Madonna: Say It Ain't So! NO!

Madonna breaks $15m promise to Malawi Shock for villagers forced to move out to make way for girls' school as plan is axed Madonna attending a brick-laying ceremony at the Raising Malawi Girls Academy in Chinkhota in 2010. Photograph: Nick Obank/Barcroft MediaUnder a hot sun, boys herd goats in search of green grass. In a nearby plot a couple weed a crop of maize. The ceremony and fanfare that surrounded the visit of Madonna in 2009 now seems very distant. It was here in the village of Chinkhota in southern Malawi that the pop superstar broke ground for the construction of a prestigious academy for underprivileged girls. Billed as a "gift" to the African country from which she has adopted two children, the $15m (£9.37m) institution was to take in 500 girls and prepare them to be "future women leaders". Now local elders have accused Madonna of letting them down, and the Malawi government has been forced to admit it does not know what her plans are, after she announced that the academy had been scrapped. Madonna stated that she would instead focus on building secondary schools across the country, rather than one school, but officials in Malawi have been left scratching their heads as to what this will entail. "I want to reach thousands, not hundreds of girls," she said in a statement this month. "I want to do more and I want to do it better." The news has come as a bombshell to villagers who surrendered their ancestral land to make way for the school. The Malawian government said it had not been consulted and will now summon the 52-year-old singer to explain herself. "We'd like to know why she has changed," said Peter Mutharika, the education minister. "Yes, we do appreciate that it is her project; she devised it and she knows best how to implement it. But still, as government, we'd be interested to know why there is this change." Mutharika, tipped to be the next president when his brother, Bingu wa Mutharika, ends his final term in 2014, added: "I honestly don't know the number of schools she is going to construct, where she will build and for how long. So until we talk to her, we can't comment much." He said the government will also review the memorandum of understanding it signed with Madonna to "see what it says before we can embrace her new approach". Malawi is one of the world's poorest nations, with more than half of the population of 12 million living on less than one dollar a day. Some 200 people were removed from Chinkhota village, on the outskirts of the capital, Lilongwe, to make way for the Raising Malawi Girls Academy. Most of the villagers were born here and thought the land belonged to their ancestors. They threatened to block the project until Madonna dipped into her pockets to compensate them with $500,000 (£312,800). The Malawian government, which has often defended Madonna's charitable work, helped evict the villagers, claiming it was state land meant for development projects. Chinkhota became a building site – but without a building. Construction of the academy was delayed over a dispute between the Raising Malawi charity and villagers who claimed they were not adequately compensated for land. The building was due to be completed in December this year. However, the earth-moving machines that had been landscaping the area have disappeared. Villagers feel betrayed and accuse Madonna of breaking her promise. Maxwell Matewere, Malawi's leading children's rights activist, said Madonna should not "dump" the project. Matewere, director of Eye of the Child, led two unsuccessful attempts to prevent Madonna adopting two children – David, five, and four-year-old Mercy – from Malawi after their mothers died. He said the pop star was trying to "run away from long-term obligations" and she should go ahead with the academy because "you educate a few to educate others. She must borrow a leaf from others like Oprah [Winfrey] who have done it in South Africa." Madonna is funding several charities in Malawi, including homes for children with Aids. She has built a multi-purpose community centre 30 miles from Lilongwe which looks after more than 8,000 orphans. "In a country where only 33% of Malawian girls attend secondary school, I realise that the plans we had in place for the Raising Malawi Academy for Girls simply would not serve enough children. My original vision is now on a much bigger scale." She said she was in the process of implementing several changes and additions to the management of Raising Malawi in the US and Malawi. Madonna said she had teamed up with Trevor Neilson and his team at Global Philanthropy Group to "shift the strategies so that we can accomplish our goals with more efficiency as we continue to consult our government partners in Malawi". She said Raising Malawi was focused on an approach which includes building schools within communities across the country. A pilot school is on the cards that will "address the barriers keeping girls from secondary education". Neilson said the new community-based approach by Raising Malawi "will provide the opportunity for many more girls to receive a quality education". Madonna's spokeswoman did not comment today but said she would seek further information from the singer's management.   SOURCE: http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2011/jan/21/madonna-breaks-promise-malawi?CMP=twt_fd

BOYCOTT PIERS MORGAN (CNN)

BOYCOTT PIERS MORGAN (CNN)

I mean how much of a dick can you be? Coming on to replace Larry King's talk show that had been on for 25 years with this schmuck? Who the ***CENSORED*** is this creep?

