interest in Madonna memorabilia.
Earlier this year, the planned sale of the pink dress worn by Madonna in the 1985 video "Material Girl" was scrapped in favour of selling the dress to a travelling Madonna exhibition. Increasingly, personal collectibles are proving popular at both the mid level and high end of the market.
A 1979 cassette of Madonna performing an acoustic demo recorded before Madonna signed to any major record labels exceeded all expectations at a recent auction. The rare recording sold for $6,400, over three times the estimate of £1,300 ($2,000).
The most valuable Madonna collectibles have commonly touched on a specific moment from her career and much like recordings, signed documents offer truly unique collectibles at a more significant price.
A 4" x 7" black leather bound appointment book, covering the similar period from April 30th 1988 through to January 22nd 1989, came up for sale in August, 2008. The document offered a window into the star's routine, at a time when she was in the public eye, thanks to her marriage to Hollywood bad boy Sean Penn. With a low end estimate of £5,500 ($8,000) the personal document sold for $11,616 ($17,500).
Many of the most personal memorabilia, is also the most easily recognised, thanks to the worldwide focus on the star. A classic example being the stage worn Dolce and Gabbana bra from Madonna's "Live down Under" tour of Australia in 1994. The tour would be immortalised, thanks to a bestselling film of the show, which helped to broadcast the image of the stage worn bra to a worldwide audience. It was therefore of little surprise that the item sold for £8,100 ($12,500) over three times the auction estimate of £2,750 ($4,000). When we consider that, to date, Madonna has completed seven world tours, with a total gross of some $972.7 million worldwide, the collectible value of costumes and dresses related to these shows could be just as significant.
In much the same way that the careers of great sportsmen are honoured by trophies and medals, pop icons like Madonna garner success with numerous awards. These awards represent a high end investment that can be enjoyed by collectors and investors alike.
In 2008, Gotta Have it auctions sold a "World's Best Selling Pop Rock Artist of the Year" award belonging to Madonna from 2001. The statue was donated by Warner Music International as part of a charity auction and sold for £12,000 ($18,000), improving on the estimate of £11,000 ($17,000).
Given that Madonna has enjoyed a pop career of over thirty years, there remains the potential for further award memorabilia to be introduced onto the market. Yet, the most valuable Madonna memorabilia currently available to collectors focuses on her sexuality, something which transcended both her public and personal life thanks to her provocative style. In February last year Christie's put two photographs of Madonna up for sale. One photo created for a 1980s Playboy shoot, exceeded estimates, reaching $18,750 (£12,888) at auction. Yet the most popular and ultimately most sexualised collectible photographs of Madonna date back to her pre pop days in 1979. A nude picture had been expected to fetch £10,365 ($15,000) at the Christie's auction in New York, yet sold for £26,000 ($37,500). Recent years have seen more pictures emerge on the market, meaning we may not have seen the last of these particular Madonna collectibles at auction.
The market for memorabilia relating to the Queen of Pop also has huge potential to grow in the next ten to twenty years. The best comparison to be found is that of Michael Jackson. Since his death last year, the Michael Jackson memorabilia market has seen massive surges in the prices attached to collectible items. The next twenty years could see similar increases for Madonna memorabilia.
A Julien's Auctions sale at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York saw the pen scrawled lyrics to Beat It sell for £40,000 ($60,000), off a high end estimate of £2,500 ($4000). Currently, the hand written lyrics to Madonna's 1990 hit Cry Baby are currently on the market for just under £5,000 ($7,500) and could represent an investment with similar potential.
Like Madonna, Michael Jackson's career has been littered with iconic memorabilia. However, unlike Jackson, these collectibles remain greatly undervalued. A replica of the strap and zipper laden black jacket made famous by the 1987 album cover Bad and worn by Michael Jackson during his 1989 World tour recently sold for £135,000, over 20 times its auction estimate. In comparison, the famous pair of Levi 501 jeans which Madonna wore on the cover of her 1986 album True Blue, are on the market today for £18,000, alongside autographed documents related to the shoot, with both items, currently around a seventh of the price.
The most valuable memorabilia piece related to Michael Jackson remains the white rhinestone covered glove, introduced to us in 1983, alongside the famous moonwalk dance which sold for £212,000 at auction last year. Yet, similarly, the famous black basque garment, introduced to Madonna fans during the ground breaking Erotica period of her career, is currently on the market and valued at £15,000 ($20,000). With the career of Madonna continuing to enjoy steady high level success, the value of collectibles relating to an icon of celebrity culture, music and sexuality, could ensure that the value of her collectibles continue to increase. The market could soon be witnessing a further influx of Madonna memorabilia too. Madonna, herself, admits to housing a huge collection of her one off pieces, which may one day enter the market: "I have an archive museum in a warehouse which houses all the costumes I've worn on stage and in videos....one-of-a-kind pieces made for me and special pieces I've always loved."
Earlier this year a storage unit once belonging to Madonna's assistant Melissa Crow, had been repossessed. This allowed the facility owner to gain ownership of the contents for just £100 ($150). With a collection including photographs with former husband Sean Penn, actor Warren Beatty, previously unpublished photographs and other memorabilia, we probably won't be seeing the last of Madonna collectibles for some time.

