The 2010 MTV Video Music Awards are only a few weeks away. The biggest party of the year features nominated clips by Lady Gaga, Eminem, Jay-Z, Ke$ha and Katy Perry and will feature performances by Kanye West, Justin Bieber, Drake, B.o.B and Florence and the Machine (with many more to be announced). In order to properly prepare yourself for what's to come, every day the MTV Newsroom Blog will deliver a classic moment in the history of the MTV Video Music Awards. Today's installment: Madonna sets the first VMAs on fire.
On September 14, 1984, the worlds of music, television and awards shows changed forever when hosts Dan Aykroyd and Bette Midler kicked off the very first MTV Video Music Awards. Obviously, the first VMAs looks pretty odd from this vantage point, but the twist is they actually seemed pretty odd back when they actually happened. Midler was certainly a bizarre choice to co-host, and the list of winners that year included some early MTV visionaries (David Bowie, the Cars, Cyndi Lauper) but also some unusual choices (ZZ Top and Herbie Hancock, who took home a total of five Moonmen that night).
But the first VMAs will be best remembered as the forum that allowed Madonna to don a wedding dress and writhe around on stage during "Like a Virgin." It was sexy, shocking and memorable, and it successfully set the tone for future VMA performances.
The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12 at 9 p.m.

Madonna has been accused of distorting history in a film about Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson by portraying the King as an unlikely sex symbol and the late Queen Mother as a villainous plotter.
Insiders say the pop star’s depiction of the couple at the centre of the 1936 Abdication crisis in W.E., her second film as a director, is overly sympathetic and largely unrecognisable.
The £18million film, currently being shot in Britain and France and due for release next year, intersperses Edward’s affair with the American divorcee with a love story set in 1998.
Fact and fiction: Director Madonna on the set of ther film W.E. It has already received criticism for an overly sympathetic portrayal of Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson
In a further Royal controversy, Madonna, 52, has included a ‘friendly’ portrayal of Mohamed Al Fayed, who still insists the Princess of Wales and his son Dodi were murdered by the Royal establishment in 1997.
One source close to the project said: ‘The portrayal is so far removed from reality they’re almost unrecognisable to anyone who knows the facts. The film may work as entertainment but it certainly doesn’t work as history.’
Madonna’s decision to play ‘fast and loose’ with facts has already caused problems.
The Mail on Sunday can reveal she wanted Alastair Bruce, one of the Queen’s Heralds and an Extra Equerry to the Earl and Countess of Wessex, to advise on the film.
After he met the singer, Mr Bruce is believed to have declined because he was uncomfortable with the ‘extreme’ blurring of fact and fiction.

An insider said: ‘Madonna’s Edward is a Latin lover-type, a strong-willed macho figure, more than a match for a determined and outspoken Wallis.
‘But in reality he was rather an effeminate figure who wasn’t a great-looking man. He was always slightly in awe of Wallis.’
The source added: ‘You could say he has become a sort of fantasy figure for Madonna. She is a strong-willed American like Wallis and she has dreamt up the sort of man who could deal with her.’
Madonna is understood to have told British actor James D’Arcy, who plays Edward, to adopt a more confident tone than the real King to film the Abdication speech, in which he announced he would give up the throne to marry ‘the woman I love’.
The move resolved the constitutional crisis of twice-divorced Mrs Simpson having two living ex-husbands. After the Abdication, Edward was created Duke of Windsor by his brother and successor, George VI.
He married Wallis six months later and she became Duchess of Windsor. In the film she is played by Andrea Riseborough, 28, who portrayed the young Margaret Thatcher in the TV drama The Long Walk To Finchley.
Controversy: Andrea Riseborough as Wallis Simpson on the set of W.E.
The film’s depiction of George VI’s wife Elizabeth is also controversial. The future Queen Mother is said to be the closest thing in it to a villain, with her and her husband portrayed as plotting against the couple.
Madonna was forced to shoot the Windsor Castle scenes in Eastnor Castle in Herefordshire after Buckingham Palace declined to help.
Glamorising the Duke and Duchess further risks provoking uproar because the couple have been accused of having had pro-Nazi tendencies in the late Thirties.
Several big names attached to the project, including Ewan McGregor and Vera Farmiga, George Clooney’s co-star in Up In The Air, also pulled out before filming began.
Margo Stilley, a British actress who was to play Lady Thelma Furness, a mistress of Edward, quit after the cameras started rolling, citing artistic differences with Madonna.
Australian actress Abbie Cornish, 28, stars in W.E. as a woman who immerses herself in the Abdication affair as solace from her own loveless marriage in 1998.
At an auction of items belonging to the Duke and Duchess, she meets and falls in love with a Russian security guard. In one scene, Mr Al Fayed, who owned many of the Duke and Duchess’s former possessions before auctioning them, is shown helping Miss Cornish’s character with her research on the Royal couple.
The ex-Harrods owner’s portrayal will raise questions about the extent of his involvement. In June, Madonna made a surprise appearance at a school fete organised by the Egyptian tycoon for his daughter Camilla.

