  6. Written by Gerard Ramos October 2009 ON September 21 Celebration, the latest greatest-hits collection of Madonna, hit the shelves of music stores around the world, marking the end of a defining era in pop music that began in 1982, when Warner Bros. Records first introduced the world to Madonna through its Sire Records label with “Everybody,” the first single off her eponymous debut album. In October 2007 she signed a 10-year, $120-million contact with Live Nation, formally ending her long, extremely profitable and occasionally tempestuous relationship with Warner. In fact, in 2004, Madonna and Maverick Records, the label she founded under the terms of her Warner contract, sued Warner and its parent company Time Warner over questionable finances. In response, the company slapped Madonna with its own lawsuit. However stormy the relationship sometimes got, it was nonetheless marked by 12 entries in Billboard’s Hot 100 singles chart, seven in the Billboard 200 album chart, plus an unprecedented 40 entries in the Dance/Club Play chart—and, yes, the title track to her new greatest-hits album is her latest No. 1 entry on the list. Thrown in Madonna’s No. 1 entries in Billboard’s other charts, and the total pulls in at a staggering 146. Not bad for a singer once dissed by Mick Jagger as sounding like “Minnie Mouse on helium,” and dismissed by everybody else as a one-hit wonder destined to quickly fade into obscurity. Needless to say, it didn’t exactly play out that way. Not even close. This new greatest-hits collection by the most successful female music artist of all time doesn’t squeeze in all of those No. 1 entries, but it packs plenty of them along with apparent personal favorites of Her Madgesty. From her ’80s period are “Everybody,” “Holiday,” “Borderline,” “Dress You Up,” “Like a Virgin,” “Material Girl,” “Into the Groove,” “Papa Don’t Preach,” “Live to Tell,” “Like a Prayer,” “Express Yourself” and “Cherish.” Madonna’s ’90s representations include “Justify My Love,” “Vogue,” “Erotica,” “Secret,” “Frozen,” “Take a Bow” and “Beautiful Stranger,” while her work in the new century is covered by, among others, “Music,” “Don’t Tell Me,” “Hollywood,” “Hung Up,” “Sorry,” “4 Minutes,” “Miles Away” and the two brand-new tracks in the package: the throbbing, thoroughly infectious title track and the slammin’ “Revolver,” a collaboration with Lil Wayne. In “Celebration,” Madonna sings: “Put your arms around me/When it gets too hot we can go outside/But for now just come here/Let me whisper in your ear/An invitation to the dance of life.” Which, for the most part, is what has defined our relationship with Her Madgesty: working up a sweat on the dance floor—in joyous abandon, in frenzied frustration, in perfect nihilism. Through our self-possessed, precocious adolescence all the way to our cynicism as adults, there was Madonna constantly in the soundtrack of our lives. We danced because “something in your eyes is makin’ such a fool of me” (“Borderline”). Because we refused to “go for second best baby/Put your love to the test/You know, you know, you’ve got to/Make him express how he feels/And maybe then you’ll know your love is real” (“Express Yourself”). Because “when all else fails and you long to be/Something better than you are today/I know a place where you can get away/It’s called a dance floor, and here’s what it’s for, so...come on, vogue” (“Vogue”). And even when we had exhausted ourselves on the dance floor and retreated to a café in Malate in the wee hours to sober up with the aid of blackest coffee, she made the perfect company as well, pointing out to us the “strangers making the most of the dark/Two by two their bodies become one” (“Crazy for You”). Cautioning us that “a man can tell a thousand lies/I’ve learned my lesson well/Hope I live to tell/The secret I have learned, till then/It will burn inside of me” (“Live to Tell”). Commiserating is our sorrow that “all the world is a stage/And everyone has their part/But how was I to know which way the story’d go/How was I to know you’d break/You’d break my heart” (“Take a Bow”). It has been a “dance of life,” indeed, and our dance card hasn’t been used up. As Celebration’s new tracks suggest—as does her fabulous, motion sickness-inducing video of “Celebration,” complete with über-short Balmain dress and thigh-high Christian Louboutin boots, plus cameos from rumored boyfriend Jesus Luz and daughter Lola, which is included in the companion Celebration: The Video Collection—there is more to get us into the groove from the woman also known as Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone.
