What Will Lady Gaga, Ke$ha And Katy Perry Wear To The VMAs?

Experts weigh in on what some of the nominees and performers should wear to the big show on Sunday.

The MTV Video Music Awards have always been known as a breeding ground for out-of-this-world red-carpet fashion. So when everyone from Lady Gaga to Ke$ha to Nicki Minaj steps onto the white carpet of the 2010 VMAs on Sunday night (September 12), the styles are bound to be eye-catching. We can hardly wait for 8 p.m. to start imagining what they'll wear, so MTV News went to the experts for their predictions.

Ke$ha has admitted to wearing road kill on occasion, so she will certainly be willing to take some fashion risks. But Faran Krentcil, digital director at Nylon magazine, hopes the Tik Tok singer doesn't turn risky into trashy.

"Who do I think she should wear to the VMAs? I mean, look, it doesn't matter what I think she should wear, because she's going to wear a trash bag!" she joked. "If she really wants to do that super industrial, 'Mad Max' situation, she should go to Gareth Pugh."

Someone who is guaranteed to up the glamour on the carpet is California Gurl Katy Perry, and Krentcil said she knows which designer would be perfect for the pinup. "I hope she wears Dolce & Gabbana, because she has a great body and beautiful eyes, and Dolce did such wonderful lace," she said. "She's just great, and I like that she still has the touch of fem and flirtiness."

When it came to advising the guys, Krentcil wanted more risks to be taken. She even said that Drake should wear nothing and that Bieber might turn heads if he wore a dress to the show. Eminem might have an easier time complying with her wishes.

"We know [Eminem] looks good in a wife beater, we know he's tough, but I think he can flaunt his success a little bit. ... I would love to see a Ralph Lauren jacket on him," she said. "He would carry off the blazer in a way nobody else could."

Celebrity stylist Derek Roche said he's excited to see what collaborators Beyoncé and Lady Gaga will wear to the big night. "I think Beyoncé gets it right! She always has the Gaga factor, but she doesn't look like a circus. Gaga has the Gaga factor, but is it wearable? I love how fun and creative Gaga is, and I like that she doesn't take herself too seriously. It's not about her going to a debutante ball. She's going to the VMAs."

Celebrity stylist Robert Verdi predicts that Gaga will be in a fashion category all her own on VMA night, particularly after last year's costumes. "I think that when you have to compete with yourself, it's very difficult, and at some point you have to completely evolve and become something other than what people know you to be," he explained. "But this year, with 13 nominations, I think were gonna find Lady Gaga in competition with herself to come up with a whole array of costumes and changes that continue to reinforce this idea that she's a force to be reckoned with."

Glamour editor Susan Cernak had only one style inspiration for Gaga: "I would love to see her pull an 'Emperor's New Clothes' on us and walk the red carpet perhaps fully nude, only carrying a briefcase and say that her outfit was designed by the Haus of Gaga. And that would be amazing."

The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday (September 12). The party starts with MTV News' VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through Sunday.