Madonna is keen to work with Lady Gaga (PA) The Telephone singer still has some way to go before she can match the Material Girl for outrageous behaviour and record sales, but will be offered the chance to learn from her role model first hand when Madonna takes to the road again in 2011.

Who's that girl? Madonna's daughter Lourdes is starring as a schoolgirl in her mother's new film W.E.
    By Jody Thompson
Last updated at 12:38 PM on 1st September 2010

She's already followed in her mother's footsteps with religion, fashion and music - now Madonna's daughter Lourdes is following her onto the big screen too.
The 13-year-old - billed as Lola Leon in the film credits - was spotted on the set of her mother's movie W.E. wearing a school uniform ready for her movie debut.
It's not known yet exactly what part she's playing and how big her role will be.
School's out: Lourdes Leon changed into a school uniform to make her debut in her mother Madonna's new moive W.E. yesterday on set in London

Madonna and child: The popstar's daughter joined her now film director mother on the set for the day
Before she changed into her costume, Lourdes - known as Lola - had joined her mother on the shoot with brothers Rocco and David to see what progress was being made yesterday.
Madonna was shooting in Mayfair yesterday outside hotel Claridges, as well as outside a makeshift Downing Street located in Aldwych.
W.E., her second film as a director, tells the story of Edward VIII's relationship with Wallis Simpson.

The £18million film, currently being shot in Britain and France and due for release next year, intersperses Edward’s affair with the American divorcee with a love story set in 1998.
It features Bright Star's Abbie Cornish playing young married New Yorker Wally Winthrop from the 1998 part of the movie, as well as The Long Walk to Finchley's Andrea Riseborough as Simpson and James D'Arcy as Edward.
Madonna's first film Filth and Wisdom was met by generally negative reviews when it was put on limited release two years ago.
Starring her friends Richard E Grant and Gogol Bordello frontman Eugene Hutz, it was a billed as a comedy that told the story of three flatmates 'living desperate lives in London.'
However, critics instead found the film was desperate, with LA Weekly's Scott Foundas writing: 'Message to the director: Don’t quit your day job just yet.'
The criticism must have stung, as now it's being reported that the star is now taking too long to shoot scenes.
Lights, camera, action: Madonna directs her daughter outside a mock-up of Downing Street

Girl on film: Lourdes gets a big kiss to say well done after her movie debut
Popstar pondering: Sources on set say that Madonna has been spending too long on some scenes in her bid to get them perfect
A source revealed the erstwhile singer took three hours to shoot a 10 second bath scene due to overanalysing small details.
Madonna –  who is reportedly financing the picture herself — has been saving cash by bringing her own furniture from her house in New York — to use on the set, according to New York Post gossip column Page Six.
In June, Madonna acknowledged the project’s high cost to Interview magazine.
'Once I started casting and planning and working with my production designer, I went, "Oh, [bleep], I wrote a script about a bunch of rich people". That’s going to be great for the budget.'
Lourdes meanwhile has already launched her own Material Girl range of fashion and even dressed as her mother while singing along in her video for single Celebration.
The teenager even appeared on stage at the 2003 MTV Awards, when Madonna had her notorious onstage kiss with Britney Spears and has been regularly seen attending Kabbalah meetings.

