Madonna's Mercy opts for adorable military outfit (complete with mini handbag) to combat freezing New York temperatures

Madonna's adopted daughter Mercy is clearly taking some fashion tips from her stylish mother.

The adorable four-year-old looked both cute and fashionable as she donned a military style jacket, matching hat and scarf and accessorised the entire outfit with a miniature handbag.

But as well as looking trendy, the ensemble helped ensure little Mercy stayed warm in freezing New York, where temperatures reached a low of minus 2C yesterday.

Mercy's £75 'Miller' jacket was part of Madonna's close friend Stella McCartney's range for GapKids, which was launched last year.

Meanwhile, rumours have been circulating this week that Madonna is set to design a clothing line for exclusive U.S. department store Macy's.

The singer is said to be considering calling the collection 'Material Girl', but is thinking of opting for the name 'Truth or Dare' for a matching lingerie line.

Madonna is no stranger to the fashion industry, having collaborated with clothing store H&M in 2007 for her 'M' for Madonna spring fashion line.

She has also become somewhat of a fashion icon during her lengthy musical career, sparking trends including pointy bras and underwear as outerwear.

And it seems her 13-year-old daughter Lourdes, who joined her mother and adopted brother David Banda on the family outing, is fast following in her footsteps.

Lourdes displayed her unique sense of style during the family outing yesterday, pairing holey, black-and-white striped tights with Dr. Martens boots, a black miniskirt and tight black leather jacket.

Lourdes even out-styled her mother, who opted for an entire Ed Hardy outfit yesterday.

The 51-year-old wore an Ed Hardy t-shirt under a warm, but rather unattractive, puffa jacket, and matched it with an Ed Hardy baseball cap and her wardrobe staple of dark sunglasses.

One notable absence from the family day out was Madonna's 23-year-old boyfriend Jesus Luz, who has accompanied the singer on a variety of occasions over the last week.

The pair reunited after a brief split earlier this month when Madonna reportedly ran out of things to say to her toyboy lover.