Fellow music superstars Prince and Madonna appear to have ended their decades-long feud, RollingStone.com reports.

The Material Girl, 52, was among the celebrities cheering on Prince's sold-out Tuesday show at NYC's Madison Square Garden. Other A-listers in attendance were Jimmy Fallon, Donald and Melania Trump and an awestruck Leighton Meester, whom Prince serenaded onstage.

During the show, an attendee reports that Prince, also 52, made a good-natured joke about the high price of Madonna's concert tickets. "I know I'm expensive!" he joshed, then making a friendly call-out to Madonna by name.

Things were far less friendly between the pair, who briefly dated in 1985 and who dueted on "Love Song," a track from Madonna's 1988 Like a Prayer album.
Madonna sniped in an interview that Prince was a "little troll," and quipped in 1994 that he wouldn't eat during a dinner date. "He was just sipping tea, very daintily," Madonna said. "I have this theory about people who don't eat. They annoy me."

For his part, Prince slammed Madonna - and her growing brood of children - during a 2007 concert in London, sniping, "I got so many hits y'all can't handle me. I got more hits than Madonna's got kids."

Madonna's estranged brother is speaking out about the famous pop star -again.
Christopher Ciccone, who reportedly hasn't spoken to his older sibling since his book "Life With My Sister Madonna" was published in 2008, told RadarOnline.com that she isn't "following societal values."
Referring to the 52-year-old singer's younger lovers, Ciccone noted that "if she continues to date all these much younger guys, it could start to look creepy." "But I think that a lot of Madonna's emotional needs are met by taking care of her children," he continued. "These boyfriends must really be like a kind of distraction for her."
"She certainly isn't following societal values, but then again my sister never has and probably never will either," Ciccone, 50, said.
Still, he commended the music icon on her parenting skills. Lourdes, Madonna's 14-year-old daughter with ex Carlos Leon, "has turned out really well." "I'm sure her mother is very proud of her," he added. Ciccone also offered up praise of his sister's career while criticizing Lady Gaga. "I can see a lot of my sister's influence in what Lady Gaga is doing today. It's like 'Madonna on speed' actually," he said, explaining that Gaga is talented but sometimes "goes too far with her costumes and persona." "Madonna was a genius at changing her image into something that her fans could identify with and replicate if they wanted," Ciccone said.

Ok, this is not about "our Madonna" but quite funny!
A German firm called Madonna has asked to register their name as a trademarkin Switzerland but the Swiss Federal Insitute of Intellectual Property and courts have ruled on the matter. It can't be done as the term 'Madonna' is a reference to theVirgin Mary, and that, as such, its commercial use as a trademark would be immoral. The court defined the meaning of the disputed term 'Madonna' in the understanding of the Swiss public in German, French and Italian (the main languages spoken in Switzerland). It confirmed that, at least in Italian, the term 'Madonna' refers to the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus, and that such an understanding in only one national language was sufficient. The Virgin Mary occupies a central place in Catholic Christianity.
Secondary meanings in art and modern culture relied on by the applicant, (for example"our Madonna") are not sufficiently strong to supersede the primarily religious meaning of the word.
In that respect, the name 'Madonna' differed from the name 'Christ' – a registered trademark for watches and jewellery in Switzerland – which is also a common second name in Switzerland.

CNN’s replacement for Larry King, sure knows how to grind an ax. British TV personalityPiers Morgan has barely taken over the job and he’s already banned pop star Madonnafrom appearing.
What’s the problem? It seems that Madonna was an “annoyance” to him back when he was a sleazy Fleet Street tabloid newspaper editor. Is he kidding?
Madonna famously clashed with any number of London’s tabloids during the time she lived there. What’s new about that? If Larry King was known for anything it was for making his show a forum for all points of view for people from all walks of life. But Morgan seems determined to carry on a feud that goes back two decades. “She’s kind of been an irritant in my life for 20 years, so I had to ban her from the show. It’s probably quite childish, but it made me feel better,” he said.
Actually, it is more than quite childish. CNN should have its collective head examined for hiring Morgan to replace King. Say what you will about, King’s checkered past, he always saw himself as a newsman and approached his job that way. Morgan is an entertainer, and now fans of the show will have to put up with his petty jealousies. What’s more, it seems like the whole tone of the show is about to change. Instead of a news show, it will be an entertainment chat show opened to people who pay proper deference to Morgan’s overweening ego. Morgan, of course, says he will reconsider Madonna’s ban if she makes a sincere apology. “A bended-knee apology on CNN might swing it. Other than that, it’s a lifetime ban,” he says. Ha. That will never happen.
The British newsman says he already has plans to interview a major pop superstar, Lady Gaga. “Lady Gaga is half her age, twice as good-looking, twice as talented, and twice as hot. I mean, why would I bother with Madonna, seriously,” he said. Lady Gaga should tell Morgan to take a flying leap. In fact, celebrities should boycott his show, until this effete snob apologizes to Madonna.