The 2010 VMA Countdown: Britney Spears And Madonna Swap Spit
Posted 9/1/10 4:30 pm ET by MTV News in VMAs

The 2010 MTV Video Music Awards are only a few weeks away. The biggest party of the year features nominated clips by Lady Gaga, Eminem, Jay-Z, Ke$ha and Katy Perry and will feature performances by Kanye West, Eminem, Drake, Justin Bieber, Paramore, Usher, B.o.B, Florence and the Machine and Linkin Park. In order to properly prepare yourself for what's to come, every day the MTV Newsroom Blog will deliver a classic moment in the history of the MTV Video Music Awards. Today's installment: Madonna, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera make lip-locking history.
Does this one really need any set-up? You know you were watching the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards, which were partially a 20-year celebration of MTV as a network. You know you were excited when you saw Madonna, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera — three of the biggest and most successful divas in the history of pop music — on stage at the same time. You were totally into Madonna's medley of "Like a Virgin" and "Hollywood," and you were excited by their sexy, sexy costumes.
And you know that you nearly passed out when the Material Girl leaned over and kissed Spears square on the mouth, and then did the same to Aguilera. (The fact that she also turned to kiss Aguilera often gets lost, but everybody seemed too overwhelmed by the first kiss to really process the second.) Madonna's permanent place in VMA lore was already set in stone before "The Kiss," but this instantly-legendary moment solidified her place (and Britney's) in the VMA Hall of Fame. Who will make out this year? You'll have to tune in to find out.
The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12 at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 for Verizon subscribers) to vote for the winners from now through September 12.

She's one of the most famous women in the world and attracts attention and scrutiny wherever she goes.
But yesterday Madonna took a break from her usual glamorous style to wear an outfit that would help her blend in with the crowds on the New York subway.
Not a Material Girl: Madonna rides the New York subway undetected
The 52-year-old was unrecognisable as she stepped out in blue jeans, a black jacket and scarf, sunglasses, and a baseball cap.
With her hair pulled back into a ponytail and not a trace of makeup on her face, she could have been any average New Yorker out running errands.
And the mother-of-two was clearly enjoying the unusual lack of attention, getting onto a subway train without attracting the least bit of notice.
Just and average girl: Madonna blends in with the New York crowds
Sipping on a San Pellegrino Limonata, she rode the subway, walked around the platform before strolling the city with some friends.
Meanwhile, Madonna's toyboy Jesus Luz in enjoying as much attention as possible as he frolics in the sun in his native Brazi

The 24-year-old hit the beach in Rio, surrounded by enthusiastic girls who couldn't wait to have their picture taken with the famous DJ.
Don't you know who I am? Madonna goes out and about undetected
Madonna met Luz met at a photoshoot for W magazine in December 2008, three months after she split from second husband Guy Ritchie.
Thanks to the singer, Luz's profile has been substantially raised - his modelling career was heavily boosted and he started DJing after she paid for him to have lessons.
Luz is clearly grateful to his girlfriend, and has even introduced her to meet his mother Cristiane Regina da Silva, who is 14 years younger than the pop star.
Look at me! Jesus enjoys attention on the beach in Rio

Madonna to perform on X Factor?
Queen of pop Madonna could be performing on the first live X Factor show next month, according to new reports.
Pop legend Madonna could perform on X Factor's live show (Photo: PA) X Factor sources say that Madge could be performing on the show's first live broadcast on October 9.

Madge, who has had to put up with her songs being butchered by some contestants for a number of years, could now be showing them how it's really done.
The show is already renowned for drawing in some of the biggest names in the music business, with past performers including Beyonce, who dueted with 2008 winner Alexandra Burke on the programme.

Mariah Carey also famously cancelled her performance on Strictly Come Dancing to appear on the ITV show.

A source told the Daily Mirror that Madge has verbally agreed to appear on the show, saying: 'Madonna would be perfect to kick-off the last stage of the competition.'
If Madge does appear on the X Factor, she could get a case of déjà vu if hopeful Katie Waissel, whose blonde mop and quirky style are reminiscent of the pop star's look in the 1980s, makes it through to the live round.

The news comes shortly after an X Factor insider revealed that Robbie Williams and Gary Barlow could be performing on both Strictly Come Dancing and X Factor this year.

The duo will reportedly sing their song Shame on Strictly, before switching to ITV to perform with the rest of Take That on The X Factor.