Banning Madonna from the beginning, saying she's "boring" and "old".....and demanding her "get on bended knee in Times Square and apologize to" him! What the hell is this guy? The EGO the size of ***CENSORED*** Texas?

His arrogance and egotistical air about him is a turn off from the beginning. And Who is that Guy? A judge on some stupid talent show? Geeze....I ask all Madonna fans to boycott his show and not even turn it on and watch his snotty face.....bragging that he made Simon Cowell cry...who the ***CENSORED*** cares?

His first guest tonight is Oprah Winfrey---and don't we already know all about her anyway? Is that his major goal in his show to make people cry? Is that such a great thing? I'd rather make people laugh and be lighthearted....but no, he wants to make his guests sad and cry.....that is not something I want to see.

And the other person he banned is Heather Mills McCartney......he said he introduced her to Paul and he said he was sorry about that because it cost Paul $50 Million...so he is saying he is responsible for their getting married too? Did he help consummate their marriage too and deliver their child as well?

He gives himself way too much credit.....and he's so snobby and arrogant.....no reason to watch him at all....

Larry King was getting up there, but Piers Morgan is NO Larry King---at least King was nice to his guests and never went so low to ban people from his show.....even before it even started! Using Madonna's fame to boost his own new talk show? CNN has really gone to a new low, IMHO.....

BOYCOTT PIERS MORGAN ON CNN.....raise our middle fingers to him in solidarity as Madonna fans!!!

Am I Crazy?

I've been waning lately and thinking about renewing my Icon membership! Am I nuts? Have I regressed? Am I a glutton for punishment? Am I asking too many questions? Of all the crap I went through over the years (good and bad), and all the problems associated with a paid membership, why am I contemplating rejoining? I just have lost my mind I think. So far, I've not rejoined --- I'm trying to concentrate on other things! I still think--well part of me does---it's a waste of money. I should take a visit to ebay! Waxing and waning, like the moon above Is it really just Madonna I love? Do I miss the fans who used to be friends?

Or do I see something else instead?

Madonna: Night Club Owner?

BANG Showbiz Date: Friday Jan. 7, 2011 7:46 AM ET Madonna wants to run a London nightclub. The pop superstar met with Malaysian entrepreneur Tony Fernandes to discuss buying a stake in his company, The Aura Group, which owns several nightspots including Aura Mayfair. An associate of the singer told The Daily Telegraph newspaper: "Madonna sees it as a natural move. She has ambitious plans." The 'Material Girl' hitmaker is a regular visitor to the exclusive club - which is owned by Fernandes, events and motorsport entrepreneur Jonny Dodge and Supper Club proprietor Alberto Barbieri - and is believed to be keen to put her own influence into the venue. If Madonna does become a stakeholder in Aura she will be able to count her ex-husband Guy Ritchie as a business rival as he owns The Punchbowl pub in the exclusive area of the city. It seems the 52-year star is keen to expand her business empire. In November, she opened a gym, the Hard Candy Fitness centre, in Mexico City. At the time she said: "It's a sexy name that gives you the opportunity to have fun and to build strength as far as the imagination will allow. "If any of you have seen my shows, you know that I don't skimp on them and the same is true for the gum. We spend what it takes to make a globally first-class gym." She is expected to launch another 10 gyms across the globe, including in Argentina, Russia and Europe. http://www.ctv.ca/CTVNews/Entertainment/20110107/madonna-london-nightclub-110107/

Hey You Lyrics - Discussion

Hey You written by Madonna
Time: 4:16
----------
Hey you
Don't you give up
It's not so bad
There's still a chance for us

Hey you
Just be yourself
Don't be so shy
There's reasons why it's hard

Chorus:

Keep it together
(First time:) You'll make it all right
(Other times:) We'll make it all right
Our celebration is going on tonight
(First two times:) Poets and prophets would envy what we do
(Last time:) Poets and prophets will envy what we do
This could be good
Hey you