Madonna issues a statement about MalawiMadonna issues a statement about MalawiMadonna issues a statement about Malawi

In an exclusive statement issued to the Huffington Post queen of popMadonna speaks about her involvement in Raising Malawi:

"I remain deeply committed and I am more passionate than ever about helping the children of Malawi - especially the girls. In a country where only 33% of Malawian girls attend secondary school, I realize that the plans we had in place for the Raising Malawi Academy for Girls simply would not serve enough children. My original vision is now on a much bigger scale. I want to reach thousands not hundreds of girls. I want to do more and I want to do it better. While I am grateful to all the people who have given me guidance and support up until now, we are in the process of implementing several changes and additions to the management of Raising Malawi in both the US and Malawi. I am also working with Trevor Neilson and his team at Global Philanthropy Group to shift the strategies that we had in place so that we can accomplish our goals with more efficiency as we continue to consult with our government partners in Malawi. This is a larger challenge than I thought, but I welcome it. We are focused on an approach which builds schools within communities across the country. We are currently determining the size, location, staffing and curriculum of the schools. I will continue to monitor the process of reaching these goals here and through my ongoing visits to Malawi. "

Avril Lavigne wants to be the new Madonna and follow her idol by having a career which lasts for decades. The Canadian singer has set her sights on matching 52-year-old Madonna's career longevity.

Avril, 26, said: "I definitely can see myself still being out there in 20 years' time. I want to be around the way Madonna has done it. She's had her life but still maintained her career throughout."
While she not nearly in the same league as Madonna yet, Avril has had enormous success. Her first three albums all went to No.1 in the UK and Let Go sold 16 million copies worldwide. The singer's comeback single What The Hell is out next Monday. Goodbye Lullaby will be in shops on March 7.

Madonna shipped boxes and bales containing toys, chocolate and sweets to six orphanages in Malawi. Along with the goodies, the Queen Of Popincluded a handwritten note that read "To my Malawi children on Christmas and Boxing Day. I wish I was with you. See you soon, M."

Officials at Madonna's charity, Raising Malawi, distributed the items and other miniature Christmas cards signed by Madonna and children Lourdes and Rocco. The notes read: "Mercy, David, Rocco, Lourdes and I send you a blessed Christmas to all of you!"
Also in the bales were new clothing and items that Madonna, Lourdes, Rocco and Mercy have outgrown and can no longer use, officials tell UsMagazine.com. Madonna also threw an open-air party at Consol Homes, an orphanage near Lilongwe, the town where she teaches a Kabbalah spirituality class to children. Over 1,000 people from the surrounding villages were invited to celebrate with the 2,500 orphans and underprivileged children. "Madonna says she always enjoys the traditional dances the villagers perform for her when she visits," Yacinta Chapomba, director of Consol Homes, tells Us. "She asked us to invite as many villagers as possible for the Christmas party."

With snow causing shutdowns at UK airports, passengers on a diverted Virgin Atlantic flight from New York are complaining, not about the weather but about special treatment given Madonna and her entourage.

Flight VS010 was supposed to land at Heathrow, but was instead diverted to Standsted Airport, where passengers sat on the plane for nearly three hours -- except for Madonna, who was reportedly allowed to disembark two hours before everyone else.
"After about an hour, a bus came along and took her and her party of about 15 off the plane. It seemed a little unfair, it's not like she is the President or anything. The rest of us all had to wait for another two hours," a disgruntled fellow passenger tells the UK'sDaily Mail.
A statement from Virgin, obtained by AOL Travel News, says the plane was "diverted due to very difficult weather conditions" and the disembarkation was delayed by ground crew until buses arrived to take passengers to London's Heathrow. "We apologize for any inconvenience this diversion caused, but for safety reasons this action was unavoidable."
As for Madonna's special treatment, Virgin says, "It is common across airlines that business- and first-class passengers disembark first and this is reflected in the higher cost of the ticket."
An unidentified passenger, who was also in Virgin's Upper Class, says "Madonna was taken off the plane way before the rest of the first-class people. We were all grumbling about it." The passenger also complains the Queen of Pop used her hour-long delay to do yoga in the plane's aisles.