  7. You and Lourdes, who is now 12, went to a Lady Gaga show together in New York. Do the two of you go to a lot of shows? We’ve just started. We like the same music. I think Lady Gaga is great. When we saw her, I actually felt like a kind of recognition. I thought, “She’s got something.” There’s something quirky about her. She’s fearless and funny, and when she spoke to the audience, she sounded intelligent and clever. She’s unique. Can you sense an artist’s ambition? Yes. There’s people like Justin Timberlake, who’s really good-looking and laid-back. He’s sort of a Cary Grant. I love him, I love working with him, but I don’t recognize myself in him. But I can see myself in Lady Gaga. In the early part of my career for sure. When I saw her, she didn’t have a lot of money for her production, she’s got holes in her fishnets, and there’s mistakes everywhere. It was kind of a mess, but I can see that she’s got that IT factor. It’s nice to see that at a raw stage - Excerpt from Rolling Stone, November 2009
  8. We have heard more exciting news about a new project by Fabien Baron, the French art director that is currently the editor ofInterview magazine. Baron, who filmed the footage on the set of the SEX book that was used in the Eroticamusic video he directed and who shot the Erotica single cover and various other images of Madonna as Dita on the set of that same video, is putting together a Madonna photo book that will feature for the first time ever many unreleased photos of the Queen of Pop. The book will include unreleased Madonna photos by many different photographers from all the eras in her carrer and is scheduled to be released sometime in 2010. Another great thing to look for next year!
  9. An article on portsmouth.co.uk reports today of a British girl band hoping to hit the big time - with some help of Madonna. Pop trio Essense have recorded their own version of "History", the song written and recorded for Madonna's 2005 album Confessions on a Dance Floor, after their songwriter Rob New sent demos of their work to Warner Brothers. The part the article seems to miss, though, is that "History" is not a "lost track" as they call it, because it was eventually released as a B-side on Madonna's "Jump" single. Anyway, the girls decided to release "History" on their debut album, Easier said than Done, which has now been released for download on the iTunes online music store. Essence member Kate, who used to play Baby Spice in tribute Spice Girls band Hot Spice, said: "It's absolutely amazing. I just hope she has listened to it. It's so great if she has heard it. It's a girl band version of the song, we have made it our own. But you can tell it's a Madonna song. It's just a bit of a hobby. We are just taking things as they come. If it happens, then brilliant." Claire, from Gosport, added: "It was really good fun recording the song. We have such a good time. We see ourselves more as a lady band. We sat down here the first time everything was finished. Last week when it went on sale on iTunes, we had champagne and a take-away to celebrate." Based on an article by portsmouth.co.uk
  10. Madonna is glad the infamous naked photos of her were published early in her career - because the scandal made her determined to succeed. The Material Girl's raunchy reputation skyrocketed when a series of sexy shots - in which she appeared totally naked - surfaced in Playboy and Penthouse magazines in 1985. Industry experts feared the scandal would end the singer's career - but she turned it to her advantage and became one of the most famous stars in the world. And Madonna admits she was so outraged at criticism of the photos, she developed a steely attitude that helped her survive in the music industry. She tells Rolling Stone magazine, "That was the first time I was aware of saying 'F**k you' with my attitude. 'You're trying to put me down because of this?' I (wasn't) going to let public opinion dictate my own feelings about myself. I (wasn't) going to apologise for anything I've done."
  11. With the release of the Celebration album and single and the coming release of the Sticky and Sweet tour on dvd it would seem logic for any artist to take a pause and enjoy the success but that doesn't happen to Madonna, who is working on more releases for her fans to enjoy.First of all there's Revolver, the second new track on her greatest hits album that, as previously reported by MadonnaTribe a while back, will be the second single release off the compilation. The news is that lots of remixers have been contacted to remix the song and among them we find Tracy Young, David Guetta and Paul Van Dyke. And Guetta will not only give his own treatment to the second single, because he's also working on a remix for Celebration together with Akon. But for die hard fans the most exciting news regarding her music is that for Christmas we'll also get brand new house remixes of two of her biggest classics: Holiday and Into The Groove! Meanwhile Madonna will also be busy with another fashion campaign. She will team up again with photographer Steven Klein next month for the new Dolce & Gabbanacampaign, but the cool thing is that this time she will model not for the women's collection but for the men's! We are sure Madonna and Klein will come up with some great ideas for this one! That's it for now and stay tuned to MadonnaTribe.com, the home of Madonna fans that is your number one source for Madonna news!
  12. Madonna's unparalleled Sticky & Sweet Tour is up for two important Billboard 2009 Touring Awards - Top Tour and Top Draw. The 2009 Top Tour Award goes to the top money grossing act, and Madonna is a finalist with two other acts: U2's 360 Tour and AC/DC's Black Ice Tour. The 2009 Top Draw Award goes to the top ticket selling act, and Sticky & Sweet is a finalist with the same two tours: 360 Tour and Black Ice Tour. Billboard will bestow these important music industry awards at a special reception in New York City on Thursday, November 5, 2009. Note that the 2009 Touring Awards are based on global box office numbers reported to Billboard Boxscore from Oct. 1, 2008, through Sept. 30, 2009. These eligibility dates cover the latter part of Madonna's 2008 North American leg of Sticky & Sweet, and cover the full 2009 European leg of Sticky & Sweet. Madonna's position as the only female finalist for these two significant awards further cements her unchallenged status as global superstar.