Hey you
Open your heart
It's not so strange
You've got to change this time
Hey you
Remember this
None of it's real
Including the way you feel

(chorus)

Save your soul little sister
Save your soul little brother
Hey you
Save yourself
Don't rely on anyone else

Intermediate:

First love yourself
Then you can love someone else
If you can change someone else
Then you have saved someone else
But you must first love yourself
Then you can love someone else
If you can change someone else
Then you have saved someone else
But you must first

Hey you
There on the fence
You've got a choice
One day it will make sense
Hey you
First love yourself
Or if you can't
Try to love someone else

(chorus)
(intermediate)

Triggering Lyrics - Discussion

Triggering (unreleased track)
written by Madonna and Mirwais
Track 16, Time: 3:29
----------
Dance, you're not fighting
Dance, you're not lying
Dance, you're not cheating
Dance, you're only triggering your senses

You're not dying
Dance, you're not crying
Dance, you're not killing yourself
You're only triggering your senses
You're only triggering your senses

Dance is a lovely friend
Dance to your heart's content
Dance and we don't pretend
Dance is your only friend

When you're on the street
To a different beat
When you're feeling down
When there's no one else around

Dance, you're not taking
Dance, you're not hating
Dance, you're not killing yourself
You're only triggering your senses
You're only triggering your senses

(Spoken:)
I like it
A hip, a hip, a hippety hop
And you don't stop
You get on your feet
You do the hip-hop
To a different beat
I know you don't stop
When you're on the street
You're not feeling down
And there's no one else around
You get on your feet
Until you hear the funky beat

When you're on the street
To a different beat
When you're feeling down
When there's no one else around

Crying, lying, dying
Cheating, fighting, hating
Killing, taking, breaking
Fighting, killing, hating

When there's no one else around

Dance, you're not fighting
Dance, you're not lying
Dance, you're not cheating
Dance, you're only triggering your senses

You're not dying
Dance, you're not crying
You're not killing yourself
You're only triggering your senses
You're only triggering your senses
Triggering your senses

Fighting Spirit Lyrics - Discussion

Fighting Spirit (bonus track)
written by Madonna
Track 13, Time: 3:32
-------------------------
What you gonna do when your love is gone
Who you gonna play when the game has ended
Where you gonna go when the bird has flown
How you gonna play when you're all alone

Chorus:

Keep the fighting spirit of love
Keep the fighting spirit of love

What you gonna do when you're on your own
What you gonna have when you got no place to call your own
What you gonna try when your cover's blown
How you gonna fly when your wings are broken

(chorus)

Keep the fighting spirit of love

Don't let it get you down
Keep the fighting spirit and turn your head around
Don't let it take you in
Keep the fighting spirit and you'll begin again

Like It Or Not Lyrics - Discussion

Like It Or Not written by Madonna, Christian Karlsson, Pontus Winnberg, and Henrik Jonback
Track 12, Time: 4:32
-------------------------
You can call me a sinner
Or you can call me a saint
Celebrate me for who I am
Dislike me for what I ain't
Put me up on a pedestal
Or drag me down in the dirt
Sticks and stones will break my bones
But your names will never hurt

I'll be the garden, you'll be the snake
All of my fruit is yours to take
Better the devil that you know
Your love for me will grow
Because

Chorus:

This is who I am
You can like it or not
You can love me or leave me
'Cause I'm never gonna stop
No no
You know (all except first time)

Cleopatra had her way
Matahari too
Whether they were good or bad
Is strictly up to you

Life is a paradox
And it doesn't make much sense
Can't have the "femme" without the "fatale"
Please don't take offense

Don't let the fruit rot under the vine
Fill up your cup and let's drink the wine
Better the devil that you know
Your love for me will grow
Because

(chorus, repeat)

No no, you know
(repeat 3 times)

I'll be the garden, you'll be the snake
All of my fruit is yours to take
Better the devil that you know
Your love for me will grow
Because

(chorus, repeat)

No no, you know
(repeat 3 times)

How High Lyrics - Discussion

How High written by Madonna, Christian Karlsson, Pontus Winnberg, and Henrik Jonback
Track 9, Time: 4:40
-------------------------
How high are the stakes
How much fortune can you make
How high are the stakes
How much fortune can you make

It's funny, I spent my whole life wanting to be talked about
I did it, just about everything to see my name in lights

Was it all worth it
And how did I earn it
Nobody's perfect
I guess I deserved it

Chorus:

How high are the stakes
How much fortune can you make
Does this get any better
Should I carry on
Will it matter when I'm gone
Will any of this matter

It's funny how everybody mentions my name but they're never very nice
I took it, just about everything except my own advice

Was it all worth it
And how did I earn it
Nobody's perfect
I guess I deserved it

Chorus2:

How high are the stakes
How much fortune can you make
[Nothing lasts forever]
Does this get any better
Should I carry on
Will it matter when I'm gone
[Does it make a difference]
Will any of this matter

How high, does it make a difference
Nothing lasts forever
Should I, will it matter when I'm gone
Will any of this matter

How high are the stakes
How much fortune can you make
Should I carry on
Will it matter when I'm gone

(chorus)

How high are the stakes [How high]
Does it make a difference
Nothing lasts forever
Does this get any better
Should I carry on [should I]
Will it matter when I'm gone
Does it make a difference
Will any of this matter

How high are the stakes
How much fortune can you make
Should I carry on
Will it matter when I'm gone

You've got style, that's what all the girls say
Satin sheets and luxuries so fine
All your suits are custom made in London
But I've got something that you'll really like

Chorus:

Gonna dress you up in my love
All over, all over
Gonna dress you up in my love
All over your body

Feel the silky touch of my caresses
They will keep you looking so brand new
Let me cover you with velvet kisses
I'll create a look that's made for you

It's So Cool Lyrics - Discussion

It's So Cool written by Madonna, Mirwais, Monte Pittman
Bonus Track, Time: 3:27
-------------------------
It's so hard to be someone
It's so hard to be unknown
In your heart you ought to blame
In your heart you played the game
Do you realize you paid the price
Do you know the cost of all your vice
Save your soul, it's all a test
Save your soul, it's for the best

Chorus:

We need love [love, love, love, love]
We need love [love, love, love, love]
We need love [love, love, love, love]
We need love [love, love, love, love]

Save your soul little sister
Save your soul dear little brother
You need hope says the preacher
Learn to cope says all my teachers
Do you really know God's intention
Do you ever ask what it's all for
We need love, love and love
We need more, more and more

(chorus, repeat)

Prophets are telling us
We're near the end
But I am telling you
That it's all pretend

It's so cool to be uncool
It's so right to be unright
It's so good to look so bad
Isn't this the best thing you ever had
(repeat)

(chorus, repeat)

We need love

Celebration Lyrics - Discussion

Celebration written by Madonna, Paul Oakenfold, Ian Green, Ciaran Gribbin
Disc 2, Track 18, Time: 3:35
-------------------------
I think you wanna come over
Yeah I heard it through the grapevine
Are you drunk? Are you sober?
Think about it, does it matter
And if it makes you feel good then I say do it
I don't know what you're waiting for

Feel my temperature rising
It's too much heat, I'm gonna lose control
Do you want to go higher
Get closer to the fire
I don't know what you're waiting for

Chorus:

Come join our party, yeah
'Cause anybody just won't do
Let's get this started, yeah
'Cause everybody wants to party with you

Boy you got a reputation
But you're gonna have to prove it
I see a little hesitation
Am I gonna have to show you
That if it feels right, get on your mark
Step to the beat boy, that's what it's for

Put your arms around me
When it gets too hot, we can go outside
But for now just come here
Let me whisper in your ear
An invitation to the dance of life

Chorus2:

Come join our party, it's a celebration
'Cause anybody just won't do
Let's get this started, no more hesitation
'Cause everybody wants to party with you

(Spoken:)
Haven't I seen you somewhere before?
You look familiar
You wanna dance?
Yeah
I guess I just don't recognize you with your clothes on
What are you waiting for

(chorus2, repeat)

Boy you've got it, it's a celebration
Anybody just won't do
Let's get it started, no more hesitation
'Cause everybody wants to party with you

Boy you've got it
'Cause anybody just won't do
Let's get it started, no more hesitation
'Cause everybody wants to party with you

Crazy For You Lyrics - Discussion

Crazy For You written by John Bettis and Jon Lind
Track 10, Time: 4:10
-------------------------
Swaying room as the music starts
Strangers making the most of the dark
Two by two their bodies become one

I see you through the smokey air
Can't you feel the weight of my stare
You're so close but still a world away
What I'm dying to say, is that

Chorus:

I'm crazy for you
Touch me once and you'll know it's true
I never wanted anyone like this
It's all brand new, you'll feel it in my kiss
I'm crazy for you, crazy for you

Trying hard to control my heart
I walk over to where you are
Eye to eye we need no words at all

Slowly now we begin to move
Every breath I'm deeper into you
Soon we two are standing still in time
If you read my mind, you'll see

(chorus)

It's all brand new, I'm crazy for you
And you know it's true
I'm crazy, crazy for you

MADONNA PLAYS SANTA IN MALAWI

MADONNA PLAYS SANTA IN MALAWI Tuesday December 28, 2010 MADONNA has been giving Santa Clause a run for his money. The pop superstar reportedly sent gifts to Malawi orphans over the holidays. Madge shipped several boxes and bales containing toys, clothing and sweets to six orphanages to the country. “To my Malawi children on Christmas and Boxing Day. I wish I was with you. See you soon, M,” read a handwritten note that the diva included with the packages. Malawi is the birthplace of Madonna’s adopted children David and Mercy, . Madonna’s kids — including 14-year-old Lourdes and 10-year-old Rocco — also signed Christmas cards for the orphans that read, “Mercy, David, Rocco, Lourdes and I send you a blessed Christmas to all of you!” The gifts were distributed by Raising Malawi, a charity sponsored by Madonna. The diva also held a holiday party at a Malawi orphanage near the town of Lilongwe, where she has taught Kabbalah classes. More than 1,000 people were invited to celebrate with the orphans, according to Us Weekly magazine. Recent reports claimed Madonna’s father, Silvio ‘Tony’ Ciccone, has given her a ticking off about her penchant for younger men. “After she split up with Jesus Luz, who’s 24, Tony was hoping Madonna had got this younger man thing out of her system,” a source said. “But then she started dating Brahim Zaibat, who’s also in his twenties, almost straight away. “Madonna’s just out for a good time right now, but her dad thinks she should be taking things more seriously.” Tony’s been concerned about his daughter ever since she split from husband Guy Ritchie in 2008, the insider revealed. “He really liked Guy and was devastated when their marriage fell apart,” said the source. “He’s always been very strict with his children and continues to be very involved in their lives. “You wouldn’t think she was 52 because the conversation was more like a father would have with a teenager. “But Madonna’s having the time of her life and she thinks her daddy needs to mind his own business.”

White Christmas 4 U?

Are any of you expecting a White Christmas this year? They're predicting snow where I live, but not sure yet. I hear Europe is getting kicked badly this year with so much snow. A Lady Gaga show in Bercy, which was cancelled before because of the strike in Paris, now the show the other day was cancelled because her trucks were stuck because of the snow. She performed the next day I think.....she even tweeted she was stuck on her bus.   As for Madonna? I hear she's spending it in London with Guy....but I also heard she also was affected by the bad weather and got off a Virgin/Atlantic flight earlier than the other, regular people on there.... I hope she had a good Christmas with her family.   I wish all Iconers and Madonna fans all over the world PEACE AND JOY throughout the Holiday Season and throughout the New Year 2011.... Love and hope, Kel

Stalker Gets Backstage At Gaga Show

Lady Gaga stalker gets backstage at London show .slideImage { } Lady Gaga performs to a sell out crowd at the Odyssey Area in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Saturday, Oct. 30, 2010. (AP / Peter Morrison) Date: Wednesday Dec. 22, 2010 9:02 AM ET Lady Gaga was left "shaken" after a stalker got backstage at one of her shows. The 'Bad Romance' singer's team were forced to call police after a woman forced her way into the holding area of London's The 02 during her concert last Thursday and was found heading straight for the pop star's dressing room. An insider said: "Gaga was understandably shaken by the incident but was a consummate professional and continued as per normal, putting on a dazzling show." The obsessed fan - who was already known as a nuisance to the 24-year-old star's team - had gone to "great lengths" to get to Gaga and was found carrying forged backstage passes and laminates which helped her evade security measures. A security source told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "This was a serious breach of security and the woman was heading in the direction of the stage and, more worryingly, Gaga's dressing room. "This woman has gone to great lengths to produce all the fake documentation so she could move at ease in the holding area backstage." The fan was detained by two members of security until police arrived to quiz her on site before letting her go. The incident is not the only time security was breached during the 'Alejandro' hitmaker's current tour. On Monday a fan reportedly grabbed her breast outside her hotel in Paris.

But it’s only the start of what are likely to be difficult, even tortured, months or even years, as the military struggles to adapt to the new law. One of Defense Secretary Robert Gates’s arguments in favor of congressional repeal was that he foresaw a judgment by courts overturning the law. A legal judgment would require instant compliance, he warned, whereas a Congressional repeal would, he hoped, allow time for the military to adapt. The legislation shepherded to victory by the cross-party alliance of Senators Joe Lieberman and Susan Collins gives Gates the time he wanted. Adjustment is unlikely to be easy or swift, though. The most immediate question concerns the future of the Marine Corps commandant, Gen. James Amos. Alone among the service chiefs, Amos has spoken out repeatedly and passionately against a repeal of DADT. The review that Gates cannily put in hand included opinions about gays among the serving military, which found that some 70 percent thought repeal would have little or no effect. But the Marines’ combat units were warier: 58 percent thought gays openly serving in their units would adversely affect cohesion. “I have to listen to that.” Amos said at the Pentagon appearance 10 days ago.  Amos is haunted by a vision: “I don’t want to lose any Marines to distraction. I don’t want to have any Marine that I’m visiting at Bethesda [naval hospital] with no legs be the result of any distraction.” Amos’s vision may be overwrought. He may, understandably, be influenced by his own views as a committed Christian. As the first aviator to become commandant—he took over only in October—he may also feel he has to demonstrate solidarity with the kids on the front lines. He is also subject to peer pressures other service chiefs are spared. The Marines are different from the other services: once a Marine, always a Marine; it’s a brotherhood for life. Amos is doing no more than his job if he listens to the views of long-retired members of that brotherhood. Nevertheless, Congress has finally acted. What does Amos do now? It’s common ground that preparing the military for this challenge is going to require, above all, leadership in each service, starting at the top. Will Amos decide he cannot, in all conscience, lead the Marines into this new world? (Marine Corps officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Amos on Sunday.)   At one level, the debate has been absurd. Gays have always served in the military. It’s a safe bet that every large military base in America has on its outskirts at least one bar where gays from the base quietly gather. Two-thirds of the serving military questioned in the Pentagon survey believed they had served alongside gays. A handful, at least, of Medal of Honor recipients reputedly have been gay. Some very senior officers are gay. One of the most brilliant Army four-stars of the last generation was gay, and so lonely that his command sergeant major would quietly warn young newcomers to his staff to avoid after-hours invitations. When the four-star died, he was lauded as a great warrior.   A few serving units have been composed almost wholly of gays. Any reporter who has covered the military for any length of time has heard the stories. One of the most celebrated maintenance teams in the Air Force was for years almost exclusively lesbian—and proud of it. That posed delicate problems for personnel officers sending newcomers into the unit. But it never occurred to the Air Force to expel the group. They were simply too good and too valuable.   Pat Wellenbach / APPHOTOS: Gay issues remain front and center in the United States, and around the world. Click to view photo gallery. A Changing Tide Every service has similar anecdotal examples. One of the most effective Special Operations Forces teams is reputed within the SOF fraternity to be largely gay. Aboard one U.S. aircraft carrier, a team with one of the most demanding jobs—one on which the lives of the carrier’s pilots depend—is widely known on the carrier to be gay.  Those could be dismissed as, paradoxically, unisex units. The issue, critics of repeal have argued, is how a team composed of straights and gays would perform. This is a legitimate concern too easily dismissed by civilian advocates of reform. On the evidence, though, the concern is overstated. Of those who believed they had served with gays, 92 percent told the Pentagon survey that their presence had not affected the unit.     There is an old military saying: “There are no atheists in a foxhole.” It has a parallel here: what matters in combat is whether the man beside you can be trusted to do his job, not whether —in less fraught circumstances—he might fancy you. (The issue of gays is distinct, therefore, from the almost-as-contentious issue of women in front-line combat roles. In that debate, practical concerns about upper-body strength—can you carry a wounded comrade to safety—do have force. Women do bravely serve, and die, in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. But front-line combat squads may be a task too far.)   Much of the fear of gays is likely based on ignorance. Few of the kids—teenage and early20s—who fill the Marines’ combat units will have known avowed gays.  (Football-obsessed high schools in America’s heartland tend to be unwelcoming to declared gays.)  The upshot, as the Pentagon survey tactfully observed, is “a misperception that a gay man does not “fit” the image of a good war fighter.” Many in the military, more bluntly, have a stereotype of gays as mincing, epicene “others” —a cartoon image which, the Pentagon survey shows, overwhelmingly evaporates on personal acquaintance. The Good, Bad and Ugly

December 18, 2010, 2 pm DADT Repeal and DREAM Defeat: A Failure of Evangelical Influence? Post by Sarah Posner This afternoon the Senate failed to break a Republican filibuster of the DREAM Act, and voted, finally, to repeal the military's Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy on gays and lesbians in the military. Viewing today as a microcosm of religious political activism, these two votes caused me to wonder: do elected officials give a damn what religious activists have to say? Let's take DREAM first: there was a pretty wide coalition of religious activists who supported DREAM and brought their message to the Hill. The activists included long-time proponents of immigration reform, including Protestant denominations and Jewish groups, as well as some relative newcomers to the immigration reform fight. Conservative evangelicals came out for DREAM, and even for comprehensive immigration reform (if it doesn't include equal justice for gays and lesbians). The coalition group Conservatives for Comprehensive Immigration Reform included representatives of the National Association of Evangelicals and some religious right organizations. You know, the ones with all the pull because they represent such a crucial slice of the Republican vote. But even that couldn't move opponents of justice for undocumented children. Sure, a lot of religious right groups, like Concerned Women for America and Eagle Forum, oppose the DREAM Act. There's a split in the religious right over immigration policy (let's call it a divide between the "broader agenda" evangelicals and the Americanists with their feet still locked in the 1950s). But why, given that the pro-immigration reform camp was in agreement with mainline Protestants, Jews, social justice Catholics and other liberal religious constituencies that have been in the trenches on this issue far longer, could they not push the Senate on that arc of justice? On Don't Ask, Don't Tell, conservative religious opposition seemed not to matter, either. The final vote against this backward -- shall I say it? -- abomination was decisive: 65-31, with eight Republicans voting with the Democrats for repeal. That's a pretty amazing rebuke to the religious right, and all its bogus fear-mongering and primary threats. What mattered more was the support for repeal from the military brass. Some might view this as a victory against the homo-hating religious right, and it is. Although it was their influence that made this battle so protracted, in the end, their position was decisively rejected. As I was writing this, though, I received a press release from Liberty Counsel -- whose president, Mat Staver, was one of the conservative evangelicals who supported the DREAM Act -- on behalf of the Freedom Federation, a coalition of religious right groups that claims to be reaching out beyond the religious right's historically white base. The first words on the subject line were, "Freedom Federation Pledges Full Mobilization on Behalf of . . ." and I thought, ah, they're getting up in arms about the failure of the DREAM Act. But, sadly, no, it's a promise to mobilize a claimed 40 million supporters "to overturn DADT repeal."

Easy Ride Lyrics - Discussion

Easy Ride written by Madonna and Monte Pittman Track 11, Time: 5:04 ------------------------- I want the good life But I don't want an easy ride What I want is to work for it Feel the blood and sweat on my fingertips That's what I want for me   I want to know everything Maybe someday I will What I want is to find my place Breathe the air and feel the sun on my children's face That's what I want   Chorus:   I go round and round just like a circle I can see a clearer picture When I touch the ground I come full circle To my place and I am home I am home   I want to let go of all disappointment that's waiting for me What I want is to live forever Not defined by time and space It's a lonely place That's what I want   (chorus, repeat)   I go round and round just Round and round just
